Global Warming Debate

...Scientific concern about global warming is not new. A single scientific paper, published more than three decades ago, can place the discussions about climate change into historical perspective. Tomorrow it will be 35 years since the leading science journal Nature published a review paper entitled "Man-made carbon dioxide and the 'greenhouse' effect", by the eminent atmospheric scientist J. S. Sawyer, director of research at the United Kingdom Meteorological Office. In four pages, Sawyer summarized what was known about the role of carbon dioxide in enhancing the natural greenhouse effect leading to warming at the earth's surface, and made a remarkable 28-year prediction of the warming expected to the end of the 20th century. His prediction can now be compared with what has been observed. We can also compare his review of the science in the early 1970s with that in the latest (2007) assessment from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. After summarizing recent calculations of the likely impact of increasing carbon dioxide concentrations on global surface temperature, Sawyer concluded that the "increase of 25 per cent in carbon dioxide expected by the end of the century therefore corresponds to an increase of 0.6 degrees in world temperature - an amount somewhat greater than the climatic variations of recent centuries". Examination of the global surface temperature over the latter part of the 20th century shows that in fact the temperature rose about 0.5 degrees......

Fasb Barter Case

...Cases on Recognition Measurement The Barter Case "Will that be cash?" Ben Sawyer had started handcrafting replicas of antique furniture as a retirement hobby, but at the urging of friends he later opened a small shop to sell his products. It proved an immediate success, first with the "summer people" and then with dealers, several of whom encouraged Ben to supplement his line of small tables and bookcases with larger pieces. Ben decided to give it a try. After closing the shop for the winter, he worked in the basement of his home designing an impressive mahogany sideboard and building two of them by the shop's spring reopening. Materials costs (for wood) amounted to $700 for each; Ben's labor, priced at the going wage rate was $500 for each. No overhead costs were incurred. Although familiar with the market for casual "antique" furnishings, Ben was uncertain about an appropriate price for his sideboards. From a review of catalogues offering pieces mass-produced from cheaper woods, he concluded that a figure of $3,000 to $4,000 was about right for handcrafted mahogany. Accordingly, he priced each sideboard at $3,000 ("and I'm ready to haggle if somebody's ready to buy," he told Mrs. Sawyer). Within one week, Ben sold both sideboards with no haggling. He sold the first one on reopening day to Will Bascomb, a dealer he knew well. "Beautiful work, Ben," said Will. "I want it, but I'm going to be short of cash for a while. How about $1,000 down and the balance in......

Tom Sawyer

...John Hammond History 2010 Dr. Keith Krawczynski November 14, 2012 During the 19th century America was becoming a rapidly fast growing country, industrially and economically. It seemed as though things were on the right track, but there was a growing concern, regarding slavery, that had people questioning the southern region’s integrity and moral values. After all the years of slavery propaganda from the large planters more people started to realize that slavery was not a good thing after all. The planters argued that slavery was good for the African Americans because it gave them a chance to become more civilized, but people were beginning to think differently. Many people did not know what was actually happening on slave plantations. Novelists began publishing articles and books that described what they were seeing so that other people could get a sense of how the African Americans were really being treated. After slavery ended former slaves began telling their stories, and evidence was collected to validate what actually happened. The slaves wanted to let people know that their lives were not as simple as some people perceived it to be because being physically punished, abused, and owned by another human is far short of living a trouble free life. Some of the slaves did not mind being punished as long as they were given food, but others would have rather been poor than to be abused by their owners. Owners and non-slave owners wanted to instill fear in the......

...Reading report of the Adventure of Tom Sawyer I think that every young person used to have the dream of travelling around the world and trying to find the treasure, but most of them just hold it as a dream ,not take it into action. In the book The adventure of Tom Sawyer you can see a very exciting and mind-blowing story, which shows a young boy’s adventure life. It is one of the best-written novels of Mark Twain, which brings the fresh recollections of Mark Twain’s memory of his childhood. Tom Sawyer ,who is always causing mischief and troubles, but sets a new and original image which is totally different from the other children. Innacurate Resumes Case Study

...Sawyer Associates, like all businesses, has guidelines to follow when hiring new associates. Hiring a significant number of new employees at once puts a strain on the Personnel department. The Personnel department, which is responsible for hiring, must not disregard the Company's policies, regardless of how busy the department may or may not be. When policies are followed by the Personnel department employees, no unqualified candidates will make it past the interview phase. Background This case study identifies the issues with hiring new associates, associates being hired with inaccurate information on their resumes, and the Personnel department not following proper hiring policies. Everyone Is Tom Sawyer

...Everyone is Tom Sawyer ----A book review of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Tom Sawyer is a hero of everyone’s childhood. Mark Twain wrote a hero boy instead of a hero man. However, we can also find some adult’s words among what Tom said. It is very interesting and humorous when a little boy speaks in a way of adult. In this way, the great author wanted to give Tom some special characters that can made him different from the normal children and it is also a symbol of the adult’s world. In spite of the profound meanings that the novel revealed to the world, from the history of the little boy, we can easily find something similar when we were at his age. Tom will always give us vivid memories of our happy childhood. He will remind us what we once were ourselves how we felt and thought and talked what queer enterprise we sometimes engaged in. When I was a small little boy, just liking what Tom did, I was extremely curious about the small and strange world around me. My not-very-large-house meant a very-huge-mystery-castle to me. I always wanted to find some place that I could hide myself so safely that nobody could easily find me in a whole day’s searching. I skipped the school to catch some fish in the small pool near the school. I hated sleeping at noon so much that I locked myself in my room to escape the noon sleep. In my childhood there are so many adventures which deserve our cherishment. In Mark Twain’s perspective, there is always a mess in the world. The reality is......

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

...The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Truth and Tom Sawyer “The road to truth is long, and lined the whole way with annoying bastards.” Alexander Jablokov The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, has many themes; one theme is the importance of truth in society. A Society is inevitable. It will always be there as a pleasure and a burden. Society expects, or perhaps demands, certain behavior from the individual. If one wishes to enjoy the pleasures of society then one must play by society’s rules. Tom Sawyer, THE MAIN CHARACTER, is an imaginative young man who sometimes allows his imagination and high-spirit TO get in the way of telling the truth. Tom is very adventurous; he never passes up a chance to play pirates, robbers, or soldiers. We are introduced to Tom, when he is climbing in his window after a long night of cavorting with his friends. Soon after this, Tom meets Huckleberry Fin. Huck is a social outcast who likes to live by his own terms. Tom and Huck become good friends. The boys watched as Injun Joe kills the doctor and frames a drunk by the name of Muff Potter, who happens to be IN the wrong place at the wrong time. The boys swear never to speak of THE MURDER again. Later, Tom falls in love with his new neighbor, Becky Thatcher. Eventually the two become engaged, but the engagement falls through when Tom......

Literature

...My friend Eddie was a small, thin boy. You could see the blue veins in his wrists and temples. People said that he had consumption and wasn't long for this world. I loved, but sometimes despised him. His father, Mr Sawyer, was a strange man. Nobody could make out what he was doing in our part of the world at all. He was not a planter or a doctor or a lawyer or a banker. He didn't keep a store. He wasn't a schoolmaster or a government official. He wasn't — that was the point — a gentleman. We had several resident romantics who had fallen in love with the moon on the Caribees — they were all gentlemen and quite unlike Mr Sawyer who hadn't an 'h' in his composition. Besides, he detested the moon and everything else about the Caribbean and he didn't mind telling you so. He was agent for a small steamship line which in those days linked up Venezuela and Trinidad with the smaller islands, but he couldn't make much out of that. He must have a private income, people decided, but they never decided why he had chosen to settle in a place he didn't like and to marry a coloured woman. Though a decent, respectable, nicely educated coloured woman, mind you. Mrs Sawyer must have been very pretty once but, what with one thing and another, that was in days gone by. When Mr Sawyer was drunk — this often happened — he used to be very rude to her. She never answered him. 'Look at the nigger showing off,' he would say; and she would smile as if she knew she ought to see the joke but......
