Children, Adolescents, and the Internet: A New Field of Inquiry in
Developmental Psychology

With this special section on children, adolescents, and the Internet, we survey the state of a new field of enquiry in developmental psychology. This field is important because developmentalists need to understand how children and adolescents live in a new, massive, and complex virtual universe, even as they carry on their lives in the real world. We have selected six empirical articles to showcase various aspects of child and adolescent development in this virtual universe. These articles reflect three major themes of this new field:

the Internet. Encompassing the broad areas of cognitive and social development, these articles address a number of different specific developmental functions. Yan analyzes the factors influencing the development of an understanding of the Internet in both its technical and social dimensions. Jackson et al. demonstrate the positive impact of home Internet access on the reading achievement of low-income, mostly African American children. In the arena of social development, articles deal with five important foci of adolescent development: identity (Subrahmanyam et al.); self-worth
(Whitlock et al.); sexuality (Subrahmanyam et al.; Borzekowski et al.); health behaviors (Borzekowski et al.; Whitlock et al.); and leadership (Cassell et al.).
The selection of articles reflects a second editorial goal: to sample both the positive and negative aspects of the virtual world in which children and adolescents are increasingly living. For example, from Whitlock and…...

...Social-networking sites have taken the world by a storm leading to nothing less than a revolution. A lot of concerns have been voiced about social networking sites taking over in our lives. However, one major issue that has been overlooked is the changing mind-set of the youth due to the social networking sites. The adolescence years shape our outlook, our personality and mould us into what we are. So when we grow up in a world where our popularity is directly proportional to the number of “likes” and the “haaawt” comments we get on our photoshop-enhanced profile picture and live with people constantly competing for the coveted title of the king/queen of the virtual world, it is bound to have a profound impact of the psyche of an entire generation. The focus and time we spend on creating our brand on these social networking sites is a standing testimony to the awakening of the narcissist in us. At any hangout or get-together more time is spent on clicking snaps and updating the virtual world on what’s going on, rather than enjoying the event. The photos are uploaded within an hour, and then begins the flood of “Likes” and comments. The social networking sites and the culture they have created is thus a breeding ground for a vain, self-obsessed younger generation. We forget that we chose the people we want to interact with on these sites. First of all, Israel has a very good educational structure and system. Education is free and compulsory from 1st to 12th grade. There is no private school in Israel because almost all of the school is supported by the state. It is very interesting to note that there is no student who repeats a term because of difficulty coping with lessons. ...Youth workers’ work is very diverse because it depends on the settings, the population and the ages. However, the goals are the same which they are for the benefits of youths. Youth work should have an impact on young people’s lives via processes of developments, enjoyments, taking parts voluntary, with relevant learnings based on young people’s expressed needs and interests. The work with young people is very challenging because they are apprentice adults, on the verge of a new life and the workers are the trainer teaching them the skills needed to become qualified adults or fully functioning. For me, I work with immigrant youth and their families. The major goal is to help them adjust to America’s life. The paths to the goals are so difficult for us and for them because they didn’t come to this country by choice but they were obligated by their families whom are escaping from wars. By transitioning from country to another, this generation has faced many pressures, has experience discomforting confusion, disquieting irritations and perplexities. We find the adjustment to be difficult socially and economically. They have to be engaged into a new world including new friends, new neighbors, new schools, new languages and new environments. ...Age and youth representation in the McDonald’s advert Parallel Lives In the McDonald’s advert parallel lives age and youth are represented in both stereotypical and different ways. The aim of the advert is to show that even though people appear to have completely different lives everyone has something in common E.g. McDonalds. When the audience are first introduced to the “youth”, loud RnB music as diegetic sound and then becomes diegetic sound when close up of the youths shown. The youths are also hanging around with a group of friends, commonly known as a gang. The gang is out on the streets. This is implying that it is common for teenagers to hang around on the streets, playing music and disturbing others. They are wearing dark colours for example black, maroon, dark brown and dark blue while also wearing hoodies. Their trousers are hanging low, resulting in their pants being on display. From using these conventions, McDonalds are giving a stereotypical representation of teenagers-loud, a disturbance and also not being able to dress properly. Whereas the older man is on his own. This is implying that it is common for the older generation to be on their own, perhaps being lonely. He wears neutral colours like creams, beige, and brown, grey and tan. He is wearing his trousers up to his waist and also wearing braces to help keep them up. In addition to this, he is wearing his jacket over his coat. It’s this dependence that drives me to proclaim that technology is a detriment to the social development of youth. How did we get here? Positive Development Computers have been in existence since 1936 but it wasn’t until 1991, when Tim Berners Less came up with the World Wide Web, starting the computer revolution and computers as we know it. There is a plethora of information on the internet regarding the positive aspects of technology; it would be close minded to think that the sharing of knowledge by all of humanity is anything but positive. Dr Bers, a professor at the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development, conducted a study that demonstrates how computers, if used as instrumental machines, can “lead youth to use technology to learn new things, express themselves in creative ways, communicate and take care of themselves and others, and contribute to society while developing their own sense of identity grounded on personal and moral values (Bers, Winter 2010).” Can I hear an “Amen?” This is exactly what every parent wants for their child. ...The development of the self: Implications for organized youth sport programs George Herbert Mead was a noted social psychologist who taught at the University of Chicago in the 1930s. He is famous for his theory of the self in which he used the game of baseball to illustrate the complexity of the relationship between the individual and the social environment. In his theory he explained that the social and conceptual abilities required to fully comprehend relationships between different positions in a complex game were similar to the abilities required in the role taking processes that underlie all social relationships and, ultimately, serve as the basis for all social order in society. My own interests in social psychology and the self has led me to use Mead’s theory to (1) understand the process through which sport participation affects the behavior and development of young people, and (2) describe and set the limits of what can be expected from the children in organized youth sport programs.
