Introduction to Literature Joshua Mills
March 2, 2015

A literary analysis is very different from most writings, as its interpretive. What I may take away or pick up on is different than what you might interpret from it. To successfully analyze literature, you’ll need to remember that authors make specific choices for particular reasons. We have to remain objective to why the author added that detail or why they used that literary trick in that story. That’s exactly what I did to break down Things They Carried and A Rock Trying to Be A Stone.
Both stories have many literary techniques like, being told in first person, imagery, simile, and a similar conflict. First I made sure to read the short stories silent, once I read it silently I reread this article, but this time out loud and I focused on particular points that stood at to me. Nothing in particular, just points that stood out to me and aroused a conflict to the story.
In the Things They Carried it was Lavender’s death. That made this short story go from a very descriptive story with a lot of imaginary to deeper personally story about a boy having to become a man. Lt. Cross had a infatuation with Martha and used that to clear his mind from the war. After Lavender’s death he saw the failure in eyes of this squad. They all had failed Lavender. Kiowa say’s it was fate, but Lt. Cross, sees his death his fault as he didn’t lead his men as he should have. Lt Cross’s conflict made him realize that he needs to step up and be the leader his men need him to be. His love for Martha won’t do him any good if he is sent home in a body bag.
A Rock Trying to Be A Stone presented a similar conflict and message, but to a different audience. Troncoso did a good job tailoring his message to the more lower income Hispanic families. I can definitely see how Turi would have his feelings towards Joe and…...

Reflective Journal 2 Week 4

...Michael Louis Mitchell Reflective Journal 2 English 115 Dr. Rachel Deluise 29 October, 2013 When I read articles in newspapers, magazines and websites, sometimes I am frustrated due to the lack of factual information. I feel the writer has a responsibility to the readers that they have completed as much research prior to going to print. I know many readers who rely on their favorite journalist simply assume the information they are reading is accurate. Information that is unsubstantiated can lead to debates, lawsuits and someone losing their job. Some authors will update the in the next issue but often times it is too late and the damage is done. The way I try and approach what I am writing is to first know if I already have knowledge about what I am researching. I ask myself if I know anything about the subject and where I can find more information about the matter. I also try to find anyone I know personally who may have extensive knowledge or experience on the subject. This can also lead to additional sources. I also gather information from my local library and use the internet. Once I have gathered all of my sources. I then go through each of what I had gathered and determine what will go into my paper. We can face many challenges when it comes to research. Very little information may be available on the internet or libraries. Experts may be unreachable by phone or deceased. It is possible you may have to travel to get the information you need which......

...Unit 4 Journal Jasmine Battle IT 590 – Kaplan University 11/27/2013 Unit 4 Journal In Unit 4, I learned how hacking have become a huge issue with technology in today’s society. I learn three ways to capture someone username and password. You can do that by eavesdropping, dumpster diving, and social engineering. People are also hacking into users’ networks. Sidejacking is a way where hijackers capture a user cookie. I learned in details more about malware. Malware consists of virus, worm, and spyware. Viruses are a code that has been added or embedded into another application. Worm is a self-contaminated program which can spread throughout the network. Spyware is a program that communicates over the internet without user’s consent. I learned the difference between phishing and spear-phishing. Phishing is when a large scale of information is capture from various computer users. Spear-phishing is when they go through email address to select a particular group of recipients to target. I learned that you can still make money even when you are a cyber-criminal. However, it is kind of a good choice to make to give to companies that are looking for a protection shield. I had already learned about online voting which could be a quicker way to save time on manual counting. In conclusion, I have learned a variety of information that could carry me forward with my education of learning something new every time. Knowing that you can become a hacker and not charge for a......

The song title is Super Country Cowboy by Doug Briney. I choose this song because I absolutely dislike country music and can’t stand listening to it. 2. What emotional and mental responses did you have to the song the first time you listened to it? Why do you think you had this response? Journal Week 1

...• Describe the steps of your current personal writing process. For example, how do you approach a writing assignment for a class? The steps of my personal writing process are a bit disorganized, but they have worked for me thus far. I’ve never practiced the prewriting techniques that I read about this week, and that is probably why it takes me so long to write my paper and polish it. I usually ensure that I have clear and precise understanding of the topic. If the topic is my choice, I try to find one that I’m very passionate about to ensure that I encounter fewer issues. I open a document page and start writing. I write as much as I can without researching, during this step I usually have a variety of random sentences and paragraphs. I start my conducting my research, and then I’ll go back to my paper periodically. I do however; make sure that I cite my sources as I go along to avoid any type of plagiarism. After I feel that I’ve done enough research, I usually start putting paragraphs together and trying to make my paper flow. Following the completion of my rough draft, I usually print my paper out so I can read it to myself. I found this works better for me when it comes to finding errors in my work. I correct my errors and reprint the document and reread it .I will step away for a couple of hours and come back and reread my paper once again. I’ve noticed that by taking a break and coming back to my paper with a clear mind, that I’m better able to concentrate on my......

My Journal Week 2

... My Journal HIS/ 120 09/28/2015 My Journal HIS/ 120 09/28/2015 Dear Diary, Today is November 4, 1920. My mother and father, my brother, Jonathan, my sister, Rosy and I are forced to leave our country in Eastern Europe; migrating to the United States of America. My mother told us about her close friends that she had known since she was a child, moved there. Her best friend Charlotte wrote letters to her every week. Explaining that America has a lot of job opportunities, education, and that there’s freedom there to live. Verses staying in our home country where anti-Semites would start riots. 1. So we packed all our belongings and took whatever we could carry. After purchasing our tickets to sail away, we entered the biggest ship I’ve ever seen. I had many emotions and thoughts rushing through my mind. Feeling nervous about moving to a place I’ve never been… Sad that there’s a war coming to erupt… Worried for the people that we’re leaving behind… Exhausted from stress and not getting enough sleep... What’s really going to happen when we get to America? I hate the feeling of not knowing what’s going to come because I feel then I have to prepare myself for the worse. On the ship there were more than 2,000 Jews. Everybody was very close together and compacted inside. We had to make our own beds and we had to keep each other warm. It took us days, weeks for our arrival. I couldn’t keep track. Some people eventually gotten seasick because of the rocking back and forth. On the......

Journal 4

...Margo Moriarty Journal 4 A tall Muslim teacher in a burka. When I first chose it I did it for a purpose. At my job I had taken a sick day for EID because my boyfriend is Muslim and we wanted to celebrate while I used it as a learning experience. The discrimination I have endured ever since is sickening. There were people calling him a terrorist and telling my supervisor that He and I were part of Isis. It is sad that people are so brain washed by the T.V. What makes me even sadder is that there are teachers, children, and families who have dealt with this ignorance their entire life in America. Donald Trump is promoting this racism and it’s like America is going in reverse to the time where there were slaves. What’s even sicker is that more than half of the population is supporting this disturbing behavior and inequalities throughout the nation! To make it easy, I will use my boyfriend’s background is being from Morocco. I come from a family that’s mother stayed at home and the father worked on a College Institute as a security guard. The family lived in a government owned property provided through his job. The pay there is low and schools are unfunded. People think of Morocco being one of the luckier countries being so close to Europe , but it is still a third world country. There is no plumbing, hot water, and other things in the homes that we American’s take for granted. My boyfriend deals with the ignorance by either ignoring, explaining the real view (not isis......
