KEY TERMS

Electrical Circuit: A complete loop of material that conducts electricity.

Frequency: When describing energy that acts like waves, the number of times that the entire waveform repeats per second.

Amplitude: When describing energy that acts like waves, when graphing the waveform centered on the X axis, and graphing some kind of power (for example, voltage) on the Y axis, the amplitude is the maximum height of the curve over the X axis.

Phase: When describing energy that acts like waves, in a sine wave, the specific point or place in the repeating continuous wave.

Bit Time: In an encoding scheme, the time period during which the encoding scheme sends an energy signal to represent 1 bit. Encoding Scheme: A set of rules that define how to change the pattern of the waveforms of energy to represent binary 0s and 1s.

Unshielded twisted-pair (UTP): A type of cabling that uses pairs of copper wires, twisted together, with no additional shielding from the effects of EMI.

Core: In a fiber-optic cable, the glass fiber in the center of the cable over which light can pass.

Cladding: In a fiber-optic cable, the material around the core that helps direct light back into the core.

Radio Waves: Electromagnetic energy in a particular range of frequencies (per the electric spectrum), useful for encoding data in networks.

wireless WAN: A type of network that uses no wires (cables), instead using radio waves, with a wide-area network (WAN) business model of longer distances, a service provider (usually a mobile phone company), and a fee structure in which the customer pays a monthly fee to the mobile phone company.

...Chapter 2 Mind Map Chapter 2 Lab Two Extra Sources Some of the things that I have learned from searching information on chapter two are that there are way more networking systems then I have ever dreamed about. I just thought WAN stood for wide area network and was just another name for the internet. I learned that WAN is everywhere we are and imbedded in our lives. One of the biggest claims of this would be the ATM. I have used it many times but never knew that it was running off of a WAN. I also found out that WAN can be localized as well as worldwide and that it can incorporate the city you live in, the state you live in, and even the United States. Mind Mapping is a brain emulating method for generating and organizing ideas. This was inspired by a great man and his way of doing things, which was Leonardo da Vinci's and his approach to note-taking. Now that is something really cool and another reason we should have been doing something like this a long time ago. Mind mapping is more than just a simple brain storming tool, it is a tool that we can use to organize our lives, organize our jobs and our responsibilities, and it can even be used to organize our day to make us more proficient in our jobs.
