Scheduling (when to do the job) is the process by which all resources needed for specific jobs are allocated, coordinated, and synchronized at the proper time and place, with necessary access, so that work can be executed with minimal delay and completed by the agreed upon date, within budget estimates. The schedule establishes when jobs will be done and what resources can best be applied to their performance. Resources include manpower, materials, tools and special equipment. Access refers to when the equipment will be prepared and accessible so that it can be worked on in safe (locked out/tagged out) condition, with necessary precautions taken, permits obtained, and any specialized documentation, drawings, or information in hand. Proper time relates to job start, duration of execution, and completion within the time frame agreed upon with the internal customer during the weekly coordination meeting.

The Weekly Expectation
Scheduling is the locus from which all maintenance activity is executed. Scheduling should be viewed as the “point” function and “marketing arm” of the system because it yields the earliest tangible results (often within weeks of start up).
All individuals and groups perform better and accomplish more with clearly established, communicated and published expectations. When the maintenance function is managed without a weekly schedule, there are no specific expectations as to what is to be accomplished with the resources for which payroll checks will be drawn. Instead, whatever reactive demands are made is what will be done.

The fundamental requirement target (the schedule) against which to control, followed by action (execution of the schedule) to achieve the target. The results, measured against the original intention (called schedule compliance), provide feedback for correcting deviations (improving future schedule compliance). Managers…...

...CPU SCHEDULINGCPU scheduling in UNIX is designed to benefit interactive processes. Processes are given small CPU time slices by a priority algorithm that reduces to round-robin scheduling for CPU-bound jobs.The scheduler on UNIX system belongs to the general class of operating system schedulers known as round robin with multilevel feedback which means that the kernel allocates the CPU time to a process for small time slice, preempts a process that exceeds its time slice and feed it back into one of several priority queues. A process may need much iteration through the "feedback loop" before it finishes. When kernel does a context switch and restores the context of a process. The process resumes execution from the point where it had been suspended.Each process table entry contains a priority field. There is a process table for each process which contains a priority field for process scheduling. The priority of a process is lower if they have recently used the CPU and vice versa.The more CPU time a process accumulates, the lower (more positive) its priority becomes, and vice versa, so there is negative feedback in CPU scheduling and it is difficult for a single process to take all the CPU time. A maintenance routine should include cleaning the computer, disk maintenance, and regularly updating virus protection and operating system software. Cleaning An LCD (liquid crystal display) screen should be cleaned using a soft cotton cloth and a solution of water and isopropyl alcohol. The solution should be applied to the cloth first, never sprayed directly on the screen. To clean a keyboard, a can of compressed air can be used to spray in between the keys to push out dust and crumbs. Q-tips, a small flat screwdriver, or sticky notes can also be used to remove dust and crumbs from the keyboard. A can of compressed air should be used to clean the back of the computer tower, especially the cooling fan vents. The exterior of a mouse can be cleaned using a damp soft cloth. If the mouse has a trackball, the trackball should be removed and wiped with a dry cloth. Disk Maintenance Most operating systems have built-in performance and maintenance features that allow the user to free up space on the hard disk and rearrange files on your hard disk to increase efficiency. Past and current maintenance practices in both the private and government sectors would imply that maintenance is the actions associated with equipment repair after it is broken. The dictionary defines maintenance as follows: “the work of keeping something in proper condition; upkeep.” This would imply that maintenance should be actions taken to prevent a device or component from failing or to repair normal equipment degradation experienced with the operation of the device to keep it in proper working order. Unfortunately, data obtained in many studies over the past decade indicates that most private and government facilities do not expend the necessary resources to maintain equipment in proper working order. Rather, they wait for equipment failure to occur and then take whatever actions are necessary to repair or replace the equipment. Nothing lasts forever and all equipment has associated with it some predefined life expectancy or operational life. For example, equipment may be designed to operate at full design load for 5,000 hours and may be designed to go through 15,000 start and stop cycles. The need for maintenance is predicated on actual or impending failure – ideally, maintenance is performed to keep equipment and systems running efficiently for at least design life of the component(s). ...2.5 SCHEDULING When a computer is multiprogrammed, it frequently has multiple processes competing for the CPU at the same time. This situation occurs whenever two or more processes are simultaneously in the ready state. If only one CPU is available, a choice has to be made which process to run next. The part of the operating system that makes the choice is called the scheduler and the algorithm it uses is called the scheduling algorithm. These topics form the subject matter of the following sections. Many of the same issues that apply to process scheduling also apply to thread scheduling, although some are different. Initially we will focus on process scheduling. Later on we will explicitly look at thread scheduling. 2.5.1 Introduction to Scheduling Back in the old days of batch systems with input in the form of card images on a magnetic tape, the scheduling algorithm was simple: just run the next job on the tape. With timesharing systems, the scheduling algorithm became more complex because there were generally multiple users waiting for service. Some mainframes still combine batch and timesharing service, requiring the scheduler to decide whether a batch job or an interactive user at a terminal should go next.
