The Crucible Essay
The play, The Crucible, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. The trials are started by a group of girls who do not want to get in trouble for dancing and conjuring up spirits in the forest. The theme that is brought about in this play is the nature of authority. In The Crucible, many characters present various views of the nature of authority. There are three examples of this theme: The authority of the church over the lives of the villagers, the control Abigail has over the people who are accused of witchcraft and her friends in the trial, and the power of the judge over the trials.
The first example of the nature of authority is the church’s power over the villagers’ lives. The church and the everyday lives of its members are controlled by the preachers. Puritans were highly religious people. They had to live under a set of strict religious policies set forth by the church. The Puritans were governed by a theocracy, which is a form of government in which God or a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler. The Puritans in the late 1600’s believed that the preachers were the purest men on the face of the earth. Unfortunately, that is not so. As evident in the novel, even preachers can become corrupted. John Proctor puts it as “I like it not that Mr. Parris should lay his hand upon my baby. I see no light of God in that man. I’ll not conceal it.” (856). Miller proves that this is so with his depiction of Reverend Parris’s lust for power and money.
The second example of the nature of authority is the power Abigail’s influence has over her friends. Throughout the play, Abigail is seen as the primary person manipulating the other girls and the trials. She has so much authority of over the girls that she threatens to kill them if they tell the truth: “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured…...

...“#McDStories” hashtag, it expected to users to share favourite memories from the world’s largest restaurant chain. Instead, critics of the fast-food chain hijacked the hashtag and used it to pillory McDonald’s, accusing it of peddling unhealthy, unappetising food. The incident was the latest example of how well-intentioned social media marketing can backfire, putting a company on the defensive. While sites such as Facebook and Twitter provide unparalleled access to customers, allowing companies to interact with fans, they also provide a forum for dissenters. McDonald’s was monitoring the conversation on Twitter, and quickly took down its promoted tweets. “With all social media campaigns, we include contingency plans, should the conversation not go as planned,” Rick Wion, social media director for McDonald’s USA, told the FT. “The ability to change midstream helped this small blip from becoming something larger.” Yet the damage was already done, and the episode became a cautionary tale for companies. McDonald’s scored points for being quick to respond. “You need to be on it 24/7,” says Ann Lewnes, chief marketing officer at Adobe, the software company. “That’s one of the biggest changes to marketing today. You don’t just put a campaign out there. At any given moment, someone is saying something about your company and product, and you have to be listening.” Because McDonald’s was listening, it says the damage was limited, with the #McDStories parodies accounting for only 2......

Jimmy Hoffa Movie

...This seemed to be true for a lot of truck drivers in these times. A job was a job and the workers did not want to risk it and lose everything. Jimmy Hoffa ended up telling people that Ciaro and him spoke in his truck about the Union and ended up resulting in Chiaro getting fired. This was interesting and ironic because unions were trying to be enforced so the workers could be protected but talk of them would result in companies firing pro-union workers. In order to get somewhere people had to risk losing jobs and reputations. Strike, boycotts and riots would eventually leave companies with no choice but to hire union workers. Since he lost his job over the union anyways, Ciaro decided to learn more about Hoffa and what his teamsters were all about. After Hoffa’s right hand man died doing a job for the teamsters, Chiaro took his place. The rest of the movie revolves around these two men trying to make truckers become unionized. They were highly effective. In this time the CIO was created. All of Hoffa’s work eventually led to contracts being formed by organizations for workers. Also in the 1930’s the Teamsters were defined as the most powerful union group in the country. All in all I believe that this was a great movie to portray what life was like for union workers and how, although companies were anti-union, the Teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa were able to create a movement in order to get these workers contracts to work under and a better life at work....

...Abigail’s influence has over her friends. Throughout the play, Abigail is seen as the primary person manipulating the other girls and the trials. She has so much authority of over the girls that she threatens to kill them if they tell the truth: “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the pillow next to mine, and I seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!”(837). She thus starts to accuse people of witch craft. This resulted in Judge Hathorne and Deputy Governor Danforth to believe them thus resulting in the deaths of those they accuse. Abigail has a strong influence on the Salem community that when John tells the truth of having an affair with Abigail that the truth could not save Elizabeth. The third example of the nature of authority is the power and control the judge’s have over the trials. Judge Hathorne and Governor Deputy Danforth are the men called in for the trials. These judges think they are abolishing the devil, but they are really condemning innocent people and sending them to their deaths.  It seems more like they are doing the work of the devil than the work......

Jimmy Fallon Essay

...Santora 1 ! Stephen Santora Professor Van Aalst English 1A 25 March 2015 Late Night Thoughts Late-night talk shows combine pop culture, politics, and international news and present them in a facetious, lighthearted manner. Some of the subjects addressed are serious and solemn. It would seem impossible to discuss some of this material in a way not to offend or unnerve the audience but hosts such as Jimmy Fallon seem to do so with ease, and a loyal following. As the late-night talk show has changed over time so has the audience, grabbing the attention of viewers young and old alike. The Tonight Show appeals to different groups because of its ability to make light of issues that our culture faces and turns them into something that we can all laugh about together. The late-night talk show has made a name for itself in a sub-genre of its own, setting apart from the usual day time talk show. It is specifically known for its comedy oriented monologues and interviews. Characteristics of these programs include an opening monologue in which the host pokes fun of current events, comedy sketches, celebrity interviews, usually wrapped up by a musical performance by new and current artists. Unlike other interview shows, in late-night talk shows the host always sits behind a desk. This was a tradition started by the pioneers of the genre such as Johnny Carson who spent more than 30 years in his role as the host

Jimmy Carter

...In 1976 the Democratic Party chose Jimmy Carter as its nominee for president, and the American people elected him to that office over the incumbent president, Gerald Ford, bringing to a climax the most meteoric rise in modern U. S. politics. In choosing Jimmy Carter, the voters gained a president about whom they knew little and one who prided himself on being relatively unknown outside his home state of Georgia. He had never been a national candidate and had no significant experience on the national scene or any close ties to Washington. Jimmy Carter decided to run for president after his second term as governor of Georgia. (Goldfield, 2007, p.869) He sensed that the mood of the country was anti-Washington and that people were interested in a candidate who had not been associated with the Watergate scandal or with the Vietnam War. His campaign was built on moderate positions on most major issues, and he set a moral tone for the election by promising never to lie to the American people and to institute a government that was decent, compassionate, and responsible. In foreign affairs, Carter wanted to establish human rights as a tenet of American policy. (Jimmy Carter, n.d., ¶5) His frequent criticism of nations that violated basic human rights and his pleas in behalf of Soviet dissidents angered the Soviet government, which viewed the statements as intervention in its internal affairs. Despite these differences, Carter and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev signed......

Jimmy Carter

...Brooke Redington Dr. Larry Underberg UI 320- 01 5 April 2016 The Era of Bad Judgement America has had forty-four presidents since the creation of office in 1789. Each of the forty-four presidents has left both negative and positive marks on the office. Some presidents, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, are known for their great leadership and wonderful policies. Others, like Richard Nixon, may never recover from their time in the Oval office. Most Americans feel as if the biggest presidential mistakes were made during the time of the Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter administrations. Nixon cheated during his political campaign, Ford only defended Nixon and let the economy drown, and Carter was too much of a nice guy. The twelve year span of these three presidents nearly broke America. However is this completely their fault, or did they each inherit an already broken America? When Richard Nixon took office in 1969, America was in a time of change. The American people started demanding rights such as ending the draft, women’s rights, and African-American rights. Nixon was quick to realize this and honed in on ways to give the people what they wanted. In the year of 1972, Nixon was granted permission to visit the People’s Republic of China, which opened the closed diplomatic relations between the two countries. Also, in the same year Nixon initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union. Nixon was not done there, in 1973 he was able...

Jimmy Swaggart

...Jimmy Swaggart: Saint or Sinner? By: Candace Westcott Jimmy Lee Swaggart is a well known television evangelist, he has been working in the ministry since the 1950's. He is a man who brought himself from the depths of poverty and established a ministry worth millions of dollars. If this was all one knew about the man it would seem as though he was most definitely a saint, but there is more! Swaggart's ministry was rocked by not one but two sex scandals. But before we get to this saints transformation to sinner, let us first example his life leading up to this scandal. Jimmy Lee Swaggart was born in Louisiana on March 15th, 1935 to parents Minnie and Willie. Jimmy was not born into wealth although he ended up having two very famous cousins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley. Jimmy was inspired to preach the gospel from a very young age, he attended church all of his childhood along with his parents. He felt compelled to begin to preaching at the early age of 9. Jimmy was married by the time he was only 18 years old and had his first child shortly after that time. This was not uncommon back in the 1950's, getting married and having children at a young age was what everyone did. Swaggart struggled to support his family while working many odd jobs on the side of his preaching. He preached in several different areas of his home state, Louisiana. Although his family was struggling financially Swaggart believed he was living up to his calling and preaching the word of......

...sanctification…waiting on God to make us right….at our death we will be made right before God not because of what we have done but because of Jesus’s righteousness (Galations 2:20 for it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me) When God sees us on the day of judgment he sees Jesus. 6: only faith working thru love (producing love) counts…For it is by faith you have been saved 13 You were called to freedom, brothers. Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh (this is just another form of slavery) --The Christian life is the only way to resist the slavery that the world offers. Go to Ephesians 6:10-18 ( The only offensive weapon is the word of God) ( Make War video) 19: reminds us of our moral depravity! But there is a danger in a list of rules piper example: For example, if our problem is that at root we are very proud and self-sufficient people, and a moral authority like Paul tells us that kindness and faithfulness are virtues, we may very well train ourselves to do kind things and to keep our promises so that we can be proud of ourselves and feel morally self-sufficient before God and man. Then the list of virtues would not have helped us overcome our depravity at all. In fact, it would have deepened our sin, because now we prostitute the very Word of God and use it to satisfy our depraved......
