Critical Thinking - ISDS 3711

The purpose of this assignment is to enhance students’ ability to frame a problem in the context of quantitative decision analysis, to organize and analyze data by using the appropriate quantitative tools and computer programs, and to present the results and implications of the results.

1) Case Study

Students in ISDS 3711 are introduced to different quantitative tools. They practice how to apply these tools, how to formulate problems and how to solve them using Excel and different Excel add-ins in the HW assignments. Problems in HW assignments are typically well structured. The students are told which tool they should apply and they are provided with the data that they need. These structured HW assignments do not teach students how to approach an unstructured decision situation where it is not clear which tools to apply and which information to collect. The following HW assignment has been developed as a way for students to practice these important skills.

The assignment is based on the Case: Project Portfolio Management at XYZ Pharma that was developed at London School of Economics. The case describes the R&D project selection and prioritization problem at a major pharmaceutical company, a recurrent issue of strategic importance to the company. Students will not be asked to conduct an actual quantitative analysis but to start thinking about how they would frame the project, which quantitative tools they might use and which information to collect.

Students will work on this assignment individually. They will be asked to read the case and then answer the following questions. We do not ask the students to actually conduct a quantitative analysis but we ask them to formulate the problem in the context a quantitative analysis.

It gives individuals the ability to engage in a reflective and independent thinking (Lau & Chan, 2013). I work in the construction business that builds metal buildings for Costco Wholesale. We have built over 500 buildings for the past 30 years. We begin our process by selling the project to the customer and then transferring the project to a Project Manager and Superintendent that has the tools to ensure the project runs smoothly. When we build a Costco we have a specific amount of days that we have to construct the building from bottom to the top. The entire store has to be enclosed within 65 days. Our company works side by side with the general contractor providing them with the schedule that we have to follow. This schedule is detailed out from how many walls will be up to when the skylights will be installed. ...The topic of thinking can be profound one, including many voluntary and involuntary procedures. These include the sense of a problem, the observation of given conditions, the formation and rational elaboration of a suggested conclusion, and the active experimental testing (Pg. 151). Thinking is very significant because it allows us to analyze, evaluate, explain, and restructure certain situations, which ideally decreases the risk of acting on, or thinking with, false ideas. Many times a thinker, even after carrying out these steps, can make mistakes due to a thinker incorrectly extending ones own belief system beyond its reasonable limits or failure to know all of the facts. Critical thinking is based on concepts and principles. Of course, thinking does not always assure that one will reach either the truth or correct conclusions. As Dewey states, thinking always involves a risk. Certainty cannot be guaranteed in advance (Pg. 148). First, one may not have all the relevant information needed. Important information may remain undiscovered, or the information may not be obvious at first. Also, many mistakes from the thinker may come into plays such as unjustified assumptions, use of inappropriate concepts, failure to notice important hints, or the use a biased or unfair point of view. ...Thinking about Thinking Critical thinking is a process of testing an argument or observation for legitimacy. (Moore & Parker, 2012) Critical thinking includes deductive and inductive arguments. One important survival skill humans have is critical thinking. Had our ancestors not had the ability to think critically, we would not be here. When determining the worth of an argument, it is necessary to break an argument into parts. One must determine the premise or premises and conclusion. Had our ancestors not learned that some red berries can kill you, many more would have eaten these berries; destroying the future of the gene pool. We learned that premises are statements of assumed or known facts which should not contradicts each other. (Moore & Parker, 2012) A conclusion is an assumption drawn from the premises. For example; one premise could be that two dogs sit before you. Another could be that both are white with black spots. Both statements suggest that the dogs belong to the same breed. We begin thinking critically by identifying the premises, then examining each for soundness. Any vagueness or uncertainty must be determined within the suggestions. In the case of a deductive argument, the conclusion must be true if the premises are true. A critical thinker process that I became well aware of that; I thought was just regular thinking was simply preparing dinner meals. I just simply looked at its’ association with natural living.
