Posted by Aoife Gorey on Tue, Mar 31, 2015 Whether you have worked your way up the corporate ladder or started your own business, the path to leadership isn’t an easy one. There will be good times, stressful times, and terrible times, but a great leader is always able to lead a team to success, regardless of the situation at hand. Simply holding a position in leadership doesn’t make someone a good leader. A truly great leader understands the many different factors that come with leading others, and strives to help others reach their goals; they are always developing themselves, and act as visionaries for their organization.
Leadership is one of the hottest topics in the business world, with millions of publications on the subject; from books, to blogs, to articles and more. We gathered some of the leadership qualities that we believe are possessed by many of the world's greatest leaders and formed the list below.

Do you have what it takes to be a great leader?
Honesty
The foundation of any relationship, both personal and professional, is honesty. People want to work for a leader they can trust−a leader that has morals, values, and integrity. They want to work for a company that offers a great product or service they can believe in, and that has an honorable reputation. “Honest Abe,” or Abraham Lincoln, is said to have been one of the greatest Presidents to ever lead our country, and he didn’t achieve his success or earn that nickname by being dishonest. Your workers want to feel good about their jobs−it’s important to establish core values for both the business and yourself as a leader, and to then live and lead by those values as an example to your employees.
Communication
Without clear communication, your employees won’t understand your mission, goals, and vision. Employees want to work toward something they believe in, so it’s important they…...

...What Would You Do? Scenario 1- Della the Delinquent Cat Lady As the president of the board of directors of the cat shelter, I am faced with rather or not Ms. Della should remain as part of the staff at the cat shelter. There are several problems that have been brought to my attention and I feel that now is the time to figure out exactly what should be done regarding the matter. After, evaluating the situation and giving it a great deal of consideration, I have come up several solutions to the problem. One of the easier solutions would be to just let Della go. I have considered retraining Della as manager of the cat shelter, or having a sit down with Ms. Della and asking her how she thinks she is performing as manager. Also, I think that asking Ms. Della to step down as the manager and giving her a position that she can handle. Although, these may seem like the best solution to resolve the situation, I have to look at the pros and cons of any decision that I make. If I decide to let Della go, it might benefit the company in the sense that we can find someone that is really dedicated and committed to for fulfilling their position. On the hand, Della is already going through a tough time, and firing her will not only affect her, but affect her children as well whom she is trying to provide for. Retraining Della could really help her gain a better understanding as what is expected from her as a manger, and she could gain more knowledge that may help her excel as a......

What Would You Do

...watched video clips from ABC’s show “What would you do?” one of situations in the video was a woman with OCD with a condition of germ phobia. She had dropped her groceries on the floor and could not purchase them for she felt they were “dirty”. The cashier was playing a roll of a not so very understanding person. He kept implying that they were not dirty and that the food was fine, one customer in line tried to explain to that OCD is Obsession Compulsive Disorder and that once something isn’t right they mentally cannot handle it. In the second situation there was a man in a liquor store with his son purchasing alcohol for a party that his son was going to have. You could tell that the son was very uncomfortable with the whole thing and that the father was pressuring him. A bunch of people disagreed with the actions the father was taking. In the final scenario a woman was breast feeding her child that was at the age of four in a coffee shop. One of the actors was playing the role as a disgusted costumer in the coffee shop and was making a big scene asking the woman to do that elsewhere. A lot of customer didn’t seem to have an issue with the woman breast feeding her child in the open public. Critique: All the scenarios had good points to them, if I was the person in line at the grocery store I would have done the same thing that the woman had done while she was in line. Some people have no courtesy and are just plain rude. It would have been quite difficult for me to be......

Love What You Do

...They're stuck, unhappy, and have no idea what to do about it, except move to another job. Mary Lyn Miller, veteran career consultant and founder of the Life and Career Clinic, says that when most people are unhappy about their work, their first thought is to get a different job. Instead, Miller suggests looking at the possibility of a different life. Through her book, "8 Myths of Making a Living," as well as workshops, seminars and personal coaching and consulting, she has helped thousand of dissatisfied workers re-assess life and work. Like the way of Zen, which includes understanding of oneself as one really is, Miller encourages job seekers and those dissatisfied with work or life to examine their beliefs about work and recognize that, "in many cases your beliefs are what brought you to where you are today." You may have been raised to think that women were best at nurturing and caring and, therefore, should be teachers and nurses. So that's what you did. Or, perhaps you were brought up to believe that you should do what your father did, so you have taken over the family business, or become a dentist "just like dad." If this sounds familiar, it's probably time to look at the new possibilities for your future. Miller developed a 7-step process to help potential job seekers assess their current situation and beliefs, identify their real passion, and start on a journey that allows them pursue their passion through work. Do You Have Jelly?

...TYPE/TOPIC OF JOURNAL: Do you have Jelly? JOURNAL CONTENT: Section 1 – Critical Incident The nurse that I was observing had taken her lunch and I decided to take this time to go ahead and log in to the computer and look into some of the records of the patients. I hear someone saying help, help. I look around and see no one except TCU students that are sitting at computers picking out their patients for the next day. So I quickly get up and head in to the room. This is not one of my patients, but it is a patient that I had helped with earlier. I head in and introduce myself again while asking the women what I can do to help her. She appears to be about 70 years of age and she is crying. I don’t see anything that appears to be physically hurting her so I ask her what is wrong and she says she is in pain, saying the worst pain she has ever been in. She says it’s as much pain as she was in when she came in. She says her catheter hurts. I know she doesn’t have one I helped take it out earlier. I tell her that she doesn’t have a catheter in anymore and that I am going to go get her nurse for her. She says okay thank you. I go to get the nurse and he is now sitting at a computer and I tell him the situation. He says, “Yeah I just gave her some pain meds and anxiety meds it should work in like 15 min or so.” He was not acting as if he was going to go in there. I say okay I will go let her know. I head back in the room and her hands are in the air and she is crying and......

What Do You Expect

...Courtney Gaylor GS1145 Charles Bozeman January 6, 2015 Most people have no clue as to what they're going to do with their lives and a lot of them do indeed turn out to be software engineers. Most software engineers do their jobs very poorly, many are average and a few are actually good, but everyone has a place in the industry. I am pursuing a degree at ITT Technical Institute in hopes of falling in the category of “actually good”. I feel that what I need to be successful is hands on learning. At ITT I plan to achieve a career, not just to float through life one “job” after another. A goal that I started to attain before leaving high school is developing the ability to see the value in maintaining a positive attitude, regardless of the circumstances. When I include my goal in the curriculum, I have a better understanding on how positive words, positive character traits and positive thinking can impact life immediately now and in the future. Another goal of mine is to be happy. To be happy is the most important thing there is because you only have one life and if you go through it fighting, competing and struggling you have wasted your one life. Being a human on this planet is like winning the lotto and if people would act that way we could all help each other and try to make the time we have not be a waste. I think that's my ultimate goal... I don't know that it's everyone's, if it's THE ultimate goal or even if there is a THE ultimate goal. Also I was thinking that......

Do You Have a Strategy

...Do you have a strategy? 100 Technology Executives were polled from the Fortune 500 by the SBS team at Long View and asked one question. “Do you have a strategy?” That question though requires a definition. What is strategy? Michael E. Porter published a paper in conjunction with Harvard Business School stating clearly what it is not. Strategy is not operational effectiveness. While operations are necessary they conclude, they are not sufficient nor a strategy. We agree. For over twenty years technology has been a vehicle to drive operational efficiency of business processes. As an industry we have become masters of taking both complex and simple tasks and providing both scale and cost savings through said IT operations. This worked and worked extremely well for most IT executives as we could execute with multi-discipline partnerships, segment technology stacks and general provide core applications to our business partners. However we would suggest we are on the midst of our Apollo moment in technology. 1969 saw one of man’s greatest accomplishments achieved. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon a mere ten years after Kennedy’s bold challenge. A relatively insurmountable task when you consider we hadn’t even sent a man to space 9yrs earlier, and yet now we were walking on the moon broadcasting for the world to see. Yet the 1970’s were not as kind to our bold space explorer’s, the public interest was low and life in space appeared to be relatively routine. ......

...watching their every move. With the freedom comes the threat of identity theft. No matter how secure a system is someone is always ahead of the game finding ways to slip through the cracks. According to Alan Paller, “there are at least 100 countries actively doing cyber-espionage (M, 2010).” In the healthcare environment you have many people accessing and using the intranet system. The IT department has the job of monitoring and blocking excess from internet sites without security clearance or certificates out of date. Unknown to the IT department is that the staff can be trying to access these sites which are not allowed. This would put the healthcare organization at risk of scripts slipping in (M, 2010). these scripts are security breaches which are used to steal patient’s personal information. Anti-virus software programs are not looking for these scripts they are looking for files. These scripts can come from social media networks which staff may be accessing. According to Dave Meilek, “most of today’s threats are blended attacks propagated on legitimate sites like Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, and many others.” (M, 2010) Attacks can come through emails which have suspicious scripts attached that help them get into the system finding the crack in the network and software. If these scripts are not caught in time they can infect the whole system. Staff must be fully trained and made aware of the threat of a...

...Personal Skills and Qualities Personal Example in Practice Technical Skills When completing my GCSEs I had to complete an ICT course in order to achieve the GCSE, as well as this where I work I’m obligated to use technology such as the till on a regular basis. Specialist Skills As a young child I took part in competitions such as riding and ballet, this meant I had to learn new skills especially for the cause, this I used mainly for these activities only. Not Who You Are but What You Do Determines Effective Leadership

...Not who you are but what you do determines Effective Leadership Jonah Levy Leadership is an Importance and vital characteristic that many do carry within them. Many people believe it is who you are the shows what type of leader a person may be. Is it the status of wealth, power, and looks? It is not what your wealth but what you do as a leader that will make you a leader of men. It is the decisions that someone makes in confidence that will show your true leadership quality. It is those importance decisions that someone makes and how they engage it. A action centered leadership role is what will help those in leadership and those wanting to become effective leaders. John Adair proposed a model in 1973 on what a leadership role should have looked like. He argued that it is not who you are but what you do will establish you as a leader. He believed that leaders should balance the behavior needs of task, team, and the individual within a diagram he created and the center of that diagram was the best approach to balancing those needs. Under the behavior task circle a leader had to provide clear objectives, provide appropriate procedures, evidence of progress, and deadlines are being met. A leader’s behavior under team a leader should commitment, trust& openness, sense of purpose, stability, and fun. Last a leader’s behavior under individual should be to include, make contribution, to be respected, receive feedback, feel safe, and grow. Adair believe if a leader...

...geographic territory under Roman control grew, the use of Latin as a common language also spread. In areas under Roman control, Latin was the spoken and written language of the courts and commerce, as well as the language of the Christian church. As the Roman Empire expanded, Latin served as a common language that allowed for people of diverse linguistic backgrounds to be able to communicate. Latin, like other languages past and present, had more than one form and changed over time because it was both written and spoken, and the educational level or social status of the writer or speaker often determined the final form of the language. Latin was also influenced by local languages spoken or written within the larger territory under the influence of what later came to be known as the Roman Empire. During the Carolingian Renaissance, throughout the reign of Charlemagne and his successors, the development of Latin literacy was greatly promoted. Although reading and writing were skills that some people had, literacy was not widespread before that time. Literacy in Latin was generally limited to people of the upper classes and members of the clergy. Charlemagne invited Alcuin of York to become his personal tutor and the head of his court school. Charlemagne charged Alcuin with the development of a literacy curriculum for children that would provide for their instruction in reading and writing, as well as for further study in the liberal arts and theology, thereby also furthering......
