Federal Express – delivering the goods
Kevan Scholes

This case study looks at how new business models can create vast improvements in competitiveness.
However, the models must be suited to the business environment at the time and will have a ‘shelf-life’ as the business environment changes. The case study looks at one on the world’s most successful adopters of a new business model that transformed the airfreight and package delivery sectors worldwide. But the advent of the internet in the mid-1990s meant that the FedEx business model had to change or the company would decline. This is also the story of how it rose to that challenge. l l l

In 1965, Yale University undergraduate Frederick
W. Smith wrote a term paper about the passenger route systems used by most airfreight shippers, which he viewed as economically inadequate.
Smith wrote of the need for shippers to have a system designed specifically for airfreight that could accommodate time-sensitive shipments such as medicines, computer parts and electronics.
In August of 1971 following a stint in the military, Smith bought a controlling interest in
Arkansas Aviation Sales, located in Little Rock.
While operating his new firm, Smith identified the tremendous difficulty in getting packages and other airfreight delivered within one to two days. This dilemma motivated him to undertake research on how to resolve the inefficient distribution system.
In an interview with Fortune Small Business in 2002 he explained his business model for solving the problem: My solution was to create a delivery system that operates essentially like a bank-clearing system does. Put all points on a network and connect them through a central hub. If you take any individual transaction, that kind of system seems absurd – it means making at least one extra stop. But if you look at the network as a whole, it’s…...

...REFLECTIVE JOURNAL On the last day of discussion and reporting, the trends and issues concerning nursing, both in education and practice, was tackled. In nursing education, the enrollees decreased this year. An online education is now being offered especially to those working in different countries and who don’t have time to enter the school because of his/her works in a hospital institution. A lot of different specialization in nursing had come to practice. There were only few nurses working in hospitals. Most nurses are now working in nursing homes. A rise in home health care has also been happening. These were the trends in nursing practice nowadays. Currently here in the Philippines, a lot of nursing schools had opened. There had been a lot of nursing graduates and board passers. However, the job opportunities waiting for the new nurses had not increased. As a result to this, there was an oversupply of nurses in our country. A lot of people took up the course of nursing for the reason and hope to work outside the country and give their family a better future. This reason should be eradicated or lessened. Our main reason should be to help the sick and in need. Nurses care for the life of a people which is a very vital thing. Nowadays, the hiring of nurses outside the country had been lessened because of the economy problem in the United States wherein it also affects a lot of countries. However, there are still countries open for hiring of nurses but most are......

...January of 1998, Federal Express changed to FDX Corporation. FDX Corporation now includes Federal Express, Roadway Packaging System (RPS), Viking Freight, Roberts Express, and Caliber Logistics. Even though FDX owns all these companies, Federal Express still remains independent. FDX’s strategy is to corroborate on selling and synergies for all FDX companies, but run operations separately and keep each company’s strengths and markets separate. Therefore, some information will be about FDX, but most will be for Federal Express as its own company. For example, Frederick Smith, the founder of Federal Express, is now the Chief Executive Officer of FDX. Federal Express’ CEO is currently Theodore Weise. Mission Statement The Mission Statement of FDX is "to produce superior financial returns for stockholders, by providing high value-added logistics, transportation and related information services through focused operating companies". This mission statement shows that FDX has a clear focus. (1) The main focus is to bring returns to stockholders. (2) They will emphasize adding value above and beyond just their service of transporting an object from one place to another. (3) Their focus of operations will be logistics, transportation, and related information. This mission statement is focused enough to keep FDX from diversifying into for example, food products; yet vague enough to allow growth in all of those areas. Philosophy FDX and Federal Express, in particular hold a......

...various strategic options and opportunities as they relate to the FedEx Corporation (FDX) in their current industry market. Competition will be assessed to create an understanding of the current landscape of the industry from the perspective of traditional, potential, and oblique competitors in FDX’s current industry. FDX will then be analyzed utilizing the SWOT model that will be utilized to identify three strategic options in the current market that will foster corporate growth in the future. Once identified, each strategic option will be evaluated via three criteria based on three simple questions as follows: Is it big? Is it us? Is it time? After this evaluation is complete there will be one strategic option selected that best meets the selection criteria in totality. FedEx Corporation: The Competition Competition in the transportation market is intense both domestically and globally and is the heart of every organizations strategy within this industry. Freight and courier services are at a high demand throughout the world due to growing distribution channels, technology, and a marked increase in demand. Market volume and value are projected to achieve growth of over thirty three percent by 2017 and will further raise the level of competition, rivalry, and fragmentation in this industry (Marketline, 2013, p. 27). FDX, an industry leader, maintains a pointed focus in providing comprehensive......

...9 9 Chapter9 Answers to Evennumbered Exercises 9 1. 2. What are two ways you can execute a shell script when you do not have execute access permission to the file containing the script? Can you execute a shell script if you do not have read access permission? You can give the name of the file containing the script as an argument to the shell (for example, sh scriptfile, where scriptfile is the name of the file containing the script). Under bash you can give the following command: $ . scriptfile Because the shell must read the commands from the file containing a shell script before it can execute the commands, you must have read permission for the file in order to execute the shell script. 3. 4. Assume that you have made the following assignment: $ person=jenny Give the output of each of the following commands: a. echo $person jenny b. echo '$person' $person c. echo "$person" jenny 5. 1 2 Chapter 9 6. Memo on Ups Cost of Capital

...defaulted on its bonds when it declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004. AAWW’s corporate bond rating is assumed to be a “B” based on the interest rates that it is paying on the rest of its debt. UPS is lower than FDX, which is reflective of UPS having a higher credit rating, which leads to a lower interest rate on its bonds. I would use the DCF approach because it reflects the dividend that is paid, which is a direct cost to the company. II. Cost of Preferred Stock None of the firms have preferred stock outstanding, so this section is inapplicable. III. Cost of Debt The cost of debt for the firms is strongly affected by the credit ratings of the firms. Because AAWW has a low credit rating (probably due to its recent bankruptcy), it must pay a higher interest rate. Interestingly, AAWW also pays a slightly higher tax rate, which may be reflective of its headquarters and where it is doing most of its business, which is primarily into and out of military bases domestically and abroad. FDX’s cost of debt is half that of AAWW and UPS’s cost of debt is even lower, reflective of both their higher credit ratings and their lower taxes. IV. WACC The WACC is dramatically different between the three firms. UPS has a WACC that is just over one third of what AAWW pays. FDX is between the other two, but is still far lower than AAWW. These numbers reflect the differences in credit ratings between the three firms. UPS exploits the advantage that it has by leveraging......

...ENGL 1312 26 November 2014 Reflective Essay The one skill that I can take away from this class and apply it to others is my newfound ability to prepare research for any subject or discipline. I can truly say that I have learned general research techniques and can apply these academic disciplines for my personal use as well as on the job. My ability to incorporate information from sources has been reinforced by concepts that were taught in Composition 1. For the “Majors Essay” I selected a topic of interest for myself and conducted research. My focus in the past for writing papers was generally gathering as much information as possible from the web. For this assignment I had to learn new techniques that were necessary for researching topics in a real library. I felt the assignment was presented with enough information to form an outline and begin writing. The difficulty for me was remembering the five-part essay format that was learned in freshman comp and structuring my introduction. Writing an annotated bibliography was a process that allowed me to explore the methods that scholars use to organize and record information that will be used in their projects. I learned better ways of note taking as well as summarizing. Learning how to understand and evaluate sources and identifying what is needed is a skill I can carry wherever I go. Improving on an assignment like this would be very hard for me to comment on since this was the first time I have ever done......

This article explains the many different impacts of climate change that effect individuals, species important point stated is that a study has resulted that about 6300 species have a great possibility of disappearing due to extinction (Celine et al. 2012). Letters: Nematode from the terrestrial deep subsurface of South Africa. One point in which I felt increased my knowledge to this topic understands the difference between Halicephalobus and H.mephisto, even though they have a morphologically minimalistic gene they are different due to their long spotted tail (Borgonie et al. 2011). How Many Species Are There on Earth and in the Ocean. An eye catching point in the paper is the technique used to estimate how many species exist on earth. They applied the lengthy process to all eukaryote kingdoms and predicted that there is 8.74 million species of eukaryotes that exist on earth (Camilo et al. 2011). Nature geosciences: Sinking deltas due to human activities This paper began with a very interesting fact to the article stating that about half a billion people in the world are living near or even on the deltas. This is concerning as I was then lead to read that a number of early in indicators have stated that the occurrence of hurricanes and cyclones have high chance of increasing (James et al. 2009) . The politics of climate change This paper was quite...

...Reflective Essay #1 1. My subordinates would describe me as a “down to earth” type of leader. When it comes to being supportive, they know I will do what it takes to ensure they have everything they need to complete the job. They also know i care about not overwhelming them. If they need time off work for personal issues, I provide that. If they do good work, I reward them by giving them time off of work. Also, if they have any questions or need training, they know I will do my best to accommodate whatever they need. 2. My supervisor would describe my follower-ship by saying that I do what is required to complete the task at hand. They would mention my willingness to switch shifts with no complaints and my devotion to stay at work on my own time to ensure turnover is smooth. 3. My leadership style is the True Leader style. We have other leaders in our section that are more Authoritarian and I hear the complaints from the subordinates. I also personally see the difference on how my style and their style affects the workplace. I feel my style is highly effective because people are more willing to work and show initiative working on my shift, whereas on the other leader’s shift, they get frustrated and feel overworked. 4. To describe myself as a NCO, I think the best word to use would be fair. I’m open to input from subordinates, give them opportunities to make their own decisions so they feel involved, and try my best to make sure everyone has their......

Sliding Filament Thory, with Ref to Upper Arm.

...Norah Carr Co-ordination and movement Lo3. March 2012. 3:1 eplain the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction with reference to the antagonistic muscles of the upper arm. 3:2. Draw and label a diagram of a synovial joint, explaining the functions of each structure. 3:3. Distinguish between a hinge, pivot and a ball and socket joint with reference to named examples, shapes of bones and the ranges of movement possible. To understand the sliding filament theory, one should first look at the muscles. All movement through the body is created and stopped by muscles. Muscles work in antagonistic pairs, that means that when one muscle relaxes, it antagonistic pair will contract and vice versa. Muscle fibres are found in bundles wasting very little space. The muscle fibres which have bunches of myofibrils, which house myofilaments within.(thick myosin and thin actin filaments). Once the brain decides it wants to contract a muscle, it sends a series of electrical impulses via chemical reactions called Action potentials, down to motor neurons which innervate muscle fibres. through a process called 'lateral inhibition' the brain will send an exictatory (contract) signal to one motor neuron and an inhibitory (relax) signal to the other. Once the 'signal' (action potential) reaches the muscle fibre a series of events takes place, and very quickly: The Action potential travels along the axon of the motor neuron to the synaptic end bulb. This is an area of the......
