Four concepts, on the other hand, are very helpful when trying to understand Filipino behavioral patterns. These four are: amor propio or self-esteem, hiya or a sense of embarrassment, utang na loob or a deep-seated sense of obligation or gratitude, and pakikisama which is something like joining the bandwagon in order to maintain a group’s unity or camaraderie. There is a tendency to equate amor propio with either self-confidence, loss of face, social security, indolence, arrogance, or irritability because it dies, on occasion, take on one or a combination of these forms. The core or amor propio, however, is the need of the Filipino to be treated as a person, not as an object. It is a deep sense of individual and personal dignity, the violation of which he is most sensitive to. Hiya is closely related to amor propio. Hiya is a combination of feelings of inferiority, embarrassment, shyness, and alienation. Going through a feeling of hiya is a most painful experience. Nevertheless, developing the awareness for hiya is encouraged by the family because the very threat of experiencing it has proven to be an effective controlling behavior according to what is socially acceptable. That being said, I believe this generation’s fight has been for the legalization of Marijuana. Although this has been a controversy for many years now, in the more recent past there have been great strides toward legalization. The first great step was making marijuana legal for medical use, making marijuana legal for the first time since the early 1900’s. In the last year two states, Colorado and Washington, have completely legalized the drug. Marijuana should be legal because it is not harmful but helpful, could help boost the United States economy greatly, and is a very resourceful plant in multiple ways. A documentary called “The Union” goes into detail about how there has only been one experiment, done by the Untied State Government, which results made people conclude the drug indeed kills brain cells. However, managers need to be aware of certain strong Filipino characteristics, which underpin personal relationships within the country. Firstly, people are extremely careful to ensure that others do not suffer embarrassment or any sense of shame (hiya) as a result of their own actions or their inability to meet the expectations of others. It is considered to be very bad behavior to criticize another in public, as this is the greatest insult that can be given. To be openly criticized in public results in a loss of self-esteem and personal dignity. Any attack on an individual's self-esteem may have to be revenged. Therefore, managers are keen to treat subordinates with respect whilst, at the same time, maintaining the dignity of the position of boss. Point of View The case study is viewed from the point of view of Elizabeth Santos who is currently assigned of the task of designing the store management systems and procedures for all the stores of Gintong Hiyas and the management of the company's two branches.
