My Analysis of Dead Poet’s Society

Better late than never. I blame myself for never watching it before an educational psych class senior year of college. This was a truly inspiring movie!
There was a clear clash between the traditional and conservative values espoused by Welton Academy as an institution, and the progressive teaching methods of John Keating. Welton Academy’s ethos of “tradition, honor, discipline, and excellence not only discourages but makes it a crime for a student to exercise a critical political consciousness. Professor John Keating, on the other hand, is concerned with the political and moral quality of his students. He challenges them to question the social and political norms that defines their lives at Welton. As a result, he inspires Charlie to publish an article in the school newspaper, arguing for why Welton should be coeducational. In the end, Headmaster Gale Nolan, was so unwilling to even consider the possibility that Neil Perry’s suicide was a product of the intellectually and political repressive atmosphere at Welton, that he compelled every member of the Dead Poet’s Society on threat of expulsion to sign a form stating that Keating’s “destructive” teaching method was the true culprit. By the end of the film, it was clear that what transpires at Welton Academy is not true learning, but rather an insidious form of social and political control in which the dynamics of the dominant, established society, as exemplified by Neil’s father’s suppression of his son’s desire to pursue acting, reproduce themselves in the classroom. In this type of society, children are treated as mere objects or tabulae rasae, without feelings, without desires, without willpower, without dignity, without knowledge. ...British Lit / Test Two Review Essay Questions 1. The genre of “The Fairie Queen” is a romantic epic. Epic poetry is the highest form of poetry; long and episodic. It is a narrative that contains many adventures, a central character, journey to hell, gods and goddesses, and it starts in the middle (in medias res). The Fairie Queen is allegorical of the Protestant Reformation. It contains many biblical allusions supporting the Protestant faith and criticizing Catholicism. It is written in Spenserian stanza, stanzas of nine iambic lines; the first eight are pentameters and the ninth is hexameter with the rhyme scheme ababbcbcc. 2. The term Renaissance translates into “rebirth”. This was a great revival of art, literature, and learning in Europe; marking the transition from the medieval to the modern world. The Renaissance began in Europe around 1390; this was around the same time of the Canterbury Tales. The Renaissance did not begin in England until1485. It was so late coming to England because of the civil war due to the “power struggle” between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. This Civil War was called the War of the Roses. ...Ruth Schambeau 7/8/13 When one thinks of a love song, they think of the narrator gushing about their object of affection, their one true love. The narrator is supposed to go on and on about how in love they are and how all they think about is that one and only person. Some love songs are sad and the narrator ends up heartbroken and alone and other times they have a “happily ever after” ending similar to those in fairytales. Most of the time, love songs live up to their name and are about purely about love. In T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” some of these expectations are anticipated to make their way in to the poem in some way or another, yet that is not the case; it is more the lament of a self-conscious man who lives with fear and uncertainty about himself and women. Whilst it may seem Prufrock is incapable of making an emotional connection with any female; it would seem a woman aggressive enough to get him out of his shell, yet gentle enough to deal with his sensitivity and fear would make the perfect match for him. We cannot imagine that any woman would listen to any love song by Prufrock, any more than they would find his name or his person attractive. A man named J. Alfred Prufrock could hardly be expected to sing a love song. "J. Alfred Prufrock" indicates his formality; he is overeducated, eloquent, neurotic, and emotionally damaged. Literary devices always help readers have deeper understandings of characters and have better connections to them. Sandra Cisneros, the author of The House on Mange Street, also choses to use literary devices to give readers a clear picture of her character—Esperanza. Literary devices that she uses make this novel more infectious. Sandra Cisneros uses metaphor to emphasize the character’s struggle with growing up and employs personification to describe the character’s connection to their environments. Cisneros uses metaphor to highlight Esperanza’s struggle with growing up. Esperanza has a little sister named Nenny. As an older sister, she has the responsibility to take care of Nenny and make sure she does not play with bad children in the neighborhood. Esperanza does not have any friends her own age. She feels lonely and states, “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor” (Cisneros 9). It not only acts as a backdrop for the story; it also creates desired atmospheres which invoke our perceptions and magnify the emotions of the characters. It is often employed as a versatile medium of communication and enables the expression of ideas and thoughts in a powerful way enhancing the verve of literary works. In both the novels, Snow Country (1956) by Yasunari Kawabata and Eugenie Grandet (1883) by Honore de Balzac, the location mobilizes the plot, characters, mood and atmosphere. One of the most important locations in both the novels is the house. The prime function of any house is to provide shelter and security to its tenants. Yasunari Kawabata and Honore de Balzac both use the physical details within the house to reflect the mental state of their characters and bring to light their dilemmas. If Faust agrees to become his servant after death (i.e. to sell his soul), Mephisto will be his during life and will guarantee to provide all that Faust desires. Faust accepts this offer with some hesitation, for he doubts Mephisto's ability to fulfill his end of the bargain, but makes a significant change in the wording of the pact. Faust promises that if any moment, however brief, is so charged with pleasure for him that he says, "Linger a while! Thou art so fair!" that will be the day of his death and he will serve the devil forever after. Analysis Mephisto's costume in this scene is a reminder to Faust of the narrow limitations on the world in which he has been living until now. Faust's change in wording recalls the divine law that action is the ruling force of the universe, and raises the story of this Faust to a higher philosophical level than that of the hero of the old legends. The terms of the new pact mean that only when Faust is so satiated with pleasure that he chooses to be in a state of rest or nonaction will he be damned. In other words, the primal sin is to absolve oneself of the responsibility for motion and activity. This idea is in full accord with Mephisto's nihilistic principles so the devil accepts the amended pact. The readers realize that the tree symbolizes and stands for her obsession with the money because she didn’t want anyone to look at it as she wanted to decorate it perfectly to show off their new found wealth which filled her with unmeasurable amount of pride. There was a time when she would decorate the tree with her own hands but doing the same now was “thinking poor” for her. So she spends as much as she can because now they can afford to “let themselves go a bit”. Later when her friend Kristine comes over, the first thing she mentions is her husband’s new job agreeing that she now feels “so relieved and happy”. The proof for this is when she says that now they “have stacks and stacks of money and not a care in the world”. Among the authors best known from this time are Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Aristophanes. Euripides’s works have outlasted many of his contemporaries. In his play Medea, Euripides uses Medea’s character as a metaphor for women’s changing roles their taking a stand, their breaking the status quo hence overcoming the mandates of Greek culture. The play Medea by Euripides first appears in 431 B.C., the same year that the Peloponnesian war begins. Athens, ruled by Pericles from 447- 341 B.C. always made large amounts of money available for the festivals that include dramatic productions. Since theater was such an important part of the Athenian’s life, of course, it was at the center of the social and political facets as well. Thousands upon thousands of people would come to watch these productions. The festivals were very competitive, like a contest, and the results are permanently placed in the public records. She started to write poetry when she was looking after her children. She published her first collection in 1991 and she has been shortlisted for the TS Eliot poetry prize. A "ghazal" is an ancient Persian form of poetry, similar to a sonnet in that it is often part of a larger collection or sequence of poems. Khalvati's poem mentions a famous writer of ghazals called Rumi, who wrote a sequence to his close friend and spiritual inspiration Shamsuddin. Ghazals are often concerned with love and longing. Structure and language Structure Like traditional ghazals, this poem is made up of a sequence of two-line stanzas (or 'couplets'). The two lines of the couplets do not rhyme but the end of each couplet does, partly through the repetition of the word "me". Language Ghazal makes extensive use of metaphors to explore the relationship between the speaker and the one they love. Many of the metaphors present pairs of items or objects that complement each other, reflecting the way in which the speaker sees the relationship. In the second stanza the speaker describes the two sides of a relationship being like the "rhyme" and "refrain" (a repeated section of a poem, like a chorus). ...Nora’s marriage is more about appearances, role-playing and control tactics than true love. Marriage should be an institution about two souls entwining through the medium of love. In the 19th century it was considered to be an extremely sacred bond that a wife and husband had to abide by. The concepts of roles or game playing are a key role in approaching the themes of the play “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen. The title itself gives an indication of how the play is similar to a doll’s house; the characters, the settings and the situations depicted in the play are false at times and the play shows how certain aspects are different from reality. The entire play is woven around Torvald Helmer and Nora’s relationship. Their relationship seems perfect on the surface. They appear to be in love with each other and are happily married. Nora’s role in the play shows that she needs to be in control, to take the lead role, and that she is merely using other people as supporting characters because she does what she wants to do. She controls Torvald through by her childish behavior and flirts with Dr. Rank to assert herself on him. One question that frequently arises: How can one woman make so many unexpected transitions?
