Definitions
A
Amalgam- Amalgam is a substance formed by the reaction of mercury with another metal.
Aqueous- Aqueous means "In a solution of water". An Aqueous solution is a solution in which water is the solvent.
C
Colloid- A colloid is a substance dispersed evenly throughout another substance.
Concentrated- A large quantity of substance present in a unit amount of mixture.
D
Dilute- To dilute a liquid is to make it thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it.
E
Eutectic- Eutectic point is the lowest temperature at which the eutectic mixture can exist in liquid phase.
I
Immiscible- Not forming a homogeneous solution when 2 or more liquids are added together. Example, water and oil.
Insoluble- Matter that cannot be dissolved.
M
Miscible- When 2 liquids form a homogeneous mixture when added together.
N
Non-polar- A hydrophobic (water-hating) chemical group.
P
Polar- A hydrophilic (water-loving) chemical group.
Precipitate- The formation of a solid in a solution or inside another solid during a chemical reaction or by diffusion in a solid. E.g sedimentation or settling.
S
Saturated- Holding as much water or moisture as can be absorbed.
Solute- The minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
Solution- A homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances.
Solvent- The major component in a solution, the solute is dissolved in the solvent.
Suspension- A suspension is a heterogeneous fluid containing solid particles that are large for sedimentation.
Supersaturated- A solution that contains more of the dissolved material than could be dissolved by the solvent under normal circumstances.

...One of the major shortcomings of science supposedly is a lack of communication between scientists and the general public. Many argue that too often, science is only presented in written academic journals that are not so easily obtained by the general public. This is discussed on a daily basis and was argued in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as well as in on-going debate about other scientific theories and ideas. However, people fail to realize a few things. One of the major things is that, in terms of an earthquake or tsunami, you simply cannot predict anything like that. You cannot blame scientists for not being able to predict an earthquake like a meteorologist can predict weather events. Scientists can study things like seismic activity and they can make assumptions as to what may happen should an earthquake of a high magnitude hit and cause something catastrophic like a tsunami. Yet, some fail to realize that some safety measures were taken, and even inspectors that visited the Fukushima Nuclear power plant asked Japanese authorities to increase safety measures further. According to a France24 news article written three months after the catastrophe, “A three-page summary was issued at the end of the 18-member team’s May 24-June 2 inspector mission to Japan. It said the country underestimated the threat from tsunamis to the Fukushima plant and urged sweeping changes to its regulatory system. Japanese authorities have been criticised......

Jefferson Professor Cassie Prisco Introduction to Physical Science November 2, 2013 The specific challenges to making direct measurements in the fields of astronomy, chemistry, physics, or earth science are measuring global warming and climate changes, measuring how the earth rotates on its axis, and measuring the distance from the earth to the stars. Scientist have had these issues for a number of years but overcome using indirect forms to measure these challenges. For global warming, scientist used a 350-year record of precipitation in California determined by using 52 tree ring chronologies as proxies for precipitation. These methods were not 100% because there were no baselines to compare. In this day and time to obtain a temperature that represents a large area, it requires measurements of multiple locations. Chubb has made a series of recommendations to the federal government to increase focus on science, technology, engineering and maths skills. The strategy is partially aimed at addressing the declining number of students taking advanced maths in year 11 and 12, as well as the shortage of qualified maths and science teachers. Chubb said each primary school should have at least one specialist maths and science teacher, a policy currently used in South Australia and Victoria. This would be encouraged by improving incentives, including pay, for teachers. Other recommendations include supporting research potential, improving research collaboration with other countries and doing more to stress the importance of science to businesses and students. Introduction: I am trying to test the effect of ultraviolet rays from the Sun on the skin. The ultraviolet rays from the Sun cannot be seen with the eye, but can still hurt you. The Sun releases radiation, which is electromagnetic waves of infrared (IR) to ultraviolet rays (UV). The electromagnetic spectrum ranges from longer wavelengths (IR) to shorter wavelengths (UV). Ultraviolet rays are closer to the shorter wavelengths, and can go through layers of skin and harm our bodies. The two types of ultraviolet rays are UVA and UVB. UVA are long wavelengths that go through the many layers of the skin, and may cause cancer. UVB are shorter wavelengths, and do not go through the multiple layers of the skin, but can also cause skin cancer. Sunscreen helps protect the skin from these harmful rays. The higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of the sunscreen, the better protected your skin will be. The prediction is one of the beads with the sunscreen will work better than the other because of the SPF number. The higher the SPF sunscreen, the better it will work. It will block the ultraviolet rays from the Sun from going through multiple layers of your skin. The key stage I have chosen to examine is lower key stage two. Lower key stage two consists of children in Year 3 (aged 7-8) and Year 4 (8-9). The results showed that the shorter pendulum took less time to complete full 10 swings. The length and weight has no influence on the pendulum. 1.0 Introduction The Italian scientists Galilie Galileo (1564-1642) established experimentally that heavy objects fall at practically the same rate. It was obvious to this scientists that a feather and heavy stone did not fall at the same acceleration. But, heavy objects of different masses appeared to fall at a uniform acceleration. Galileo did not measure the magnitude of the acceleration of falling object. Instead, Galileo was able to compare the velocities of objects on ramps at different heights. But Galileo’s ramp investigations is believed to have been after his investigation of the movement of pendulums. This investigation aim to find out some relationships between three quantities by three experiments . The chief framework used to devalue public action in these cases is the technocratic model, wherein it is believed that decisions can be best made by objective, rational experts acting based upon scientific knowledge. In this case, we can see a perfect example of when a decision was decided by scientific experts, in accordance with the technocratic model. Fumento and other supporters of the technocratic mode privilege the scientific knowledge of bodies such as the Scientific Advisory Panel in this case over other forms of knowledge. He denounces NRDC as fanatics based on his claim that they acted in spite of, and in contradiction to scientific declarations and reports which indicated that their "Alar alarm" did not correspond to the evidence at hand (423). However, the Alar saga is typical of many regulatory decision-making processes in that the scientists and administrators were forced to act before scientific opinion has solidified around a certain determination of the dangers of the chemical. In this case, the scientists cannot simply rely on the accepted scientific verdict, but they need to make value judgements about what evidence and opinion to include in their decision-making and what to exclude. In this type of scenario, I will first argue, the technocratic model is imperfect for our democratic country, as it privileges the value judgements of scientists over those of the populace.
