Nobody State University Tuition Universities must constantly weigh tuition pricing in relation to the cost of providing quality educational services. Determining where to set tuition pricing is an increasingly critical decision which administrators and university presidents must analyze when considering the university’s goals. Not only does the cost of tuition play a factor in student enrollment, it also provides a major revenue source to an institution. The question which universities must answer is, “What effect will raising or lowering the university’s tuition have on the total earned revenue? This paper investigates this question and reviews under what conditions a change in tuition prices will cause the revenue to rise, fall, or remain constant. Finally, applying a hypothetical tuition elasticity coefficient of demand for education value of -1.2, provides a tuition increase recommendation to the Nobody State University’s president and administration board based upon the university’s potential revenue impact.
Historically, the demand for a university or college education has not reduced as prices have risen. In fact, even though prices have gone up, the number of college applicants has continued to rise. Meagan Pant writes in her article in the Tribune Business New, “The majority of Americans think college is too expensive for most people to afford -- although the widely held opinion has not hindered skyrocketing enrollment or stopped virtually all parents from expecting their child go to college.” (Pant, 2012) In these days of tighter budgets, college administrators must now consider if this trend will continue. One possibility is that the central bank could raise inflation expectations by committing itself to future monetary expansion. Even if nominal interest rates cannot fall any further, higher expected inflation can lower real interest rates by making them negative, which would stimulate investment spending. A second possibility is that the central bank could conduct expansionary open-market operations with a larger variety of financial instruments than it normally uses. For example, it could buy mortgages and corporate debt and thereby lower the interest rates on these kinds of loans. The Federal Reserve actively pursued this last option during the downturn of 2008 and 2009. Some economists have suggested that the possibility of hitting the zero lower bound for interest rates justifies setting the target rate of inflation well above zero. Under zero inflation, the real interest rate, like the nominal interest, can never fall below zero. But if the normal rate of inflation is, say, 4 percent, then the central bank can easily push the real interest rate to negative 4 percent by lowering the nominal interest rate toward zero. Thus, moderate inflation gives monetary policymakers more room to stimulate the economy when needed, reducing the risk of hitting up against the zero lower bound and having the economy fall into a liquidity trap....

The value of sociological research into lowering the drinking age to 18 and the practical implications of this can be broken down into a few key parts. The first being if we lower the legal age to 18 and change the social norms drinking will no longer be a big deal. The second part is how individuals between the ages of 18-20 handle themselves when traveling to countries that allow drinking at the age of 18. There have been many cases of young American tourists going abroad and getting drunk, many for the first time and causing trouble because they are unable to handle this new found freedom.  Those under the age of 21 are more likely to be heavy "binge" drinkers (consuming over 5 drinks at least once a week). 22% of all students younger than 21 compared to 18% over the age of 21 are heavy drinkers. 1982 until 1987 about 46% of students reported "vomiting after drinking." This jumped to over 50% after the law change in 1984. Significant increases were also found for other variables: "cutting class after drinking" jumped from 9% to almost 12%; "missing class because of hangover" went from 26% to 28%; "getting lower grade because of drinking" rose from 5% to 7%; and "been in a fight after drinking" increased from 12% to 17%. Many young people count the days to their 21st birthday because they finally can drink legally. This journey into adulthood causes confusion considering other milestones are reached at 18. Upon reaching maturity, young people can vote, serve in the military, and marry without consent. If an 18-year-old can make such significant, life-changing decisions, he or she should have the right lawfully to consume alcohol. In 1984, Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which necessitated that states increase the public possession and buying age of alcohol to 21 or federal funding for highways was reduced. ...Lower Standards, Weaker Army Due to the U.S. Army low enlistment rate it was decided to lower the requirements for entry to the service. The standards have been lowered in areas like health, physical condition, age and even criminal records (Joining with criminal record, not dated). The Army is giving recruits bigger incentive bonuses to join the service. This makes people join the service for monetary reasons rather than the will to serve the country. Due to these adjustments, the Army is having a bigger drop-out rate and higher crime rate than ever before. Soldiers are just not as qualified as they should be. In the long run this will weaken the military to a devastating outcome. I remember when I first joined the military, it took me about three full months to complete the screening and entry process before I was finally able to shipped for basic training. This process included everything from drug screening, physical fitness tests, psychological screening and educational knowledge (Joining the Army, not dated). I even had to take a test in order to find out which jobs did I qualified for. Even though I was ready to join right away I still had to wait the necessary time for all the process to be completed. Once I arrive at boot camp things weren’t as easy as I expected. There were many long days and lots of screaming from the drill sergeants. When you turn 18 a million doors open, you can change your name, get tattooed, vote, join the military, go to jail and be trialed as an adult, basically anything you can think of, except one thing and that’s buying/drinking alcohol. That’s one thing that always got my attention: why 21? If you are considered by the law an adult at 18 then you should be treated like one in all aspects of it. Everyone has their own opinion on this matter, and there have been numerous arguments for each side. As I was surfing the web, I came across an article by Matt Nagin. Nagin’s article was “Top 3 Reasons Why the Drinking Age Should Not Be Lowered to 18”. It grabbed my attention so I decided to give it a look, Nagin’s 3 top reasons were, drunk driving, binge drinking and alcohol poisoning, and violent behavior all in that order. According to the article Nagin states that there is an average of 17,000 deaths related to drunk driving. This survey was conducted in 2010. The numbers have slightly gone down (Nagin). From all the drunken driving statistics rates were the highest among 21-25 year old at 23.4% and 15.1% for 18-20 year olds, but after the age of 25 the rates decrease (Nagin).
