Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Marriott International is a multinational hospitality company. It is a leading lodging company based in United States of America. The company was founded by J W Marriott in 1927, which is now headed by his son. Marriott International employs close to 200,000 employees. Marriott International boasts of 4087 properties spanning over 80 countries, with 697,000 rooms and another 197,000 in the making. The hotels or lodgings are either self operated or franchises. Throughout the 88 years of its operation, Marriott International has built a reputation of immeasurable quality, service excellence, integrity and being pioneers in innovation.

1.2 Objectives of the Study

The objective is to study the organizations structure, internal and external environment, carry out an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses, discovering new opportunities and finding out the threats faced by Marriott International. Furthermore, we would also be assessing whether the organizational structure implemented by the company is apt for today’s volatile, unpredictable and fast moving environment.

1.3 Scope of the study

In this report we intend to focus majorly on the organizational structure and the assessment of the internal and external environment. This report would not cover the competitor analsysis in depth and would be limited to the study on Marriott International as a whole. Moreover, we have not taken into account the different styles of operations carried out by the franchises at different parts of the world. Minor variations are seen in the working of the company at different geographical locations to suit the needs of those particular regions.

1.4 Limitation of the study

The data collected from the secondary sources for the making of this report is a year old. This limits the study in some ways…...

Cynicism Is On the Rise Research over indicates that cynicism is on the rise which affects society as well as business. This made his workers believe that he is endowed with exceptional abilities and their respect towards him grew over the years. However, three years before Jack’s retirement the company lost its innovative edge and as a result, its performance dramatically declined. Applying the Burke-Litwin model to this case study will identify and explain the effect that Jack’s charismatic leadership style (root cause) had on other organizational variables, and performance. The Burke-Litwin model is a framework for organizational analysis that outlines the complexity and interconnectedness of all organizational variables at play that ultimately affects the individual and organizational performance (see appendix A) (Burke & Litwin, 1992). Given the openness and interconnectedness of the framework, a change in any one of the variables will eventually impact the others (Burke & Litwin 1992; Katz & Kahn, 1978). ...1) Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory that was created by Abraham Maslow in which he states that the lower level of needs must be satisfied in order to proceed with the higher level of needs. His theory consist of five levels. It starts with physiological need, followed by the safety, social and esteem needs and ends with the self-actualization need. Based on this case study, the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs will be used to analyze Bob Wood. Using the physiological needs, Bob who is 30 years of age seems to have his basic needs satisfied. He has food, clothes to wear, a place to live and he drives an expensive sport car. Since these needs have been satisfied it no longer is a drive to push Bob to attain them anymore. Eventually once a person has had this level of need satisfied he/she moves to the next level. Despite having all his basic needs satisfied, Bob seems to be frustrated with his current job situation. As mentioned in the case study, Bob was making $80,000 a year plus bonus. Currently he only earns $44,000 as a technology analyst. That is almost half of what he used to earn back in 2001. Following the physiological needs is the safety needs. Bob’s current situation is very much tied to this level on the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
