A chief information officer (CIO) is a job title for the person in an organization that is the senior executive for the information technology department. The CIO is responsible for the strategic planning, implementing, and overseeing the entire IT department (Wikipedia, 2013). Now that the technology is more relevant than ever in business today, this is a very demanding job. Not only staying up to date with all the current technology needs and trends, but planning for the future as well.
Someone who is pursuing to be a CIO, should first get their degree in the technology field. Do not get a certificate, or AA, and bachelors degree is required to get started in this position. Then an MBA in a technology area would really benefit the candidate in becoming a CIO (Woolford, 2002). According to CIO.com (Polansky, 2001) the top ten qualifications executives are looking when hiring a CIO are: ability to hire, develop and retain high-quality IT professionals, international or global experience, knowledge and experience in a specific industry, ability to create and manage change, great communications skills, superior management skills, good relationship skills, needs to be business savy, expertise in aligning and leveraging technology for the advantage of enterprise, and outstanding leadership.
Being the CIO has a tremendous amount of responsibility. Business today is done mostly by technology, and if something goes wrong the IT department is usually the first to blame. It is important to have this qualities and education in order to be a successful CIO in business today. But, what does a CIO need to be successful in an national emergency situation? Or the CIO needs to travel a lot for business, what supplies would he/she need to be successful? Or if company needed the CIO to work in combat zones, what would the CIO need to accomplish his/her jobs? One can…...

Cio/It Leaders

...A. Using the IT Savvy four types of the CIO, choose a type for each of CIO or IT leaders for all of the cases we have reviewed in this class. Give example of why you think that the CIO is this type of manager. B. Answer the following questions also for each: a. Is it the right manager for the business and their IT strategy? For IBM, the company had evolved without common systems, and had many duplicated processes and systems across the company. The new CFO decided to focus on IT cost, and saw that a common platform for business processes across the company (SAP) could reduce cost and provide more effective communication. This was more a cost-driven decision rather than a decision to improved business processes. So the management structure they had in place seems appropriate for their strategic needs. At Zara and Otis, business process improvement was the key driver for IT development. In both cases, IT decisions were made at the highest levels of the company, and projects were specifically targeted at speeding business processes and decision-making. The Zara POS system and the OTISLINE customer service center fed information to a central location and this information was used to allow quick response to changing needs. For SEJ and Hilton, IT systems were focused on customer needs in support of corporate strategy. At SEJ the strategy was “Freshness Job #1” and at Hilton, it was CRM which could mean customer relationship management, but in Hilton it also......

...managers. Human Resource Management can be defined as the useful selection and employment of employees to best achieve the goals and the plan of the organizations, as well as the goals and the needs of employees. The responsibilities of human resource management should be shared by human resource specialists and line management. To achieve this, it is required to clearly know the main purpose of human resource management. The functions of human resource management are divided into two parts. The different disciplines of HR require evaluation in compensation, benefits, safety, payroll, recruiting and training. Which means his evaluation is cross-discipline. A human resource manager who stays in his/her office all day will not be efficient at building relationships with employees. Another function of the human resource manager is to gain the trust of employees--the best way to establish trust and is through daily conversations with the employees. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Human resource jobs require strong interpersonal skills.” Again, with a smaller workforce, the results of an HR manager's interpersonal skills may be seen more quickly than in a large business. Employee relations are a large part of the human resources manager’s job function, because employee concerns encompass a wide range of problems over which the manager has influence. The human resource manager is the “face of HR” and therefore depended upon to be both human resources......

Cio Incompliance of Norms

...Magnusson, J & Bygstad, B 2013, ‘Why I act differently: studying patterns of legitimation among CIOs through motive talk.’ Information Technology & People, vol. 26, Iss 3. IT governance has become the de facto norm system for Chief Information Officers (CIO) in the organizational environment. As the importance of norms increases it has become necessary to study how CIOs legitimate incompliance with these norms. This academic journal focusses on the study of the legitimation of norm incompliance by CIOs in Swedish organizations. The authors, Johan Magnusson(University of Gothenburg and Norwegian School of IT, Gothenburg, Sweden) and Bendik Bygstad(Norwegian School of IT, Oslo, Norway) attempt to construct a picture of how CIOs relate to norms. In order to encompass a healthy study group for statistical accuracy, the authors focused their study on eighteen CIOs in large organizations. The organizations chosen were recognised by the industry for their excellent IT governance. Norm compliance is important for CIOs as they strive for recognition in the organizational hierarchy. For most CIOs, it is important to be viewed as an important member of the organizational management team at large. This need for recognition stems from the expectation that the position of CIO is a possible qualifier for significant roles such as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization. In the eyes of the CIO good judgement and quick decision making are paramount factors for success. The goal......

Cio Challenges – Preparing for It Leadership

...CIO Challenges – Preparing for IT Leadership ITM T 6:00pm-9:30pm SPRING 2012 Date: 03/28/2012 ------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION (5 Points) Jim Barton, the former head of Loan Operations, is appointed the new CIO of the IVK Corporation as the new CEO is attempting a turnaround following a period of slowing business performance1. Barton has no IT background and the serious challenges gave him very little time to learn what effective IT management is all about. The story narrated to us three events Barton had experienced in the weekend before he entered the new office. On Friday evening, in the bar, he mysteriously encountered a wise kid who gave him a surprisingly good advice and inspiration by telling him it is important to know what you don’t know. On Sunday morning, during his jogging, Barton met with Bill Davies, the former CIO ad IVK. Bill told Jim that he “won’t last one year” in the job of CIO, which reminded Jim of the harsh truth that he would be judged on his performance, regardless of the lack of experience in the area that was his starting point. On the afternoon of the same day, Barton’s consultant and girlfriend Maggie made a very good suggestion that Barton should arrange meetings with CIOs, analysts, investors, customers, and other IT movers and shakers to help him better understand the role of a CIO. ------------------------------------------------- ISSUES/PROBLEMS (20 Points) * In taking on a new assignment, how......

Cio in China

...1。How CIO is perceived and accepted by large companies in China? In my opinion, CIO is a very new position in China competed to before. As before, the businessman more interest in marketing people or finance people in general. However, the large companies are pay more attention on this position based on today's new modern business model. As we can see, business is not only sale on the retailing, but also e-business become more popular. Now there is a highly percentage about customers would like to buy goods on line. Indeed, the CIO become important than the other Vice President based on this situation. Now, the companies require CIO with lots of skills. It is not just focus on IT. Also, it require CIO have a global vision about the business or companies. As I know, there is two different areas which the companies would like let the CIO take over. Firstly, it is data collection. Many companies is a chain companies, there are many retail stores in whole country. It is very difficult to collect the information. However, the CEO need a lot of data to help the company's growth and operate. Chinese companies need a CIO can solve this problem. Based on the information technology, the CEO can know the sales, inventory, and so on. Secondly, e-commerce may require CIO put a lots of energies. For example, online systems, mobile systems and so on. Each systems require only systems, also need a connection between each of them. So there is a lot of work need CIO to do. 2. If you are......

...talent is in a central “shared services” organization available to the entire organization (rather than just a particular business unit)? What are the pluses and minuses of such an organization structure? We think it is in the best interest for Jim Barton to reorganize the IT talent in a central “shared services” organization so the talent pool is available to entire organization. This will help the IT technical employees engaged in their day to day job function as this option will provide the opportunity to work on various projects requiring an array of technical skills. Cho’s conservation with Jim Barton (drawing upon the Jazz analogy and we can reference some key lines which Cho used to describe his Jazz performance) revealed a lot of important points about Cho liking the idea of a centralized shared services organization. Ivan Korsky is still a problem that IVK needs to resolve and may be putting him in a shared services organization will keep him more engaged on IVK job responsibility; currently his primary responsibility is Alpha3 project and he seems to be working “part-time” on the project (I may be wrong but what I think we can mention is that may be the Aplha3 project may not be as technically challenging to Ivan thereby allowing his to focus on his personal projects; putting him in a centralized shared services organization may be will keep him busy!) Advantages of centralized shared service organization: 1. Economies of scale 2. Overhead reduction and......

Outsourcing Jobs

...Outsourcing Jobs I think it is interesting to know the positive and negative arguments about outsourcing. On one hand, there is the current uproar about illegal immigrants swarming in to the U.S. to do the jobs that Americans don’t want to do. And on the other hand, there is the continuing outcry about jobs going overseas. This would be the outsourcing of jobs that Americans would be willing to accept if the corporations were not so adamant about improving their bottom line for their stockholders. So, what is outsourcing and offshore outsourcing? By definition, “outsourcing (or contracting out) is often defined as the delegation of non-core operations or jobs from internal production within a business to an external entity (such as a subcontractor) that specialized in that operation. Outsourcing is a business decision that is often made to lower costs or focus on competencies” (Miller, 2010). A good example of outsourcing is janitorial services. Instead of a company training several people for the position, they can outsource these tasks to another organization that specializes in recruitment services. This way they can save the time from hiring and training, and the work output should be of the highest quality. Offshore outsourcing is referred to as, “work done for a company by people in another country that is typically done at a much cheaper cost” (Miller, 2010). These services are outsourced elsewhere to countries other than where the goods and services are......
