The controversies of Machiavelli

Is being good all the time a bad thing? Machiavelli believed it was. He writes, “A man who wishes to make a vocation of being good at all times will come to ruin among so many who are not good”. It seems like a fair statement to me; being good among those not good may lead us to ruins. The more power we posses, the more difficult it will be to remain good. Not all agree . Lao Tzu would probably respond with an observation like, "therefore the master says let go of all desire for common good, and good becomes common as grass" (A World of Ideas pg. 211 verse 37). Unlike Machiavelli, Lao-Tzu believed in individual importance. His rhetoric is based on simplicity, patience and compassion. On the other hand, Machiavellis ideology is based on any means necessary. Today, evidence of Machiavelli's statement is everywhere. Politicians are known to be crooked, they'll promise anything it takes to get elected and once in power make up new agendas. Others have lied in order to make action available. For example, on may 29,2003 president George W Bush reported, "we found the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq" he also reported, "we found biological laboratories". These false claims were the primary argument for a war that claimed the lives of about 5,000 coalition soldiers and nearly a half a million Iraqi's. (Associated press AP)(MSNBC)(CIA) report, “no weapons of mass destruction were found”. The only way for…...

...human body, a master cell of some sort. Stems cell, also have the potential be the backbone of many medical breakthroughs in centuries to come, from age prevention to helping with disabilities such as blindness, inability to walk, etc... As mention earlier in this paper there are many types of stem cells, but for purpose of this paper I shall focus on adult & embryonic stem cells. An adult stem cell is an undifferentiated cell that is found amongst differentiated cells in an organ or tissue that processes the ability to renew itself, as well as differentiate into other specialized cell types. By their nature, adult stem cells aren’t as controversial as embryonic stem cells because of the way in which they can be harvested – adult stem cells are collected from an individual’s skin cells and bone marrow cell – (Lanza, 2011). Embryonic stem cells on the other hand have been the focus of government scrutiny with the passing of legislation specific to the research on these types of stem cells. On February 1, 1961 Toronto scientist Drs. Jamis Till and Ernest McCulloch published their work on the potential benefits of the use of stem cells with the treatment of cancer patients. That discovery started an increase in reaserch of stem cells which caused congress to put a ban on all federally funded fetal tissues – fetal(baby at 10 weeks) tissues is where fetal stem cells are collected from – research. That jumpstarted the United States legislation on the stem cell research, ever......

...Communication and collaboration strategy Paul Obert Gen200 May-5, 2010 Sally Walters Communication and collaboration strategy In today’s ever accelerating pace, Communication and Collaboration are two of the major keys to a successful team. Within these skills are the need to recognize the abilities, strengths and weaknesses of others such as learning styles and personality types of which we shall touch on briefly in this writing. Team A, of which I am a proud member, is our example victim for this discussion. According to our team charter rough draft we have three members who show strong Interpersonal learning style traits, and coincidently show the same lack of strength in the Musical style. Team A also has a member who shows strong tendencies toward the Visual-Spatial learning style and weaker Logical-Mathematical traits. Now that we know some of our learning styles we need to identify our Personality types. The team divided unevenly again having three Organizers and one Adventurer. For grading purposes I will add a thinker to the group. In order to put these styles and types together we need to know the basic characteristics of them. The learning style basic traits are, Interpersonal * Seeing things from others perspective. * Cooperating within a group. * Communicating verbally and nonverbally. * Creating and maintaining relationships. Visual-Spatial * Perceiving and forming objects accurately. * Recognizing relationships......

...Juan Perez English 7-8 10 November 2013 A Quantum Leap in Weaponry Philosopher Jean Baudrillard once said, “Deep down, the United States, with its space and technological refinement, its bluff good conscience, even in those spaces which it opens up for simulation, is the only remaining primitive society.” No matter how much we advance technologically we will always depend on our primitive instincts. Since the beginning of humanity people have been fighting with each other. As humans evolved so did the weapons that were used. Humans have gone from throwing stones at their enemies to sending missiles half way across the globe. As our technology advances, the innovations get applied to our weapons systems, which in turn make them more efficient and effective. Since the beginning of time, man has had a necessity to accomplish things, some things were simpler than others. When things got difficult man figured out how to use whatever he could find to help accomplish his goals. These items were later known as tools. Primitive tools were made out of wood, bone, and stone (Smithsonian 15). These were the most common materials at the time. However when the time came to defend ourselves these tools became weapons. At first weapons were jagged pieces of materials, such as pieces of broken bone, broken wood and jagged rocks. These tools were held in the palm of the hand (Smithsonian 18). Eventually the tools were shaped and tied to make handling more efficient, as well as to eliminate...

...deinking Paper recycling processes can use either chemical or mechanical pulp. By mixing with water and applying mechanical action the hydrogen bonds in the paper can be broken and fibres separated again. Most recycled paper contains a proportion of virgin fibre in the interests of quality. Generally deinked pulp is of the same quality or lower than the collected paper it was made from. There are three main classifications of recycled fibre:. Mill Broke or Internal Mill Waste – this incorporates any substandard or grade-change paper made within the paper mill which then goes back into the manufacturing system to be re-pulped back into paper. Such out-of-specification paper is not sold and is therefore often not classified as genuine reclaimed recycled fibre. However, most paper mills have been recycling their own waste fibre for many years, long before recycling become popular. Preconsumer Waste – this is offcuts and processing waste, such as guillotine trims and envelope blank waste. This waste is generated outside the paper mill and could potentially go to landfill, and is a genuine recycled fibre source. Also includes de-inked preconsumer (recycled material that has been printed but did not reach its intended end use, such as waste from printers and unsold publications).[7] Postconsumer waste – this is fibre from paper which has been used for its intended end use and would include office waste, magazine papers and newsprint. As the vast majority of this paper has......

...When I read “A Hologram for the King”, I noticed different aspects that I would like to develop. In my opinion, this book is about much more than just the decay of American business. It’s about the life of a poor man who tries to deal with his difficult situation. So before beginning, let’s have a short summary. Alan Clay, an ex-consultant and a victim of the Recession, is now a 54-years-old business man hired by Reliant in order to present a new technology, a holographic teleconference system, to the King Abdullah. By landing this contact, he would solve all his money problems as he is a debt?ridden man. Across the book and the wait for the king to come, Alan remembers his past and wonders about his purpose in the life. First of all, in my opinion, this story is about the nothingness both physical and psychological. On one hand, we can talk about a real physical desert because the whole story takes place in Saudi Arabia, which is not known for its luxury forests but for its small shrubs which don’t need a lot of water. More particularly, the story takes place in King Abdullah Economic City which, according to the book, comprises only three buildings. For a city-to-be, it’s a kind of desert. “The landscape was flat and blank. Anything built here, an unrelenting desert, was an act of sheer will imposed on territory unsuited for habitation.” (A Hologram for the King, p34) “They drove a mile before they arrived at a modest gate, a pair of stone arches over the road, a great......

...social work practice 1. Introduction In a day when evidence-based practice has become so important to the social work profession, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has become one of the most frequently used forms of psychotherapeutic intervention. Extensive research supports the effectiveness of CBT approaches for a wide range of psychosocial issues (Dobson & Dobson, 2009; Granvold, 2011). It is one of the most widely researched and published models of therapy, with more than 325 published outcome studies that validate its efficacy (Butler, Chapman, Forman, & A. Beck, 2006). This empirical validation has made CBT a popular choice for social work practitioners seeking evidence-based treatments. For the purpose of this paper we use CBT as a generic term that encompasses theoretical and practice approaches that emphasize that a person’s thinking is the prime determinant of emotional and behavioral responses to life events (A. Beck, 1976; Ellis, 1994; Meichenbaum, 1993). Although there may be subtle differences among the various CBT approaches, Dobson and Dobson (2009) identify three basic assumptions that underscore most CBT approaches: (1) cognitive processes and content are accessible and can be known; (2) our thoughts and beliefs mediate the way we process information and consequently affect our emotional and behavioral responses; and (3) maladaptive cognitions can be intentionally targeted and changed in a more rational and realistic......

...Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 SE584: Forensic and Business Investigations Techniques February 22, 2009 The passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) changed how accounting is practiced and how corporations handle their accounting departments, to include auditing and internal controls. Some of these changes are for better accountability and some are for governing the application of stricter rules. The accounting profession was dramatically affected by the events leading up to and after the passing of this law. In the days before SOX, there were many high valued fraudulent activities. The news was flooded with employees, managers, and executives who were committing fraud against their investors, their organizations, or both. Millions and billions of dollars were being lost. The acts that brought about SOX began many years before its inception but were especially prevalent during the dot-com boom. These company’s executives fraudulently reported increases in revenue dollars, bringing their net income up in order to keep pace with their growth projected by analysts. The collapse of these “fast and furious” companies did not mean the last of the major fraudulent activities by executives against organizations or their investors. The 1990s was a time that saw many changes affecting business. The Internet was beginning to open more to commercial use, no more was it just for academics and the government. The age of technology that had started in the 1960s truly took off.......
