New Product Development

...NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT This means the development of original products, product improvements, product modification and new brands through the firm’s own research and development efforts. Give the rapid changes in consumer tastes, technology and competition; companies development a steady stream of new products and services. A company can obtain new products in two ways: Acquisition – to buy a whole company, a patent or a license to produce someone else’s products New product development – through the company’s research and development department. Why new products can fail: ▪ The market size may be overwhelmed even if the idea is good. ▪ The actual product was not designed as well as it should have been. ▪ It is incorrectly positioned in the market, priced too high or advertised poorly. ▪ A high level executive might push a favourite idea despite poor marketing research findings. ▪ Costs of development are higher than expected. ▪ The competitors might at times fight back harder than expected. The new product development process involves these major steps: 1) Idea Generation Idea generation means the systematic search of new product ideas. A well known management consultant said, ‘for every 1000 ideas, only 100 ideas will have enough commercial promise to merit a small-scale experiment, only 10 of these will warrant substantial financial commitment and of these only a couple will turn out to be qualified success.’ Major......

...The “P” in SCAMPER refers to refers to “put to other uses” meaning how to put the current solution, product, or process to other purposes or uses, or what to reuse from somewhere else to solve the problem at hand. One classical manifestation of putting to other use is finding an alternative market for a product when one market dries up, or seeking a new client when the contract with one client terminates. Typical questions in brainstorming to this effect include: What are the other markets for a product? What other outputs can this process generate? Where else can this process find deployment? Who else can use this product or service, and for what purpose? How many different ways does this product find use? Will this product work in other places? Who else finds this product useful? How to enhance the value of the product without changing the intended use? Are there completely different uses for any product?  Some manufacturers have figured out that there are multiple uses and have built advertising campaigns around these “non-traditional” uses.  WD-40 and duct tape have web sites devoted to the myriad “other uses” for their products.  One of the large soft drink manufacturers has sponsored a cook-off for recipes that use their product as an ingredient. WD 40 The best product featuring “put to other use” from creativity tool SCAMPER in today’s world would be WD 40 that not only showcases a few uses but has a huge list of varied uses. Known as "the can with......

...differentiated product from competitors. They will be able to create competitive advantage in the battery power and duration by using cutting edge technology to develop greater battery power and efficiency. As a customer oriented company, Yamaha provides exceptional after-sales support and technical support for its customers as well as, improved performance and vehicle quality. The Chevy Volt gives 38 miles per gallon on electric power after which, it switches to gasoline range extender. The new battery pack upgrade gives at least 40 miles per gallon as of 2015. Volt is recharged on 120-volt power overnight- 10-16 hours. It uses the Lithium Ion battery with 17.1kWh. The way that Yamaha can differentiate with this feature is to partner with a third party expert and obtain a patent for solar panel technology that would be installed in the roof of the car. By doing this, it would allow for solar recharging throughout the day. In keeping with the ongoing changes in people’s way of life, there is a need for innovation. Innovation refers to the process which ideas are transformed into new offerings, including products, services, processes, and branding concepts that will help firms grow (Grew & Levy, 2015, p. 255 - 256). In the absences of innovation, there will not be changes in consumer’s way of life. ...a viable concept: * The evolutionary idea derives from somewhere else, taking something that already exists and improves on it. (1) * Symbiotic: method of idea creation when multiple ideas are combined, using different elements of each to make a whole. (1) * Computer-assisted discovery: uses a computer in order to widen possibilities of research and numeric possibilities. (1) 2. Of the many methods for ideation offered in contemporary literature, which represents the best for CB in this situation, and why? The first and most important will be the evolutionary idea because Chocoberry should market chocolate products with basic health claims for the United States’ retail consumer market. They already make the base and distribute it so it is a great idea to get into that market. After using the evolutionary method I would recommend using the computer-assisted discovery as a method of crowdsourcing that can give ideas that the customer need/wants. These products are being developed by the technical departments as bar goods, such as one ounce or larger molded slabs of chocolate in dark, milk, inclusion-containing (nuts, fruit, etc.) products. 3. Who might be selected to perform the ideation, and why? Why might you not select certain groups to perform the ideation? To perform the ideation all group should be together to brainstorm and concept screening. In the Chocoberry Company, the new product development team and the manufacturing team must be......

The New Product

...The New Product 2 Introduction There are so many electronics due to the technology age and today they continue to keep coming. Here in the United States we have so many choices of stores to get the equipment we want. The best store in my opinion is Best Buy due to the convenience, choice of goods, and customer service. This is not by chance as they have been around for a good amount of time and are well known. There are different performance measures that indicate how well a store like this operates and will continue to operate. The following discussion will show how the degree of operating leverage, return on investment (ROI), economic value added (EVA), and inventory turnover ratio is computed. You will also see how the store finished up for the 2012 fiscal year. Degree of Operating Leverage and ROI You must first know what the definition of the degree of operating leverage and ROI is before you can actually begin to know how to compute them. “The degree of operating leverage defined is a type of leverage ratio summarizing the effect a particular amount of operating leverage has on a company's earnings before interest and taxes” according to Investopedia (2012). A return on investment also defined by Investopedia (2012) “is a performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments”. Table 3-1 will......
