It’s Not So Lonely Being Single In the words of Jo Coudert, “You do not need to be loved, not at the cost of yourself. The single relationship that is truly central and crucial in a life is the relationship to the self. Of all the people you will know in a lifetime, you are the only one you will never lose" (131). I could not agree more with Coudert. People should not sacrifice themselves in order to be loved. Your relationship with yourself is the most important relationship you will ever have. Being single can be very liberating; there are financial upsides to singlehood versus marriage as well as having the freedom to live your life without having to consider someone else first. There are many issues folks are not exposed to which couples have to deal with throughout their relationship. People often assume their single friends are lonely. As for me, I do not believe simply because a person lives the single life means he or she is lonely. Think of the financial advantages unattached people have compared to those in a relationship. In 2011, the average wedding budget in the United States was $27,021 (Jaeger). In the same year, couples spent an average of $15,000 to get divorced (Alterman). Washington State had 41,509 marriages in 2011 and 26,860 divorces and/or annulments (Center for Health Statistics, Washington State Department of Health, Table 1 and Table 5). Altogether, Washingtonians could have saved over a trillion dollars simply by not getting married in the first place. Also, take into consideration all the special occasions you spend money on throughout the course of a relationship: romantic dates, birthday presents, gifts for their family and friends, anniversary celebrations and vacations. Financial difficulties within a couple often cause the demise of a relationship. These are all examples of financial woes single people do not have the burden of…...

Happy Being Single

...INFORMATIVE SPEECH 1) How To Be Happy Being Single The life that we are bestowed with is truly a miracle. This precise miracle gets overshadowed with the contradictions that we live with. Contradictions like, the young want to be older and the old want to be young again; the dark want to be fair and the fair want to darken; the short want to be tall and the tall ones have their own problems. And just the same way, the single want to mingle and the ones with partners want to break free. Isn't that complicated enough? Well, let's take a moment and say aloud - "I am single. I am single! I AM SINGLE". Yes. It is not to rub salt on your wounds but for you to embrace it than dread it. Acceptance is the key to great decisions. It is, in fact, very empowering. Look at you. You live your life all by yourself because you are capable of being single and independent. If you still hate your relationship status, take another moment to remember all the things you have dealt with alone. I am single. No, I really am single and everyday I push my limits to achieve something better alone because I can't afford to waste my time waiting for someone who may or may not show up just so I could have the cliché happy ending to my fairytale because Disney says so. No, that is not the end to my life or your life for that matter. Life is living it, not waiting for it to be over. And why on Earth would I ever want to cripple myself to the aid of a person who sees me as nothing more than a baby......

It's Hard Being a Single Dad in America

...It’s hard being a single dad in America An Annotated Bibliography Morin, Amanda. "Fathers Raising Daughters: The Unique Challenges of Single Fatherhood." Education.com | An Education & Child Development Site for Parents | Parenting & Educational Resource. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 May 2013. According to the U.S. Census' most recent information, there are approximately 13 million children living in single-parent households. That in itself isn't all that surprising, but here's something that is: 2.5 million of those children are being raised by single fathers. That's nearly 1 in every 40 households –over half as many as ten years ago –in which custodial fathers are raising children, many of whom are girls. So, what kinds of challenges are single fathers of daughters facing? Some issues are gender neutral. Whether they're rearing boys or girls, custodial fathers tend to have a difficult time making ends meet. Unlike single mothers, single fathers are less likely to have flexible work hours and few are receiving child support. In fact, according to Current Population Reports, a publication of the U.S. Census, a mere 30 percent of custodial dads are awarded child support, as compared to 80 percent of custodial mothers. I will use this information to talk about the facts if my topic. "Best Interests of The Child." About.com Single Parents. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 May 2013. Parents seeking child custody or visitation often hear the phrase "best interests of the child" referred......

Technologically Lonely

...Technologically Lonely Hey, Hey! The old lady kept on yelling at the paper boy, yet he never noticed her. He had just hit her right in the face with the Sunday edition, but he could not realize anything that had happened. Because the paperboy was listening to his iPod, he was in his own world, caring about no one. It is clear that as newer technologies are widely available, teenagers are among the first ones to embrace its use. Unfortunately, in recent years, mp3 players, cell phones, and portable video games tend to negatively define how teenagers develop socially. The use of newer technologies without proper guidelines prevent teenagers from building healthy family relations, promotes teenage addictive behaviors and enforces loneliness although some may believe these devices and technologies connect teens further. Some might argue that electronics allow teenagers to keep in touch with their close ones. Many teenagers feel a lot more comfortable communicating with their friends through text, e-mail, or online websites as opposed to personally. People that support social networking say that the use of technology is a good way for shy people to talk to their friends, and express themselves over texting. Although it keeps teenagers connected, it doesn’t allow them to learn proper socializing skills to use with friends, family, or in their future professional life. First, portable electronic devices disable teenagers from building healthy family......

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter Plot Overview

...Plot Overview The first chapter of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter introduces us to John Singer and Spiros Antonapoulos, two good friends who live together in a town in the Deep South and who are both deaf-mutes. Antonapoulos works in his cousin's fruit store, and Singer works as a silver engraver in a jewelry shop. They spend ten years living together in this way. The Art of Being Single

...Single is not a status. It is a word that describes a person who is strong enough to live and enjoy life without depending on others. They say that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in something. As such, I should have earned beyond a doctorate degree in the art of being single. Now, while I am far from an expert in anything, there are few things I’ve learned while being single that it seems some people fail to notice. In my research, I learned some important truths and beauty about being single. Being single gives you time to be by yourself, with yourself. A “me time" perhaps. This is the time to reconnect with myself, a time where I can talk to myself, debating all the questions and answers that are bouncing in my head. Change can sometimes be good. Adaptation takes time when you just got from a break up, yet think of all the possibilities, meeting new people, going to new places, tackling new plans. Sometimes change is the best thing for us, as it opens us up to new activities and environments. Being single does not have to mean being afraid to love. I’ve never been in a relationship. But I don’t feel alone either, and I know I will love someday. Hopefully someone will treasure and treat my heart with love and respect. Staying open to love isn’t just about attracting a new relationship; it’s about being open to life. Even if you’re single, you still have so much to appreciate. You’re not alone when you’re single; you still have family and good friends.......

Lonely Planet

...the eight people hiding in the Secret Annex were arrested. Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, the two secretaries working in the building, found Anne's diaries strewn allover the floor. ,Miep Gies tucked them away in a desk drawer for safekeeping. After the war, when it became clear that Anne was dead, she gave the diaries, unread, to Anne's father, Otto Frank. After long deliberation, Otto Frank decided to fulfill his daughter's wish and publish her diary. He selected material from versions a and b, editing them into a shorter version later referred to as version c. Readers all over the world know this as The Diary of a fauna Girl. In making his choice, Otto Frank had to bear several points in mind. To begin with, the book had to be kept short so that it would fit in with a series put out by the Dutch publisher. In addition, several passages dealing with Anne's sexuality were omitted; at the time of the diary's initial publication, in 1947, it was not customary to write openly about sex, and certainly not in books for young adults. Out of respect for the dead, Otto Frank also omitted a number of unflattering passages about his wife and the other residents of the Secret Annex. Anne Frank, who was thirteen when she began her diary and fifteen when she was forced to stop, wrote without reserve about her likes and dislikes. When Otto Frank died in 1980, he willed his daughter's manuscripts to the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation in Amsterdam. Because the......

It's Hard Enough Being Me Essay

...October 15, 2015 Intermediate English Prof. Aponte Ingl. 3103-102 It’s Hard Enough Being Me The essay, “It’s hard enough being me”, by Anna Lisa Raya is about her experience when she went off to New York for college and she had to label herself as “Latina”. Anna Lisa explains that her dad was a second-generation Mexican, born and raised in Los Angeles, and her mom was born in Puerto Rico and raised in California. Raya herself was born and raised in Los Angeles in a Mexican neighborhood where she defined herself as Mexican. Only when she was with her grandmother and aunt from her mother’s side, she defined herself as Puerto Rican. When she went off to college, she had to answer what race she was and she had to pick “Latina”. She explains that it was the first time she had to think of that and put a label. She was confused because she did not have the physical aspects of a Latina, she did not know Mexico’s history or Puerto Rico’s, nor she knew how to speak Spanish. She felt like she did not have the “requirements” to be labeled as Latina but she couldn’t be labeled as an American because then she would be a “spic” (to Americans) or a “sell-out” (to Latinos). That thought bothered her until someone advised her that she had to be true to herself and not worry about what others think, and that she had to satisfy herself and not others. Raya finishes her essay by stating “Soy yo and no one else. Punto”; I am myself and no one else. That advice made her......

Marriage vs Single

...people prefer to stay single than to be married. They each have their pros and cons at times, and they’re different mindsets. I interviewed a married couple I have been close to for several years, and I also interviewed by two best friends who are single. After my research, I have compared and contrasted what I learned about being single and being married. One thing I learned from my interview is responsibility, and how huge of a difference it is in single and married life. Married people are responsible for their husband/wife, while single people are responsible for themselves. Single people want to live their life through the motions and take it as an adventure, explore new things, see new places; but it’s hard for married people to do that. While married people are constantly thinking of their partner, or their children, single people only think of themselves. Life can be easy for single people, but it can be, at times, complicated for married people. But, in my opinion, married people are more responsible than the single people I talked too. Some of the things the married couple I sat down and talked with named a few things that have to do with responsibility: constantly having to manage their money, shop/cook/clean, guiding their family in a Godly manner and raising their children up the right way, spend time with their children, and also make sure to spend time with their partner every evening, etc. And when I spoke to my single friends,......

Manage Your Business for Free. www.sohoos.com Simplicity is often perceived as boring, unattractive and unremarkable. Majority of people want something striking and complicated. But as Leonardo da Vinci has said, Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Different to the common belief, simplicity is not boring, unattractive or unremarkable. In fact, simplicity represents elegance and complexity. The Misconception of Being Productive The common error of people who aim to succeed at something is the tendency to make the process complicated, such as over analysis and accepting responsibility beyond one’s capacity. Take for an instance when an individual or company spends too much time planning and perfecting a product. By the time the product is completed and released in the market, competitors have already dominated it. Another example is when an individual accepts a lot of responsibility that is beyond their capacity. They think that having many work responsibilities and working long hours are marks of a productive and fulfilled life. However, being productive neither needs too much analysis nor working long hours. If only we knew how to keep things simple. The Benefits Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as...
