As is known to us, although the concept of equality between women and men in society is widely recognized, but the phenomenon of the " glass ceiling " is impeding women obtaining top jobs . Most of the female staff engaged in low-level jobs in many large companies, very few senior female proportion, the proportion of men and women up to 10:1. And 95% of senior management is male, female managers earn on average only 68% of the males of the same level. In my opinion, that is still inequalities of women. Many excellent career women and female researchers are careful thought, patience and endurance, good communication and coordination. They have many advantages and senior management or scientific research need them. There are some examples of women have success in the top jobs. The first example is Meg Whitman who is currently the president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard, eBay former CEO. When she served as president and CEO. Of her successful leadership, eBay has become a global online marketplace for the world's number one consumer e-commerce sites. And she help grasp the direction of the eBay companies in the new economy, and the company has cultivated a truly global market. Also she become the most powerful women in business of U.S. "Fortune" magazine in 2004.The second example is in the politics. She is Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher who was dubbed the "Iron Lady" of the United Kingdom and is the first female leader of the British Conservative Party , is also the first female Prime Minister in British history , create reelection third term of office the 11-year-old record female Prime Minister. Her lead Britain out of the economic difficulties and help to increase the United Kingdom's international status. In 2004, a MORI survey, evaluation of Thatcher in the 20th century, the British Prime Minister was fourth. The tired example is a great women…...

Should Athletes Get Paid

...Should student athletes get paid? COMM/215 The question of should student athletes get paid is an argument that is growing in debate in recent years. Mostly pertaining to college Football and Basketball. Especially when the revenue generated from these sports rival those of its professional counterparts. Some would argue that receiving a full athletic scholarship is payment enough. Or, student athletes are no different from any college student working their way through college. However, these student athletes are not guaranteed full scholarships and deal mostly the same pressures of athletes that make their living playing these sports. For example, a four-year scholarship is not available for student athletes, students receive one year renewable contracts which are at the discretion of the coach. “The current one-year deals are, believe it or not, renewable at the discretion of coaches, who can effectively cut injured or underperforming “student athletes,” as the N.C.A.A. likes to call them” (Nocera, 2011). Student athletes can be cut for anything from performance on the field to behavioral conduct, or poor grades. These athletes are not afforded special privileges however, unlike their working student counterparts, they make their school millions of dollars in revenue each year. “College football and men’s basketball have become such huge commercial enterprises that together they generate more than......

College Should Not Get Paid

...K.Williams 1 I feel that college students shouldn’t be paid. A college student represents his or her institution and it is his responsibility to play with honesty and devotion. Many students find it the best way to earn money and leave the education behind. [pic] Sport is necessary but there should be schedules for playing sports and studying. In my opinion, a good player should be given scholarships and medals as an encouragement to be a wining athlete and a successful student. Let us also not forget, talks of collegiate pay for play, the reason college athletes are in school in the first place is they are here to acquire an education (hence the word student before athlete) which in turn will catapult them to lucrative careers down the road. “Sports as great as it is, is at least in college, a side show and should remain that way if for nothing else to protect the innocence and integrity of the game. For the athletes who are great and posses the potential to elevate their games to the next level, they will eventually be more than adequately compensated for their athleticism to the tune of millions in some cases. And before you under value the worth of a college education, look at it like this for some perspective. A college education, especially an American, one of the most desired attributes worldwide.” .”(Powell, A 2004) Every day Latinos climb on boats, along with anything else that will float, to try to navigate themselves on to......

Should Student-Athletes Get Paid?

...Thomas Bessinger Professor Hortman February 18, 2014 Should Student-Athletes get paid? A very popular question that has been lingering around the sports world for sometime now is whether or not student-athletes should get paid. There are a lot of different opinions about this topic. The NCAA does not allow student-athletes to receive any type of benefits of any kind from the university; if the student-athlete does, he is no longer an amateur athlete and can no longer compete at the college level. This problem has been common over the past years and is causing athletes and universities to be penalized. If the NCAA would allow student-athletes to receive some benefits this would not be as common. Therefore, student-athletes should get paid because they are making money for their university, many student-athletes cannot have a job, and it is unfair for the NCAA to profit off of student-athletes. This reasoning has led many people to try and incorporate change in the collegiate world. Student-athletes, particularly at “big time” schools, have been bringing in millions of dollars in for their universities. The universities are selling jerseys that have the athletes’ names on the back, but the student-athletes are not receiving anything from that (Chen, 2013). Student-athletes are not even allowed to sell their jerseys or other apparel that is given to them by the university. In 2010 the NCAA did an investigation and found out that AJ Green sold one of his jerseys for $1000...

Should College Athletes Get Paid

...College Athletics: Career vs. Experience The Debate Some college athletes and their supporters have debated over the years that students should be paid a salary. Those who are in disagreement argue that intercollegiate athletics should be viewed as one part of the college experience and not a career. They express that athletes are already receiving payment in the form of scholarships. But is it enough? Most scholarships cover approximately $20,000 to $35,000 worth of college expenses, including books, fees, tuition, and room and board (Brian, 2014). The Numbers Looking at the research provided by the National Athletic Trainer’s association, approximately 200,000 injuries are reported by college athletes caused by the strenuous nature of their sport (Thomas, 2014). Nearly 30% of these injuries have been chalked up to “over-use” injuries (injuries caused by long training sessions and repetitive motions), with women making up 62% of those injuries, and are more commonly found in low-contact sports. “Overuse injuries may present not only physical challenges but also psychological ones that could significantly affect an athlete’s recovery and performance” said Tracey Covassin, a co-author of a study for the Journal of Athletic Training publication that researches injuries and their impact on college athletes (Cody, 2012). Another aspect of this problem that needs attention is what happens to these student athletes that have career-ending or long-term disabilities due to......

Should Women Be Home-Makers?

...Should women be home-makers? (AGAINST) Women should not be home-makers In recent years, women’s roles have had a positive change and they are treated better at home and at work. Since the roles have changed, women do not need to stay at home and be home-makers because they have proved that they are capable of anything. This essay will discuss against the topic that women should be home-makers. Some of the issues that will be discussed are women have been given opportunities to get an education and go to work. They should not be just home-makers because they need to be treated equally to men. Women should be encouraged to diversify their life choices and not just stay at home and be home-makers. Opportunities for women to have education to get a job allow them not to restrict themselves by staying at home being housewives. In reality, women were not given a standing in society and were not exposed to the outer world. However, women nowadays have been given the opportunity to be educated and to work for which they get paid and their families receive the benefits of a good standard of living. Their children get good education, good clothing and other benefits in society. In this century, women do not want to be just home-makers. They get good work and education by being responsible to their families economically. This allows women to be empowered in their lives. Treating women equally to men has changed the roles of women who did not have that privilege some years back. Over......

Women Feel More Guilt

...March 2010 - Research from the University of the Basque Country published in the Spanish Journal of Psychology found that despite changing attitudes towards interpersonal relationships, women feel significantly more guilt than men. This did not simply reflect higher levels of this emotion in women but a lack of it in men. Lead author Itziar Etxebarria explained: "Our initial hypothesis was that feelings of guilt are more intense among females, not only among adolescents but also among young and adult women, and they also show the highest scores for interpersonal sensitivity." The study was based on data from an equal number of male and female subjects across the age range: 156 teenagers, 96 young people and 108 adults. Participants were asked to identify situations in which they felt most guilt. They also completed interpersonal sensitivity tests - the Davis Empathetic Concern Scale, and a questionnaire on Interpersonal Guilt, developed specifically for this research. Researchers found that intensity of habitual guilt was significantly higher for women in all three age groups but particularly in those between 40-50 years. They also identified gender differences in interpersonal sensitivity, although the disparity was less marked in that age group. Generally, levels of interpersonal sensitivity in men (especially those aged between 25-33) was found to be "comparatively low". Researchers suggest this could have detrimental effects on relationships and social......

Why Men Still Get More Promotions Than Women Summary

...managers on women and men as leaders of business improved significantly. Women are increasingly treated equal to men in promotions and job offers. One way that women are becoming more active in pursuit of a better name for themselves in a given enterprise, it is with the help of "Mentors". These are people who can guide them better by giving them important advice and teaching them stuff they can be used for better view. "In a 2010 World Economics Forum Report on corporate practices for gender diversity in 20 Countries, 59% Of The Companies Surveyed Say THEY LED Internally offer mentoring and Networking Program, and 28% say THEY Have Women-specific programs." There is also another term, the "sponsorship". This is when the mentor uses his influence senior leaders to promote his "mentee". A survey was created to know why men who receive the "mentoring" are better than women who have the same benefits as them. The results showed that women are over-"mentored" compared to men then they do not get the time of sponsorship in return. They are often suspected it on their abilities as a leader or future director, making the leap to a higher level of mentoring more difficult. The data show that both sexes receive the same average amount of trading post, but men are still receiving more promotions in the field, up to 15% more. At Deutsche Bank, women left their positions in the company often simply because they were offered a job that gave him a title they never thought to......

People Should Not Get Married

...Marriage is a necessity. In ancient times, getting married and having children are an inevitable job. At that time, there was not much love in the marriage, and the relationship was purely a constraint. Nowadays, a majority of people thinks marriage is a symbol of love. They look forward to living together for a long time, so they choose to form a family. But from where I stand, getting married is not a good choice. First of all, one of the most important aims of marriage is having children. But now with the rising divorce rate, more and more choose not to get married, they think marriage is a form of cohabitation, and without marriage they still can have children., If it is found that living together is unpleasant. It is also very easy to separate. In the second place, marriage will restrict a person’s freedom. You will find that your spouse is your first priority. Think about it: after you get married, you need to report where and what you are doing. What’s more, you may disconnect with your friends of you opposite sex because it will cause some misunderstanding. Last but not least, love is a mystery and getting married will ruin it. Marriage, by definition, contact two people as a family, You neither want nor need your love defined in business or legal terms. The beauty of love is that it’s undefined to begin with and always full of change and expectation. On the other hand, there’re still many people who look forward to entering into marriage. These kind of people......

Should Students Get Paid at School

...Should Students Get Paid at School? Would you like to get paid at school? The idea of students getting paid at school is very important to think about. My personal opinion is that students should get paid at school because it gives the student a real world experience. I think students should get paid at school because students will learn to be independent. If students get good marks they will earn money. Since the students will earn money, they will rely on themselves to buy supplies, clothes, games and more for themselves. Students will not have to go to their parents to ask for money to buy things. Students won’t have to go their parents to ask for money when there are fundraisers at school or any trips. Since the students have money they will learn to spend money wisely. They won’t spend money on things they If students start to get paid at school they will experience having a job. They will learn that if they do well they will get paid more which is what happens at a job. When you do a good job at work your boss pays your more. Also students will learn to handle money. When students start to earn money they will know how to use and spend the money. They won’t spend the money on useless things as much as they would when they don’t get paid at school. Students don’t understand how much work it takes to earn money and so they keep on spending money. When they start earning money they will understand how to use......

Should Student Athletes Get Paid

...Layton Professor Bird EN 300 11/18/14 Are College Athletes Going to be Paid? The NCAA is one of the top organizations in the world that brings in billions of dollars in revenue on college athletics alone most notably with college football and college basketball. Yes some of these athletes do get compensated with some sort of scholarship which does help out with their expenses but the chances of an athlete receiving an athletic scholarship that is worth anything meaningful is less than 2%. A full ride scholarship might as well be compared to as finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In cases that an athlete does receive a scholarship this does not come close to covering the expenses of tuition yet alone all of the other expense such has room and board, food and everything else a human being needs to survive. Playing a colligate sport is just as demanding as a full time job and according to a survey done by “[1] The NCAA in 2011 playing football required 43.3 hours per week; college baseball, 42.1 hours; men's basketball, 39.2 hours; and women's basketball, 37.6 hours.” So these athletes have no time with school and their respective sport to find a job to help them with other expenses so they have to rely on student loans, grants or their parents to help them get through school. This also makes it much more difficult for a student athlete to pursue a more rigorous degree such as sciences and engineering. One problem that I have with the NCAA is all the......

Women Early Jobs

...opened job opportunities, not only to men but also to women. Despite it being advantageous to women, industrialism has imposed a challenge to men, as women are now going for the same position as men in the job market. Gender segregation has affected women in various ways some of which include; low-security conditions, limited job opportunities, poor remuneration and unhealthy working environment just to mention a few. Prior to the nineteenth century, outside the domestic sphere, women had limited sources of income. Industrialization had an undeniable impact on the role of women in all aspects. It affected the way people lived because of the demands of exporting and importing of the industrial economy. Instead a daughter working in the family household, she was seen as a source of income to the family (O’Kelly and Carney, 1986).Sexual harassment and abuse have often been part of the work environment. Many of the supervisors, mostly men, took advantage of their authority and abused young girls and women. In her autobiography, Mary Anderson & Winslow (1951) discusses Anderson’s life as a factory worker. Anderson was 22 years old and she was a member of the trade union movement. Particularly in one of her jobs with Selz and Company, “it was a big place with one thousand workers which the majority was men”. In one instance, she was dismissed for the reason that the supervisor thought she had started the strikes but found out she did not. She got back on the......

Should Women Serve in Combat

...“Should Women Serve in Ground Combat Arms?” The problems of integrating women fully into combat ground roles are continually being addressed by the Department of Defense through studies to try to determine the major concerns and points of resistance among military personnel. Despite the involvement of women in the military since 1901, the medical needs of women in combat have not be properly addressed or reasonably understood. There is ongoing progress in research and treatment efforts, determining the physiological differences between the sexes, medical issues such as susceptibility to stress fractures, pregnancy, menstrual cycles, and breastfeeding as well as leadership and unit factors which must continue as women are fully integrated in to ground combat arms. A greater understanding of these issues will be beneficial to all services as well as genders during wartime. The ability of women to cope on the battlefield is plagued with mixed emotions. Some same women are incapable of handling combat, physically. The service members currently serving in assignments such as Special Forces units have expressed concerns about serving with women. Many feel the presence of women causes a lost to their elite status and of fear from the opposition of their esteemed unit. Other concerns of behavior during menstruation affecting women’s judgment may also cause other problems. Despite the concerns, each individual will have the opportunity to meet the......
