Boys Will Be Boys

...People often say, “boys will be boys,” or “boys don’t cry.” What do these phrases really mean? Are boys really pre-determined to be aggressive and emotionless? Co-authors of Raising Cain, Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson, would argue that this is not the case. As psychologists specializing in helping young males, Kindlon and Thompson bring to light the notion that boys are just as emotional as their female counterparts. They show how a boy without a good understanding of his emotions will likely face many difficulties in his upbringing. Reflecting on my own adolescence experiences, I feel like I am able to validate the claims of Kindlon and Thompson. The main argument expressed in the passage is that “boys need an emotional vocabulary. They need to experience empathy at home and school…they need modeling of a rich emotional life.” (7) Without this, they argue that boys are destined to struggle throughout their childhood and adolescence. “They are forced to manage conflict, adversity, and change in his life with a limited emotional repertoire.” (4) I never realized it at the time, but looking back, I can tell that my parents always fostered the growth of my emotional vocabulary. If I had a problem at school, my parents encouraged me to talk to them about it. If I was in an argument with my brother, we were separated and asked to talk over how we felt. Never did my parents try to shy me away from showing and understanding my emotions. As a result, I never had any of the......

...You always see children running around in flocs and asking for money/food & sometimes even autographs(slumdog millionaire). The autograph's could easily be sold for money or collected on. It does happen from time to time though that people (Also a lot of tourists) find compassion in these children, as in the text “chokra” that the quotation is from. It does not seem like the children cares about the compassion they get, more than the money they it gets them. In the movie “a slumdog millionaire” jamal and his brother and the girl arrive at the “orphanarium” where some more grown-up men take care of them, in exchange for begging on the streets. They use the same method as the one that was used on Munmun in “chokra”. The best example is the boy on the orphanarium: They poured acid into his eye's to blind him in the hope that it would help increase the ammount of money he got from begging, the same way as they crippled munmun in the hope of the same. ...

The Boy

...Examine the ways in which two boys are presented in ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ There are two boys in the story called Bruno and Shmuel they are both 8 years old and were both born on the 15 April 1934. The story is called ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ Bruno is the son of the Commandant and he is a very intelligent young boy with a very strong imagination. This can be seen by his curiosity to investigate the ‘farm’ Shmuel is Jewish; he has been put in Auschwitz. Bruno has a unique name and Shmuels is common. “I’ve never met anyone named Bruno……I think I might be the only one’ “there are dozens of Shmuels”….. (p109) all though to Bruno it is a very unusual name lots of Jews and polish people in the camp. It can be seen how the two boys, although very different from one another, they have hidden similarities. Firstly, they have both been forced to leave the family homes. They both don’t like it there but the two young boys think the other is living a better life. Bruno invites Shmuel to dinner not realising he’s in prisoned ‘you’re on the wrong side of the fence though’ said Shmuel. Although living very different lives the two boys develop an unexpected friendship “you’re my best friend shmuel….my best friend for life” (page) Bruno is at one side of the fence and shmuel is at the other. Why is that? Because germens don’t like Jews....

...disagree or give advice in a way that may be less offensive. Studying actual proverb use in conversation, however, is difficult since the researcher must wait for proverbs to happen.[23] An Ethiopian researcher, Tadesse Jaleta Jirata, made headway in such research by attending and taking notes at events where he knew proverbs were expected to be part of the conversations.[24] Use in literature[edit] [pic] [pic] Created proverb from J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings on a bumper sticker. Many authors have used proverbs in their writings. Probably the most famous user of proverbs in novels is J. R. R. Tolkien in his The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series.[25][26] Also, C. S. Lewis created a dozen proverbs in The Horse and His Boy.[27] These books are notable for not only using proverbs as integral to the development of the characters and the story line, but also for creating proverbs. Among medieval literary texts, Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde plays a special role because Chaucer's usage seems to challenge the truth value of proverbs by exposing their epistemological unreliability.[28] Proverbs have been the inspiration for titles of books: The Bigger they Come by Erle Stanley Gardner and Birds of a Feather (several books with this title). Some stories have been written with a proverb overtly as an opening, such as "A stitch in time saves nine" at the beginning of "Kitty's Class Day", one of Louisa May Alcott's Proverb Stories. Other times, a......

...1933. There he studied law but in his heart he always wanted to coach football. His first coaching job was at ST. Cecilla High School in 1939, where he coached basketball, football, and baseball; he had championship seasons with all of them. He later left there and became an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He told all of his teams: “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” (Norwood). This means, if you do not win, no one will remember who you are. He taught his players that winning is the only thing and losing is not an option. Tom Landry had a different past, but he also always wanted to coach all of his life. He always dreamed of becoming a Dallas Cowboy’s football player, ever since he was a boy. When Landry played football in high school, he learned everything about the game of football and became a great quarterback. In his first season of high school they were district champs. Yeah Boy

...Horse Barn Working on the horse farm has to be the most memorable part of my life. Surrounded by fresh air, wide-open space, and peaceful, natural sounds, I cherished every minute spent with the horses. The hot, humid summers were always the laziest parts of life on the farm. Rising early in the damp morning, I tried to get outside and start my daily chores before the inevitable heat struck the air. Breathing the crisp, morning air, winding through the maze of wagging tails and drooling mouths toward the sliding barn door, passed through a sense of importance in my life. At the gates, anxious to get their breakfast after a long, cool night in the fields, the impatient horses pawed and neighed, telling me to hurry my step. The beautiful, bay quarter horse, Impressive, was always at the head of the pack. King of the group, he was also the trusty, old horse that I knew and loved. Unlatching the gate, I allow Impressive to walk through on his own accord and trot off to his stall, awaiting the grain and hay he knows will soon come. The rest of the pack is brought in one by one and placed safely into their spacious, clean and, for the meantime, cool stalls. Perfect, Taffy, Special, Max, Arbitrator, Melvin, Rupert, and more, all having their own turn, all knowing their place in the well-established pecking order. Feeding time is always filled with commotion and seemingly unending, impatient screams. The average outsider would have guessed that the fat, robust horses hadn't......

You Decide: Boys Will Be Boys

...You Decide – Boys will be boys Meagan Rodas Chamberlain College of Nursing Course Number: Socs185 May 2015 You Decide – Boys will be boys Boys will be boys, but do we have to accept that? All throughout life there are double standards. This, boys will be boys, is one that is controversial to most women. Because boys have high testosterone levels and are more sex driven than that of a female, does that mean we have to excuse their behavior or that they are deemed “excused” because they are boys? It has been seen that “boys and men are rewarded and praised for heterosexual sexual contacts, whereas girls and women are derogated and stigmatized for similar behaviors” (Kreager, D. A., & Staff, J. (2009). THE SEXUAL DOUBLE STANDARD AND ADOLESCENT PEER ACCEPTANCE). How sexual behavior is handled in the workplace. Sexual behavior and sexual harassment have long been a problem in the work place. However, most of the time we see men sexually harassing women. It’s very rare that we hear about women harassing men. But, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Men who sexually harass women in the work place are often suspended without pay, fired, and in some cases taken to court. When men make these unwanted comments or advances towards women, they are considered disgusting, pigs, disrespectful, etc. When women are in the wrong it is overlooked and possibly laughed off. This double standard is unethical and should not be happening. Most large corporations use formal......

The Fat Boy

...The Fat Boy By: Owen Marshall ‘The Fat Boy’ is a short story by Owen Marshall about an anonymous, nameless boy who mysteriously appears in a small town in New Zealand and was hated by the townspeople. In the text, I noticed how the author used various symbolisms and themes that are seen in real life. There are three symbolisms in ‘the Fat boy’ that caught my attention. These are religious figures, conscience, and outsider. There were various points in the story where the author made used of a religious figure. The fat boy, for instance, has been described as monk-like. The fat boy is also like a shepherd tending his flock. “The fat boy stood before the railings and held one of the iron bars like a staff”. The fat boy, being a symbol of the Shepherd, looks after and protects the innocent, “The children smiled at him as he watched, and were content at his presence…”. At the end of the story, the fat boy ‘dies’ and his body mysteriously disappeared. I thought of how the fat boy’s fate resembles Jesus Christ who was also blamed for things he didn’t commit, was ridiculed and accused by the public and whose body also disappeared when he died. The fat boy seems to act as the townspeople’s conscience which is why he appears at or before each crime is committed "the fat boy had the knack of being where he was least desired". I think this is maybe one of the reasons why he is described by the town people as having such unattractive figure “A very fat, ugly boy, the music......

Boys vs. Girls

...Angeli De Leon, and Jozelle Gonida. Angela: From boys, we also have Steven Evangelio, Ricky Park, and Mel Lloren. Angela: Ok, to start the face off. Let me know who do you think among you is smarter? This has been a worldwide controversy notion since the beginning of creation. Let’s start with the girls.. Juicy: For me, we girls are way smarter because we are deep thinkers and imaginative. We are much better than boys mentally speaking. We think before we act and we remain calm in crisis. Angeli: Yes yes and Boys on the other hand tend to reason things out and find practical solutions to problems. They don’t waste time and they like to hit the subject right away. That’s why boys don’t like to chat for hours on the phone without a goal. Mel: Yeah.. That’s because we are goal-oriented, this means that we tend to reason. Our nature forced us to be reasoning creatures. A conversation should have a purpose that is worth considering. We Men do not indulge in a useless chat over the phone for several hours for no aim. Steven: Yes I believe in that, and in the outside world boys are more intelligent than girls. It is a fact that man’s brain is bigger and heavier than women’s. Nicole: No, because from what I have remembered one observation proved that females achieve better results than males in school because females are more focused and stable. Moreover, females reach brain and psychological maturity faster before boys because research proved that there is a small......
