Part 1-Intellectual Standards 1. “According to Cromwell’s director of auxiliary services more that 90% of the logo merchandise is produced by Transterra Textiles…” -This example violates the Universal standards of Relevance and Significance. Why is the director of auxiliary services considered credible when speaking on the production of the school’s merchandise? Why is their opinion relevant? What significance does this fact have in the ultimate goal of changing the factory? To correct the problem the speaker should have gotten information from an administrator who purchases the merchandise from the textile factory, or omitted this entire statement.

2. “There are two things we can do to put an end to this exploitation. We can demand that Cromwell obtain its logo merchandise only from garment companies with socially responsible labor practices, and we can refuse to wear or purchase and Cromwell clothing until the college switches to an acceptable apparel supplier.” -This example violates the standards of Breadth and Logic. Being that all colleges are obtaining their logos from the same textile company, are the students even sure that another company could manufacture the logos? What other option could the school have? What will the workers do if they lose business and are forced to close? A more logical thing to do if they are going to protest would be to fight for the reform of the factory. This option, rather than shutting down, would keep a lot less workers out of work, the company gets better working conditions, and the school won’t lose money from sales of collegiate merchandise.

Fairness: Speaker talks about the “little girl…working hour after hour…trying not to collapse from the heat…” and that violates the fairness of the argument. He is trying to manipulate the audience by appealing to their emotional side. This argument is not based in factual evidence, and therefore, could be dismissed by the audience. There may not be a little girl in this exact situation described, and therefore, this statement is irrelevant. This could be corrected by leaving the entire story of the “little girl” out, or an interview of a child that works in the factory could be conducted giving a first-hand look into the conditions of the workplace. Breadth: The next violation is the breadth. The essay did not mention any interviews of the workers, nor opposing/alternate viewpoints of the supervisors. One of the first thing I noticed as a violation is the use of emotional manipulation. Countless times, the author would tried to appeals to the reader’s emotional side by putting focuses mainly on the story of the little girl and not providing any supports for the argument with any sort of statistics, interviews, or documents. You work long hours for barely any money. For my audience, being my instructor and fellow classmates, I would assume they know at least that much, more or less. ...It is no secret that sweatshops are horrible areas of employment. The prevalence of child labor, poor working conditions, and little pay has given sweatshops notoriety amongst the economic and political world. However, when placed in the context of the respective areas sweatshops reside in; sweatshops take on a much more favorable form. Sweatshops arise in poor areas around the world, and this actually plays a major factor when looking at the positive aspects of sweatshops. These aspects include a greater source of income than other local jobs, a better alternative mean of making money, and a positive impact upon women in poor countries. Sweatshops are infamous for providing low wages, but when analyzed in the context of other employment industries in countries where sweatshops are common, sweatshop wages are actually a steady source of income. For example, ninety percent of countries that contain sweatshops produce income that is larger than the overall average income of that respective country. In some cases, up to half of sweatshop countries yield earnings up to three times the national average (Powell). In terms of income, sweatshops allow a superior means of making money than other jobs.
