...structure. I think McLuhan could have definitely gotten his message across easier with a more friendly writing style. To be honest, reading this has been a frustrating experience for me. Although it may have been obvious, I am not entirely sure his stance on technology or media itself. Is it something he likes or dislikes? It is probably explained in the text but I was unsure. Another issue I had was that I could not distinguish a clear structure in the book; it sometimes felt to me that the topics came in random order. I wish I had more specific things to ask the author but I think that is a testament to how little I was able to pull from the readings. I think there are many interesting potential essay topics to be found in “The Medium is the Massage”. I am sure quite a few essays could be written trying to decipher McLuhan’s ideas. Another one I can think of is whether the idea behind “the medium is the message” is a good thing or something we want to try to change. McLuhan brings up a lot of ideas that are very open to debate and therefore I think there are many topics would make great essay prompts. I don’t have many specific points that I need the instructor to address, because I feel that there are a lot of sections that I don’t understand. Something that I found that was interesting was the mention of a “global village” on page 63. I am curious as to what he means by this. In general, I would very much like the instructor to bring forth a lot of these ideas in the......

The Medium Is the Massage

...Miles 4/24/13 The Medium is the Massage In our world of social media and technology the individual is overly involved in others affairs, this allows for the person to form an altered identity to portray to their audience, and breaks down the barriers of privacy. This lack of privacy has created a movement in our daily lives, a movement in which technology and social media has molded our environment to the point where it has ultimately become our environment. We have unknowingly created a global village in which the individual is put on display and where we as a human race have become overly connected, and overly critical. It is shaping the way in which we perceive ourselves, and the rest of the world. “Too many people know too much about each other. Our new environment compels commitment and participation. We have become irrevocably involved with, and responsible for, each other” (McLuhan 24). Every day, during lunch I cant help but glance up from my plate of food and notice the mass amounts of people checking their phones. It has been shown that the average person checks their phone every six and a half minutes, and can check their phone up to 150 times a day! (Spencer 2013). The cell phone has developed so rapidly over the past ten years that we are now able to look and talk to a significant other face to face through a screen. We no longer send letters in the mail, or send a postcard “Because of electric speed, we can no longer wait and see. George Washington once......

Validity of Sports Massage

...The Validity of Sports Massage Treatments with Regards To Current Practices Therapeutic sports massage in the context of sports specific injuries and rehabilitation, has been said to not only improve the physical attributes of certain structures and muscles within the human body, but to also have a strong psychological effect for an individual helping them overcome injury or increasing their injury prevention rate while helping to optimise performance (Galloway, 2004). In light of this it can be assumed that every person irrespective of whether they play sport or not, would benefit highly from some form of massage therapy (Alvarado, 2002). To assess whether or not sports massage is an effective method of treatment or is in actual fact just a psychological treatment that has no real impact on the body, it is necessary to observe and evaluate the conducted research of current practitioners and other researchers that provide valid arguments to either strengthen or weaken the claim for more massage to be performed. The proposed benefits and hindrances will need to be highlighted within recent literature alongside the credibility of the sources that the research is derived from, as only if a source is deemed to be reliable can the research be seen as potential evidence to back up discussed points and reasoning. This review of literature will also set out to identify any potential future research points that could be taken to highlight and......

Foot Massage

...smoothing Chinese foot massage is one of the alternative methods which can be treated as a physical treatment to make people feel relaxation and decrease their body pain. Traditional Chinese foot massage consists of a foot bath followed by an intense massage on different pressure points in the feet, ankles and legs. Chinese foot massage has been practiced for centuries and it is popular in China. Both ancient Chinese books and modern medical texts mention the effect of foot massage which has been extensively used in treatment for medical symptoms, for example, arthritis, back, neck, and shoulder pain. It is also recommended by physiotherapists in China. Even the feeling of a traditional Chinese foot massage may differ, it basically begins with soaking the feet in hot water adding tea and herbs. During the feet soaking, the therapist massages a person’s shoulders, back and neck for 10 to 15 minutes. After that, the feet are removed from the water and the person is transferred to a comfortable chair where the therapist is ready to work. The therapist uses cream or lotion on the foot and then rubs, pushes and massages pressure points on the bottom, top, and sides of the foot. The foot massage is often painful, particularly for first timers because it is believed that each part of the foot is connected to a part of the body. If pain is felt in a particular part of the foot, it is believed the corresponding part of the body has a problem. So far, foot massage is welcomed by both......
