1. Bureaucracy
DEFINITION OF 'BUREAUCRACY'
An administrative or social system that relies on a set of rules and procedures, separation of functions and a hierarchical structure in implementing controls over an organization, government or social system. Large administrative staffs are most common in large organizations that need standardized rules and procedures or consistency across a wide range of business activities.

Although some form of bureaucracy is necessary for large, efficiently run organizations, there is much debate over whether the theory is ever manifested in practice. The term is often used in a pejorative way, since many bureaucracies become too large to be efficient, and become dysfunctional as a result. Some form of bureaucracy is necessary, however, in firms that are subject to heavy regulatory scrutiny, since a loss of policy or oversight control could have dire consequences.

It is a widely held belief that small companies can be more efficient because they do not need large bureaucracies and therefore can adapt and innovate very quickly. Large bureaucracies are also associated with more mature companies in mature industries nearing the end of their life cycles.

The organizational culture may also have negative and positive aspects. Hofstede (1980) looked for global differences between over 100,000 of IBM's employees in 50 different countries and three regions of the world, in an attempt to find aspects of culture that might influence business behavior. He suggested about cultural differences existing in regions and nations, and the importance of international awareness and multiculturalism for the own cultural introspection. Cultural differences reflect differences in thinking and social action, and even in "mental programs", a term Hofstede uses for predictable behaviour. Hofstede relates culture to ethnic and regional groups, but also organizations, profession, family, to society and subcultural groups, national political systems and legislation, Daniel Denison’s model (1990) asserts that organizational culture can be described by four general dimensions – Mission, Adaptability, Involvement and Consistency. Values represent the “guiding principles in the life of a person or other social entity” (Glew 2009 p.671). Values can be individual and group wide but they may not signify the same beliefs. This is an issue that can deeply affect the structure and strength of a team as complications arise when there are different values directing everyone’s behaviour. When beginning a team, individual values must be communicated and understood group wide, this is to minimise conflict through misperceptions, discrimination, barriers, and to also broaden the team’s beliefs and awareness. The structure of an organization will dictate how people interact with each other and their relationship of roles in the organization. If a structure is out-dated or not implemented correctly in a business, it will lead to many problems. These include conflict among employees or departments, confusion of employee roles, and lack of communication / coordination among departments. ...I was working with a child who began to display disruptive and anti-social behaviours randomly lashing out physically and verbally. To begin with I wanted to understand where this behaviour was stemming from, so I approached the child's parents in private to discuss my concerns. Initially the parents were not receptive of the fact that their child was in need of additional support and informed me that they were not concerned with their child's behaviour. They attributed the behaviour to 'boys being boys'. I persisted, taking detailed observations of the concerning behaviours exhibited by the child and used this as evidence to prove my case. I scheduled numerous meetings with the family around their availability, many outside of regular work hours. By being patient, respectful, understanding, genuine and sincere in all my interactions I was finally able to breakthrough and gain the families trust. Having gained their trust the parents confided in me that they were going through a separation due to some issues, working collaboratively we were than able to come to an agreement that the child’s wellbeing was in jeopardy and some support measures needed to be implemented. With open and honest communication we were able to devise a working action plan. Over the following weeks we took detailed observations of the strategies, changes and how effective they were.
