[Considered one of the most unconventional and outspoken fashion designers in the world, Westwood rose to fame in the late 1970s when her early designs helped shape the look of the punk rock movement.]
1. She came from humble beginnings, working-class parents. As Vivienne would later recall, her childhood years were far from London's high life. By the early 1960s Vivienne's life seemed established, embarked on work as a teacher. Then, however, everything changed. Her first marriage dissolved and she met Malcolm McLaren, an art student and future manager of the Sex Pistols. Through her new partner, Westwood, who'd begun making jewelry on the side, was introduced to a new world of creative freedom and the power art had on the political landscape. “I latched onto Malcolm as somebody who opened doors for me," Westwood said.”
2. In 1971, McLaren opened a boutique shop at 430 Kings Road in London and started filling it with Westwood's designs. It proved to be an important fashion center for the punk movement. When McLaren became manager of the Sex Pistols, it was Westwood's designs that dressed the band and help it carve out its identity. But as the punk movement faded, Westwood was hardly content to rest on her laurels. She's constantly been ahead of the curve, not just influencing fashion, but often times dictating it. After her run with the Sex Pistols, Westwood went an entirely new direction with her Pirate collection of frilly shirts and other attire. Her styles have also included the mini-crini of the 1980s and the frayed tulle and tweed suit of the 1990s. She's even proved it's perfectly possible to make a subversive statement with underwear.

I don’t think so.” That was a comment I made to a group of colleagues about twenty-five years ago when I was working with an international CPA firm. I can’t recall many specific conversations from so long ago, but I do remember this one. I think it stuck in my mind because the managing partner of my office overhead my comment and interrupted the conversation. He responded that he had seen plenty of instances in my work that demonstrated my creativity and he thought I was quite creative. That conversation was before the October 2001 Enron fiasco and at that time, accountants serving “sophisticated” clients were expected to sometimes be creative in their accounting practices. Not to say that I ever witnessed any “creativity” such as that shown at Enron. If, however, if a client wanted to record a transaction a certain way, for example, a good CPA would do his best to find a way to support his client’s accounting. A great CPA was nearly always successful. Since then, I have left public accounting (pre-Enron, not as a result) and have been on the client side for the last twenty or so years. I have known many people that where drafted during this time. One of those people was my farter who joined the Air Force because his draft number was up and served in the Vietnam War. I can remember walking in a mall with my dad in the mid 70’s and a woman yelling at him calling him a baby killer. I was only eight or nine at the time but I can still see her yelling today. This is why the wall is so very important to Vietnam Veterans. This wall shows that over fifty eight thousand men and women died for their service during this war. This wall is more than just a large piece of art for many people it is a memorial of their loved ones and friends. The Raft of the Medusa is a painting based on an event during the artist Theodore Gericault’s lifetime. The event was a ship call the Medusa stuck a sand bar and had to be abandon. The captain only let wealthy and well-connected people use the lifeboats. This forced the rest of the crew to make a raft out of parts of the ship. The rate at one time held 149 people but only fifteen survived to rescue. Shortly after their rescue five more die. The painting shows a makeshift raft with suffering man trying to stay alive. From what I read about this portrait in these times the 1400’s to 1500’s women don’t normally look directly at you and the artist would normally cut off the women’s body to show a close up of the face. The point of this portrait was to make Mona Lisa look as naturally as possible and show that wealth was not important. Apart from the naturalism in the figure, the painting includes a background. If you look over her shoulder to the left side, you see a road that leads to distance, and mountains painted as background. On the right side, we can see a bridge, and a road which leads to sea in the distance. “The contrast between the woman and the background landscape is therefore quite remarkable, and it lends to the power of the painting”.
