The Military Draft

The United States has not used the Military Draft since it ended in 1973. Over the last five years, there have been proposals to reinstate the draft. We have had an all volunteer Military for three decades and have endured three conflicts in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Under the draft twenty years ago the Military services were smaller yet today with the volunteer Military has met their enlistment quota to date. Even with this information, I personally feel that the Military Draft should be reinstated for many reasons. Largely in part that we will ensure to have forces to defend our great country. There is not a lot of support for the draft to be reinstated from the American public. Many feel that it is not right to put their sons and daughter in harms way in Iraq or Afghanistan by drafting them. They actually believe that our all volunteer military can meet recruitment goals and that other countries cannot defeat ours. James Jay Carafano, Ph.D. said that “returning to the draft represents a failure of democracy, not a means to ensure its future” (par. 13). The majority of Congress does not support reinstating the draft and believe that our military services should remain all volunteers. Retired General Robert Scales commented that soldiers that are drafted are more likely to be killed in action than long-service professionals (Time, par. 10). Reinstating the draft now, would cause more young men and women to dodge the draft than ever before. Most people believe that joining the military should be a decision that an individual makes on their own, not something they are…...

...Marcelino I. Lake Self-Evaluation Paper PHI 210 Prof. Davenport 11/26/2011 “Should high school graduates receive free education for mandatory military service?” My topic is should high school graduates received free education based on two or four of military service? Some people believe all high school graduates should be required to serve a minimum of two years in any branch of the military. All veterans should receive some sort of educational assistance. Their educational benefits should be based on years of service, job duties and if they were in a combat zone or participated in an area were combat was imminent but war wasn’t declared. Some people believe in freedom of choice and individuals shouldn’t be forced to join the armed services if they don’t wish to. Some veterans don’t feel free education shouldn’t be contingent on mandatory service; others see no problem with it especially in today current climate. I believe all high school graduates......

Shui Fabrics: Critical Analysis of a Global Problem

...dimensions (Daft, 2012). I will also show problems that arose by not understanding the different cultures between the U.S. and China. It will also show the importance of learning the cultural values of other countries. I also will be doing an “Experimental Exercise” that focuses on my strengths and weaknesses and my potential to deal effectively with different cultures. Problems This case analysis is about Shui Fabrics and some of the problems that were faced between the Chinese culture and American culture. Chiu Wai, the Chinese deputy general manager, felt that with the company employing close to 3,000 employees it was making a contribution to the economy when the unemployment rate was around 20 percent. Paul Danvers, the U.S. Company’s president, felt that with labor cost being reduced that they could incorporate some sophisticated technology and reduce that workforce. He felt that they should not have as many workers as they would in a comparable U.S. plant (Daft, 2012). Wai also saw the 5 percent profit for the previous three years as promising, it showed the local authorities that they were not trying to exploit the Chinese workers which is how they viewed profits made on Chinese soil (Daft, 2012). Danvers felt differently he felt that the 5 percent profit was pathetic and should have been at more than 20 percent. These problems were viewed differently between the Chinese and Americans due to the differences in corporate culture, economic, and political conditions......

Leader's Self - Insight's

...INSIGHT’S due to the leader traits and behavior (Daft, 2011, p. 57). The T-P Leadership Questionnaire is an assessment style use by the leader who is under pressure to improve performance of its team (Daft, 2011, p. 61). The T-P Leadership Questionnaire self-assessment insight contributes to the learner’s leadership development by; using the “T” and “P” for the majority of mostly true answers for the questions asked, decided by the scoring interpretation (Daft, 2011, p. 61). The contingency approach would be more appropriate in improving performance and satisfaction in any or all situations (2011, p. 58). Since using this approach, the effectiveness of the leader occurs, due to the fit between the leader’s behavior, style and conditions of the situation at hand (2011, p. 58). The scoring interpretation concept is asking you as a work-group leader, to respond to each item as mostly false or mostly true accordingly to your actions in a pressure situation. This concept could be very beneficial and effective in my leadership development by providing an understanding, visualization and leading followers within the organization (Daft, 2011, p. 59). This concept allow me as a leader to direct emphasis on which dimension of leadership is appropriate for the situation; (T) task orientation or (P) people orientation, realizing with this leadership style an “individual can rate high or low on either or both of the dimensions” (Daft, 2011, p. 61). In leader’s self-insight 3.1......

Structures in Business

...such as an owner or president. Advantages of a functional structure include having a single authority, employees with similar knowledge and a defined chain of command. It is a vertical structure with a hierarchy where information flows to the top of the chain (Daft, 2013. p. 318). Disadvantages of functional structure include things such as being more Bureurocratic and employees tend to overlook the larger picture of the organization. Daft explains that because these type companies are divided into departments, communication and coordination are slow and decision making may be poor (2013). 2. Another structure is the divisional approach. As opposed to the functional way, there are several teams across the same level that works on their own single product or service. Each of these teams has their own leader or manager. Pros of the divisional approach allow teams to be more focused on their own product or service. This allows them to be flexible and more reactive to changes (Daft, 2013. P. 320). Cons of this structure include higher overhead since it takes more employees to make up the teams and there may be a rivalry between teams due to competition. 3. The matrix is a combination of both functional and divisional (Daft, 2013 p. 321). There may be multiple higher leaders that manage different teams. These leaders report to higher supervisors. The matrix can be very effective since it can be flexible in a rapidly changing world. Teams work better together and have......

Analysis of the Organizational Structure of Perdue Farms

...better understanding of how complex an organization might be. The categories I have chosen to assess Perdue include specialization, technology, culture, goals, and size. These dimension factors along with others allow managers to understand exactly how a company operates. Specialization The term specialization is defined as “the degree to which organizational tasks are subdivided into separate jobs” (Daft, 2010). Perdue Farms has divided its tasks by choosing vertical integration to manage every detail. “As a vertically integrated agribusiness, the company is able to ensure quality at every step in the supply chain” (Perdue Inc., 2008). It breeds and hatches its own eggs (19 hatcheries), selects its contract growers, builds Perdue-engineered chicken houses, formulates and manufactures its own feed (12 poultry feedmills, 1 specialty feedmill, 2 ingredient blending operations), oversees the care and feeding of the chicks, operates its own processing plants (21 processing and further processing plants), distributes via its own trucking fleet, and markets the production. (Daft, 2010, pp. 629-630) Responsibilities at Perdue are dispersed throughout all of its departments to make sure production is executed the proper way. Perdue’s breeder operations, hatcheries, farming, processing and distribution all play a valid role in the importance of the company. According to the Marcic scale, I would rate Perdue Farms a one. It is very clear that every aspect of this organization......

...their goals (Deutschman, 2010). The employees sense the cross-functional leadership environment within the company (2010). In the 70’s organizational designs were more “self-contained” where their was more “clear boundaries” of the firm with the suppliers and customers (Anand & Daft, 2007, p. 1). Companies such as Planters Peanuts uses a “horizontal” mechanism by which responsibilities of product sales, advertising and distribution are all handled by the brand manager (Anand & Daft, 2007, p. 2). In the 80’s team-and process-based” were working cross-functionally to which subsections where coordinating horizontally (Anand & Daft, 2007. p.3). For example Ford Motor Co. had used such design for “new product development”. Both team leads from research and engineering work together in the same office. Resources were immediately available for the teams such as bringing a Japanese-fluent engineering was immediately available when there was language barrier (Anand & Daft, 2007, p.3). As a result this cuts the time of completing processing of work. This type of horizontal organization impacts members of the teams in that they feel empowered, have flexibility and gain “broader perspective” (Anand & Daft, 2007, p. 4). There is an increase in degree of learning where members of team feel the social support and recognition. As situations change these impacts companies to therefore redesign their structure and this involves staffs adapting to this change by training in order to......

...control. To start, what other events of the Cold War years fit this idea of “proxy war?” What kind of steps did world leaders take to keep Cold War proxy wars from heating up? What were such leaders thinking? Due on Monday 10:00am ( I would prefer this by tonight 10pm) Discussion question #2: not an Essay - a couple paragraphs disccing the following. Not long before the Vietnam War is considered to have started – around the time period we focus on this class week, 1963 and 1964 – Dag Hammarskjøld of Sweden was serving as Secretary General of the United Nations. He is quoted to have said, “Peacekeeping is not a soldier’s job, but only a soldier can do it.” This quote is often the driving logic behind what came to be known as mlitary operations other than war. With the years prior to this week’s discussions, American forces in southern Vietnam were relatively few and were called “advisors.” They brought American expertise with them for the purpose of training. From 1950 onward, the MAAG and later Special Forces trained Vietnamese forces to serve as a modern combatant force, but in this course week period, American forces moved beyond a partnership arrangement and took on direct combat roles. Such a shift called for decisions at the highest levels. What can we learn about the minds and concerns of American senior leaders that allow for difficult decisions and commitments at such moments – what we might call “turning points?” Due Thurday May......

Custom Chips Inc

...satellite transmitters and other radio frequency devices (Daft, 2013)”. Over the years the company has proven to be very profitable and rapidly expanding (Daft, 2013). Custom Chips Inc. is very productive, but due to the technicality and precise specifications within the manufacturing process, there are many conflicts within the company that have lead to the emphasis on reduction of costs. Throughout this case, I will look to exploit points of conflict within the company, analyze the workflow interdependence across independent functions and department, and finally provide some recommendations that the management could incorporate to make the manufacturing process more efficient, including a suggested and revised organizational structure, that I feel will increase the teamwork and communication within the organization. As stated earlier, cost reduction has become a priority due to the fact that corporate growth has taken a downturn as a result of a corresponding downturn in the industry, and this can be addressed by increasing efficiency within the manufacturing processes. The first several issues that surround Custom Chips Inc. is the fact that wafer fabrication usually takes eight to twelve weeks, and further assembly takes four to six weeks (Daft, 2013). Additionally, each step along the manufacturing and product development phase is subject to considerable risks in errors from the operator or the machines (Daft, 2013). These errors account for a product yield of......

Deadmau5 vs Daftpunk

...Compare and Contrast Electronic music is getting closer and closer to becoming mainstream everyday, but what does it take to become famous, in this up and coming genre? From the 90’s till present day other then a funky beat you need a gimmick to reach super stardom that’s exactly what Deadmau5 and daft punk both have, and they are legends in Electronic music partly because of it. Joel Zimmerman Aka Deadmau5 pronounced (dead mouse) is a progressive house/ trance producer from Canada. Starting his career in 2006 that is famous not only for his music, but the mouse helmet he wears while preforming. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter make up the electronic duo Daft Punk from France. They produce House music or by their definition “robot rock” and became popular in the late 90’s. They are also known for wearing helmets designed to make them look like robots. They both share a common gimmick wearing their helmets which I find to be their alter egos. When Joel Zimmerman puts on that mouse head he transforms into Deadmau5 along with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter once they have their robot costume on they have become Daft Punk. Its what their fans identify them by its their gimmick that people can slap on anything from tee shirts to coffee mugs. It makes them more recognizable and catches people’s attention. Wouldn’t you be more curious if you saw a guy DJing music in a mouse head or a robot costume? Not only do their costumes set them apart......

A Tug of War is described as “a contest in which two people or teams pull opposite ends of a rope in an attempt to drag the opposition over a central line.” (thefreedictionary.com) In NASCAR the tug of war has become a cultural one, where drivers have claimed that the corporation’s concern was more with the rules violations and less with driver safety. Business Management

...Introduction Dramatic advances in technology, globalization, changes in social values, changes in the workforce, and other environmental shifts have created a challenging environment for not only organizations but for the employees within these organizations with the title of “manager” (Daft, 2012). We have discovered thus far in this course that managers must come tooled with various characteristics and traits to be able to overcome the many obstacles and dilemma that must be faced in the 21st Century workforce. Daft (2012) states that, “Although some management theorists propose a long list of skills, the necessary skills for managing a department or an organization can be summarized in three categories: conceptual, human, and technical”. Although the degree of which the above mentioned skills will be used varies dependent on the level of management within an organization, it is still very important that a manager possesses these skills to perform to the best of their ability. To assess where we are with the three mentioned management skills, we were asked to complete a Management Aptitude Questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 18 situational style questions of which we were to answer them as best and as honestly as we could. The purpose of completing this survey was to give us an individualized report that would tell us what areas we were strong or weak in as it related to the three management skills: conceptual, human, and technical with the plan to......
