1. In-text citation

In-text citation should include the information for the reader to find the full entry in the list of Works Cited at the end of the paper.

a. If the author’s name is mentioned in the text, only the page number is given in parentheses at the end of the citation

b. If the author’s name is not mentioned in the text, then both the last name of the author and the page number should be given in parentheses.

c. REMEMBER to shift the punctuation mark if there is one, such as a period, a comma, to the place after the parenthesis.

For example:

1. Stuart Hall says,”Identity is formed at the unstable point where the ‘unspeakable’ storied of subjectivity meet the narratives of history, of a culture”(135) .

2. Some scholars believe that “Identity is formed at the unstable point where the ‘unspeakable’ storied of subjectivity meet the narratives of history, of a culture”(Hall 135).

If you have cited two or more works by the same author in your paper, a shortened title, which is enough to indicate which of the author’s work is cited, should be given in parentheses before the page nnumber. The items in parentheses should be divided by a comma.

For example:

1. Joseph Gibaldi points out,“Nearly all research builds on previous research. Researchers commonly begin a project by studying past work in the area and deriving relevant informaton and ideas from their predecessors. This processs is largely responsible for the continual expansion of human knowledge”(Handbook, 114).

2. What is plagiarism? Simply speaking, “Using another person’s ideas or expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source constitues plagiarism”(Gibaldi, Manual, 151).

...Harley Kimble Ms. Longherst English 101 April 30, 2012 From One Controller to Another Video games and computer games use a game controller as the input device that directs movements and actions of on screen objects. Two commonly used game controllers are gamepads and motion-sensing game controllers (Joyce). Game controllers not only enrich the gaming experience but also aid in the movements and actions of players. A gamepad is held by the player with both hands, allowing the player to control the movement or actions of the objects in the video or computer games. Players press buttons on the gamepad, often with their thumbs, to carry out actions. Some gamepads have swiveling sticks that also trigger events during game play (Cortez 12-34). Some gamepads include wireless capabilities; others connect via cable directly to the game console or a personal computer. Motion-sensing game controllers allow the user to guide on-screen elements or trigger events by moving a handheld input device in predetermined directions through the air. These controllers communicate with a game console or personal computer via wired or wireless technology. A variety of games, from sports to simulations, use motion-sensing game controllers. Some of these controllers, such as baseball bats and golf clubs, are designed for only one specific kind of game; others are general purpose. A popular, general-purpose, motion-sensing game controller is Nintendo’s Wii Remote. Shaped like a television......

...r Williams American Studies 104 14 March 2008 Found Voices: Carl Sagan Carl Sagan was perhaps one of the most influential scientific minds that the world has ever experienced. When he learned that stars were actually extremely distant suns, his world was changed and the magnitude of the universe opened up to him. Another strong motivator into science came with his reading of a popular science fiction book of the time, The Burroughs Tales. The stories were not extremely sound scientifically, but still presented ideals of adventure and the unknown. The idea that life could exist elsewhere in the universe fascinated Sagan and remained with him for the rest of his life (Eicher). Perhaps one of Sagan’s most famous individual accomplishments was his involvement with the Pioneer 10 Space Probe. The probe was created to be the first object to exit our galaxy. Sagan acknowledged that the chances of anything actually discovering the probe were astronomical, but believed that it was important to promote public appreciation for science and thought the project to be “all in good fun” (McDonough 50). Public appreciation for science was, in fact, what made Sagan the “superstar scientist” that we hear of today. ...Kinesthetic Learner There are three main learning styles which consist of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. A visual learner learns best by visually seeing and reading what they are learning. An auditory learner enjoys listening to what is being taught in order to better comprehend the material. Kinesthetic learners are typically hands on learners. Kinesthetic learners use bodily communication to assist with learning amongst several other strategies is extremely helpful; however we can also have multiple distractions. Kinesthetic learners use physical activity to learn and comprehend information. When I took the learning styles quiz I scored a seven on the kinesthetic learning section, I also scored a five on the visual and auditory learning sections. Although my score shows that I have strong points in each learning aspect, the way I feel I learn to the best of my ability is through the kinesthetic learning style. The outcome of this quiz does not come to a surprise to me due to the fact I have always considered myself to have kinesthetic learning habits. There are numerous strategies that are used by kinesthetic learners. Thinking proactive and taking color coded notes, sitting in the back of the class in case you fidget, and being creative with power points or projects are great strategies to use. Personally I like to listen to Mozart and other non vocal music while I am studying, taking notes, or writing essays. Taking breaks, working in short intervals,......

Oedipus Gateway Style Essay

...Oedipus Gateway Style Essay No one can decide where and how one comes from. Being born into an awful place or situation creates a huge impact on one’s actions and choices. Oedipus, born to live a terrible fate, makes arrogant actions and ignorant choices. Although Oedipus brings Apollo’s curse to fulfillment and ultimately his own downfall, Oedipus is not to blame for his miserable life. He is an innocent man unlucky to have been born into a father’s curse. King Laius, Oedipus’s father, brings upon a curse on himself but also on his own son, Oedipus, even though Oedipus was not born yet. The fact that Oedipus had nothing to do with his own fathers curse exculpates Oedipus from creating his own demise. Oedipus could not control the fact that the curse was going to be fulfilled: “If you cannot be free of the gods, then you cannot be made free” (DOC A). The fact that Oedipus is a human and Apollo a god, shows how powerless the king Oedipus is. The power of Apollo’s ability to manipulate peoples’ thoughts leads Oedipus to make rash decisions and to ignorantly curse himself. The curse that King Laius gives to Oedipus shows how guilty Laius is and not his son. Oedipus does not realize that he is the king’s son and the husband of his own mother. After receiving a prophecy to kill his own father and marry his own mother, Oedipus runs away, and blindly kills the king of Thebes without realizing the fact that he has killed his biological father. Not knowing......

...Understanding Kinesthetic Learning Breanna Waller September 26, 2013 INFT 101 As I was making my way through the Learning Styles Assessment, I knew right off the bat which learning style I would learn more towards. Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic are the three more prominent learning styles. Auditory learning is when someone uses as much auditory learning as possible. For instance, reading out loud to get a better understanding. Visual learners usually sit closer to the front of the classroom and make things more colorful to stand out. Being a Kinesthetic learner, I understand that being able to move around is almost necessary to stay focused. Learning more about each learning style, I have been able to identify that I am a kinesthetic learner because it is essential to be able to practice what it is I have learned and be active and constantly apart of what is going on in order to gain a better comprehension of my studies. After going through the Learning Styles Assessment, it is clear that I am a kinesthetic learner. It definitely matches my personality. I think going through this assessment to be able to get a clearer understanding of how my learning style works was really great. Comparing my results to have I know I already learn what interesting to say the least. I noticed there were many similarities and there were also different ways to learn that may be more helpful. I have noticed that during my time with online learning, I have to be seated in......

Style Analysis Essay

...Julia Pezzullo Period 1 4/4/14 Style Essay This passage from The Great Influenza describes the scientific process and how a scientist must have the courage to “embrace” uncertainty to make the unknown known. Through the use of metaphors, analogies, and other rhetorical devices, the author further conveys a scientist’s tedious process to reveal a newfound truth. Barry begins by contrasting the strength and conviction of certainty with the weakness and fear of uncertainty. He uses clear, definitive language to convey broad ideas. He establishes direction in his second paragraph as he lists the qualities an ideal scientist should have. He emphasizes that a scientist must have “the courage to accept—indeed, embrace—uncertainty.” To conclude this paragraph the author uses Claude Bernard, a famous physiologist, as an authority to strengthen the make-up of a scientist. Barry opens the third paragraph with a metaphor, which strengthens the courageous aspect of a scientist. “A scientist must accept that all his or her work, even beliefs, may break apart upon the sharp edge of a single laboratory finding.” Barry then uses the example of Einstein to express this point of a total reversal of beliefs in an attempt to persuade the reader that to face a destruction of one’s convictions requires a far greater courage, to perceive uncertainty as an ally rather than a foe. Paragraph four starts to convey how a scientist must “create” the tools needed to shed light on what is......

Management Style Essay

...Management Style Essay 04AUG14 Ebony Jackson Management Style Essay My definition of management correlates with the definition given by BusinesDictionary.com, which states, “management is the organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management consists of the interlocking functions of creating corporate policy and organizing, planning, controlling, and directing an organization's resources in order to achieve the objectives of that policy”(Management, 2014). Basically management collaborates the efforts and thoughts of individuals and unites them under the same goal and premise of the greater organization which all are apart. Good qualities of manager consist of effective time management, providing sound training and mentoring of staff, hiring well, providing regular feedback, and addressing performance issues directly and constructively. Good managers usually perform well under pressure and when unexpected problems arise they quickly rise to the occasion. Effective managers have expertise with interpersonal relationships, facilitating and understanding the needs of his/ her staff. Poor qualities of a manager include inadequate training, yelling and shouting to make a point, high turnover rate of staff, and dictatorship style of management which offers no input from others. Managers that require additional training to become successful usually have poor performance statistics and unhappy employees that do......

...MLA Research Paper (Daly) Daly 1 Angela Daly Professor Chavez English 101 14 March XXXX A Call to Action: Regulate Use of Cell Phones on the Road When a cell phone goes off in a classroom or at a concert, we are irritated, but at least our lives are not endangered. When we are on the road, however, irresponsible cell phone users are more than irritating: They are putting our lives at risk. Many of us have witnessed drivers so distracted by dialing and chatting that they resemble drunk drivers, weaving between lanes, for example, or nearly running down pedestrians in crosswalks. A number of bills to regulate use of cell phones on the road have been introduced in state legislatures, and the time has come to push for their passage. Regulation is needed because drivers using phones are seriously impaired and because laws on negligent and reckless driving are not sufficient to punish offenders. No one can deny that cell phones have caused traffic deaths and injuries. Cell phones were implicated in three fatal accidents in November 1999 alone. Early in November, two-year-old Morgan Pena was killed by a driver distracted by his cell phone. Morgan’s mother, Patti Pena, reports that the driver “ran a stop sign at 45 mph, broadsided my vehicle and killed Morgan as she sat in her car seat.” A week later, corrections officer Shannon Smith, who was guarding prisoners by the side of the road, was killed by a woman distracted by a phone call (Besthoff). On Thanksgiving weekend Signal......

In order to be a good manager, one must possess the ability to lead and govern others as well as themselves.
