She's the Man to Prove Them Wrong

...Imagine that you were told that you weren’t good enough to continue on playing the sport that your world was revolved around because you were a girl. In the movie She’s the Man (2004), Viola Hastings is told just that. When the girls’ soccer team at her school is cut because of a lack of players, she is devastated. She seeks the help of the boys’ soccer coach, asking him to let them try out for the boy’s team. The coach laughs in their faces, saying “girls aren’t as fast as boys, or a strong, or as athletic. This is not me talking, it’s a scientific fact” (Fickman). Outraged, Viola does everything in her power to prove this, as well as many other stereotypes wrong. Viola, played by Amanda Bynes, disguises herself as her brother and try’s out for his schools’ boys’ team. “This transparently cross-dressed performance advances a distinctly conservative perspective on both gender identity and the human subject” (). She’s the Man uses a humorous approach to help viewers understand the gender roles of teenage life when Viola is able to break through the barriers of femininity versus masculinity, disproving stereotypes about romance, athletics, education, and beauty along the way. There are many different stereotypes of femininity and masculinity in the movie, but the main one focused on in the movie is romance and the different ways that each gender enacts the roles of their individual relationships. Main character Viola Hastings is in a relationship with Justin, who is a......

General Motors Bankruptcy 2009

...General Motors Bankruptcy 2009 “After years of losses, the troubled automaker is forced into bankruptcy. GM is set to close a dozen facilities and cut more than 20,000 jobs” (Isidore, 2009, para. 1). After the Second World War, General Motors (GM) conquered the American automotive market capturing 50.7% of its market niche in 1962 (Holstein, 2009). Whether GM was late introducing a new feature or design was irrelevant, Bob Lutz (cited in Holstein, 2009) was quoted as saying "we had such enormous power that we could always steamroller everybody else." In 2009 GM’s stock dropped below that of the minimum price required to trade in the New York stock market and closed at its lowest in 76 years at 37 cents (Sandler, Green & Ramsey, 2009). GM therefore was obligated to file for bankruptcy protection. The aim therefore of this paper is to do the following: * Review the General Motors bankruptcy that occurred during 2009. * Identify the type of bankruptcy and the decisions which went into the bankruptcy declaration. * Review how the creditors of GM and workers and related businesses at GM fared in the bankruptcy process and the positives and negatives of this bankruptcy making use of examples and * Discussing whether there is a moral hazard in allowing companies that make bad decisions to survive bankruptcy. Brief Review of GM’s Bankruptcy According to Business Week in 2005, the Chief Executive of GM G. Richard Wagoner Jr. decided to publish an......

Australian Acquisition Proves Rich Seam for Szln

...With the Australian mining industry particularly hard-hit by the international financial downturn, one enterprising Chinese business has managed to provide a lifeline for one ailing Perth-based metal mining company, whilst also establishing a bargain basement foothold in this hugely lucrative market. The deal came as Perilya Limited, a 22-year old base metal mining company, saw its market value slashed from $1billion in 2007 to a low of just $18 million when it announced its intention to seek new funding. Its value eventually rallied to $30 million, but, despite a raft of cutbacks and lay-offs, its future looked far from certain. Australian acquisition proves rich seam for SZLN Zhang Shuijian: "seeking additional foreign partners". Shenzhen Zhongjin Lingnan Nonfemet Co (SZLN), a Shenzen-headquartered State-owned mining business took the opportunity. Realizing the potential of the struggling Australian company, SZLN invested A$ 45 million (200 million yuan) into Perilya last February and acquired a 50.1 percent stake in the business. The deal marked the first time a Chinese metal company had acquired a controlling stake in an Australian mining business. Following the acquisition, SZLN is now China's largest zinc-lead producer. The company's president, Zhang Shuijian, sees the takeover as a hugely significant for SZLN and its "going global" initiative. Zhang is very much looking to the future with his company's new acquisition. In 2010 and 2012 Perilya's......

Nucor in 2009

...Title of the Case: Nucor in 2009 Time Context or Period: 1905-2009 of Nucor Summary of the Case: In 1905, Ransom E. Olds, creator of the Oldsmobile, had a dispute with stockholders and left his own company — Olds Motor Works. He soon formed REO Motor Company, which evolved into the Nuclear Corporation of America and ultimately, Nucor. In 1962, this was the year that Nuclear Corporation made two moves that would soon change the company and ultimately the American steel industry. First, they acquired a company called Vulcraft, an unassuming producer of steel joists and girders. Second, to run Vulcraft, they hired a man named Ken Iverson who would soon emerge as one of the great visionaries and mavericks in American industry. Barely staving off bankruptcy, Nuclear appointed Ken Iverson as its new president. He acted quickly to put the company on a course toward profitability including selling off inefficient divisions. Not long after we shed our conglomerate business model to become a highly focused steel producer, The board of directors elected to change the name of the company from Nuclear Corporation of America to simply Nucor. Since then, Nucor has contributed over 70 million dollars to Scholarships and Educational Disbursements. It is a source for millions of dollars for educational funding. To this day, every child of every Nucor teammate is entitled to educational funds from the company. Now, Nucor is one of the leading steel producers in the United States.......

Logic Cannot Prove the Existence of God

...statement, such as atheists like Hume who would argued that existence can’t be proved using reason as we need both observation and empirical evidence to prove God’s true existence. Others argue that faith doesn’t need logic in order to prove the existence of God, through believing in his existence he exists, alongside knowledge from revelation in the Bible. Kant argues that existence is not a predicate of God, it adds nothing to our knowledge of God, and so we cannot just assume that he exists. It is impossible to compare God to a perfect island, just because he appears to perfect does not mean we can assume he exists; applying logic to a being doesn’t bring it into existence. Others would argue that God’s existence is logically necessary. It could be argued that philosophers like Plato use logic and reason to prove God’s existence for example in the allegory of the cave. Anselm would have disagreed with this statement completely as he clearly thought that God could be proved by logic and reason alone. His ontological argument relies upon using logic as he deducted, he argues that God is, ‘than that which nothing greater can be conceived’ thereby if there is nothing greater than the most Supreme Being conceivable, the most Supreme Being must exist. Thus his entire argument is based upon the foundation of logic in order to prove God’s existence. Similarly Descartes would have also disagreed with this statement as he felt it was as logically necessary for God to exist in......

Walmart Spring 2009

...his success onto his replacement as president and CEO, Mike Duke, on February 1, 2009. Today, Wal-Mart has 7,800 stores and club locations in 14 different markets, employing more than 2 million associates, and serving more than 176 million customers a year. Wal-Mart is a public corporation that runs a chain of large department stores. Three business subsidiaries comprise Wal-Mart’s operations: Wal-Mart Stores, Sam’s Club, and Wal-Mart International. The nine retail formats of the company include “supercenters, food and drug stores, general merchandise stores, bodegas (small markets), cash and carry stores, membership warehouse clubs, apparel stores, soft discount stores and restaurants” (p. 17). Studies show that the customer base for discount retailers has been growing since early 2007, but bargain shoppers have especially flocked to discount retailers since the recession hit. Last year's increase in gasoline prices has also benefited retailers such as Wal-Mart who are known for their one-stop shopping. Recently, Wal-Mart announced the launch of Your Zone, a new home furnishings collection for teens, and reintroduced its new and improved Great Value private-label brand. Although Wal-Mart is known for selling national brands at unbeatable prices, its new store brand products will most likely prove to be more profitable for the company (Cheng, Retailers Try New Tricks Amid Global Downturn, 2009). In fact, 59% of consumers are now looking beyond traditional supermarkets to......

Nintendo Strategy in 2009

...Case study 1 – Nintendo Strategy in 2009 Strategic Management For Bachelor of Business (Hons) 1. What are the defining business and economic characteristics of the video game console industry? What is the industry like? The video games industry in essence has brought arcade video games to the home of the user. Firms involved in the games console industry design, manufacture and bring to the market a host of video games consoles and games software. The introduction of the video game console in the early eighties allowed users to play video games at home by connecting the console to the users TV as opposed to traditional coin operated video games machines found in arcade centers. This innovation allowed the video game console industry to grow as the size of the potential market increased. The industry has seen periods of growth and decline over these past few decades with record sales of $23.1 billion in 2008. External factors are those factors relating to and impacting on business growth over which a firm has no direct influence or control. Such factors affecting growth within the video games console industry include advances in technological factors. These relate to not only how the games console looks and performs (graphics and speed) but also in the processes and operations involved in bringing the console to market (R&D and value chain). Increasing internet availability and trends towards online gaming will also......
