Gay Marriage: Should It Be Allowed?

Homosexuality has been a taboo existence in the past, but now it is accepted more and more across the globe. However, the institution of marriage amongst the gay community has become a controversial issue, as was interracial marriage in the past. Although there are increasing parts of the United States and the rest of the world in support of marriage equality throughout the LGBT community, there are still those who remain against it. In this paper, you will read views and information from both sides stating why gay marriage should be legalized or remain illegal from the standpoints of family, equal rights, and religion. Homosexual and bisexual behavior has been documented around the world since ancient times via art, literature, and other historical artifacts (History of Homosexuality, 2013). In fact, studies show that many people are unaware that a peer, family member, or friend is homosexual. With that being said, why should gay marriage be so controversial? Supporters of gay marriage as well as the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender) community agree that gay marriage should be legalized without stipulations. Those in civil unions are allowed to legally adopt children, but they cannot be in the hospital room when their partner passes away. It is unjust. Marriage should exist between two people who love each other, despite gender. To state one of the reasons against gay marriage is procreation is absurd. If that is the case, ‘traditional’ couples should not be allowed to marry if they cannot procreate or choose not to. Many people have changed their minds about gay marriage over the last decade. In 2003, 58% of adult Americans were opposed to gay marriage while 33% were in favor. Then in 2013, 44% of adult Americans are still opposed, but 49%…...

Should Gay Marriage Be Legal?

...Should Gay Marriage Be Legal? Why should gay marriage be legalized? Gay marriage is wrong & disrespectful to god. The institution of marriage is a tradition between a man and a woman, not two men or two women. Marriage is already threatened with high divorce rates (between 40% and 50%) and with 40.6% of babies being born to unmarried mothers. Allowing gay marriage would weaken the institution. Gay marriage could also mess up a lot of cultures, like those that believe in polygamy, which means a marriage that includes more than one partner. It could also affect other nontraditional relationships. There are also a lot of religious groups that don’t believe in gay marriage, like Christians, Catholic Churches, Islam’s, and American Baptist Churches. This may lead to churches being forced to marry couples and children being taught in school that gay marriage is the same as opposite-sex marriage. What kind of message are you setting for your children? Its one thing for a person to be homosexual, but for them to teach their children that is okay when it’s not. Those who are homosexual and are in a relationship, at some point in time want kids. When they raise this child, are they going to teach him/her right from wrong or are they going to teach him/her that it’s okay to have a relationship with someone of the same sex? Homosexual behavior is unhealthy. Even if homosexual activity was just as healthy as sex between a man and a woman, gay marriage should still be opposed......

Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized

...Andres Bermudez Prof. Ramirez English Composition II Nov 1, 2012 Should Gay Marriage be legalized? Gay marriage should be legalized because it is uncivilized and unmerited. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which homosexual people are not allowed to chase. They cannot be married to the person they love and it violates their freedoms. In a lot of states not only is gay marriage banned, but so are civil partnerships.” Others might ask why gay marriage should be legalized, but the question is this: why should other people be able to choose who marries who? If a man and a woman get married, no one seems to care. They are two people who feel affection for one another and those two people want to start a family. If we change the scenario a little bit and a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, try to get married it causes an uproar. They are not allowed to be married or raise a family together. Imagine waking up one day to a world that was completely opposite from the world we went to sleep in, meaning gay people are now straight and all straight people are now gay. Do you think the newly straight people would fight for the newly homosexual people’s rights? America is the land of the free, but we are not free to marry whomever we would like. After everything straight people have put homosexual people through, in this scenario, homosexual people would most likely vote for their......

Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage Should gay marriages be legal? Clearly we as a nation are undecided on this issue. 36 states have passed legislation banning gay marriages, yet the state of Vermont recently passed a law that allows homosexual couples the right to participate in civil unions. Some other states are also debating whether or not to allow these couples to marry. Unfortunately, the dispute has left the United States homosexual community in an awkward position. There are some people who think that gay people have no rights and should never be allowed to marry. Other people believe that gay people are just like anyone else and should enjoy the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals do. I think that the United States should allow these couples to marry just like any other couple. There are many opponents of gay people as it is, and they all have their reasons to dislike the idea of letting them get married. One of the main reasons is that the primary purpose of marriage is procreation. Because gay couples are unable to have children, they should not be allowed to marry (Schiffen 495). Another main argument is that the word marriage means the union of one man and one woman. This is a long-standing theme of most major Western religions. Under a proposed bill known as the Defense of Marriage act, marriage is defined as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.” Furthermore, it defines a spouse as “ a person of the opposite......

Furthermore in this essay I will discuss society’s views on whether Gay couples should be allowed to adopt. Nowadays many Gays couples have expressed their desire of becoming a parent, but this had developed many polemic in society as same believe, they should be allowed to adopt while others argued this would be an immoral act towards the society. In 2008 February o1 the web site http://www.writework.com/essay/should-gay-couples-allowed-adopt argued in favor stating that research have been done and “it has been proven that being a parent is not influenced by sexuality, most influential in being a great parent is providing a loving home, it hasn’t been proven that children living with Gay couples have low self-esteem”. Many famous people have also expressed their opinion to the society such as (Romney(R) in his interview on may 12 2010 should gay couples be allowed to adopt) He said that “if two people......

Third sexes are everywhere, in office, school, even in public places, but they are still treated as aliens, they were like scattering disease that no one wants to get in touch with them, they receive hatred, bullying or discrimination from other people. It’s been the talk of the town, because religions oppose to it. Same-sex marriage (also known as gay marriage) is marriage between two persons of the same biological sex or gender identity. Supporters of legal recognition for same-sex marriage typically refer to such recognition as marriage equality. The introduction of same-sex marriage has varied by jurisdiction, resulting from legislative changes to marriage laws, court challenges based on constitutional guarantees of equality, or a combination of the two. In some countries, allowing same-sex couples to marry replaced a previous system of civil unions or registered partnerships. The recognition of such marriages is a civil rights, political, social, moral, and religious issue in many nations. Conflicts arise over whether same-sex couples......

Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized

...Should Gay Marriage be legalized? “What you saw was the people of New York having a debate, talking through these issues. And I think that's exactly how things should work,” said President Obama in the news conference in June 2011. In the view of the legalization of gay marriage in New York State, this issue has been debated and remains controversial. Gay marriage has been a major social issue that even President Obama puts an eye on it, as well as the gay communities, who support this action; yet, there are different religious parties who oppose this idea too. ...Gay marriage should be legalized ? Gay marriage has been a widely debated in many countries for a long time, such as America and UK which started approving gay marriages, In 2013, homosexuals are fighting for their right to get married to someone of their same sex. There are several reasons why gay marriage should be agreed. First of all, it is a human right that every person who has the right to marry, and it is possible for everybody to show their love and affection to their beloved one. In addition, they want to marry to create a firm personal and legal foundation given by the government or the community through specific right, such as economic, taxes, and the right to make medical decisions. Gay Marriage

...numerous opinions and standing views on gay marriage. The argument regarding gay marriage should be legalized or not is extremely controversial. According to an article from the Human Rights Campaign, there is nothing wrong with allowing homosexuals to have the same rights as those who are heterosexual. Every individual person should be granted equal rights, regardless of sexuality. Gay marriage should be legalized in all states and countries, it has been held off for too long. Moreover, there are several reasons why homosexuals feel strongly about wanting to be legally married. One reason that is most commonly heard is, they want to legally show their love for each other by having a marriage license. Homosexuals want the right to marry like anybody else, and for the same reasons too. They are in love and want to spend their lives with this person. Even though it is possible to do this without being married; “they want to honor their relationship in the greatest way our society has to offer” (90). There be no reason two people cannot marry despite their sexuality. If a man and woman get to marry because they love each other, what is the difference between a man and a man or a woman and a woman wanting to marry because, they love each other? Also, another cause why homosexuals want the right to marry their spouse is because they are being cheated of rights. Although, two people love each other, if they cannot marry they are losing rights. Marriage gives both spouses......

Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized?

...has been an ongoing debate for many centuries in the United States. Majority of Americans fear homosexuality, because they do not understand it. What society needs to come to realize, is that same sex marriage is not a threat to the institution of marriage or society itself. Homosexuality has been around long enough that society should accept the homosexuals and not discriminate against them. We as human beings should look passed color, religion, or sexual preference, and see each other as the humans we are. Every human being should have the right of choice. The establishment of marriage is usually recognized as a union between a man and a woman, is this essentially accurate? What is a marriage? Several would say that it is a union between two intimate partners, typically between opposite genders. Why should marriage be restricted to that? There is no reason for marriage to be confined to a man and a woman. Will it cause grief or stress if John and Jim get married? Would Lisa and Kelly obtaining married be some kind of reason behind imminent doom? Marriage may be a legally binding union between two intimate partners; why will it matter what gender they are? Support for the previous argument comes from faith. The Bible, for instance, states that gay marriage is wrong and immoral. God apparently defines faith as a union between a man and a woman. Individuals in the U.S. believe many alternative religions and a few do not even have a faith, or believe......

Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage Gay marriage has become a big topic for the last twenty years. When it comes to gay marriage, I am not with or against, but more neutral about it. I come from a catholic family and I’ve attend church most of my life. As long as people are happy, then it shouldn’t matter how they want to live their lives. Gay marriage has been accepted in some countries and others are fallowing. There is absolutely no part of history which determines whether gay marriage should be allowed or not. There is totally no official, rational, or principal reason that gay couples cannot marry and it's very undemocratic in all ways to tell. Gay marriage should be authorized for a some reasons, a few being, it does not make any difference if two men or two women want to get married, not allowing them to wed makes them feel inferior and also violates human rights. No one likes feeling low-grade, or like they a less standards, by making gay marriage prohibited you make couples who are involved with the same sex feel lesser to others. Homosexuality is not a cognizant choice; it's something in- born. Just as you did not choose who you love, neither did they. So it is unfair to make gay marriage seem awkward when it is no dissimilar. Human rights are an issue people have tried hard to uphold over the years, banning slave trade and enforcing women rights. Homosexual groups are not supposed to be different. They need to have their human rights respected, just like women are......

Conflicting Viewpoint#Should Gay Marriage Be Legal?

...Conflicting viewpoints Name Institution Should Gay Marriage be Legal? Introduction The family is an important institution in the society. This is because it enables people to maintain the moral fabric of the society, hence keeping the nation moving. According to biblical teachings, a family comes up through marriage between a man and a woman. Once the two get married, they are to honor God’s commandment of fulfilling the earth through procreation. This aspect makes children an important, but not a must aspect of a family. This is because there are some people who cannot bear children naturally. When it comes it same sex marriages, the concept of a family loses meaning. This is because people in these marriages cannot have kids of their own. At the same time, their sexual acts are unnatural if not extremely weird to heterosexuals (Greenberg, 1993). Based on these factors, legalizing same sex marriages will definitely be destroying the moral marriage institution. Kids who are growing up will not know the importance of having a family, something that is likely to have a serious impact on the continuity of the nation’s traditions. As a result of these scenarios, I am against the idea of legalizing these marriages as they are likely to compromise the wellbeing of the society. Body Points that oppose my viewpoint Today, there are people who strongly believe that same sex marriages should be legalized. These people give various reasons to support their position. These......

Gay Marriage

...In the United States, there is a lot of controversy over the issue of gay marriage. There are constant discrepancies between adamant believers in gay marriage and the political leaders of our country. The government’s refusal of the right of the marriage of homosexuals should not be tolerated. A large portion of people in America at the moment are utterly and completely against gay marriage, however there are also those who possess a more liberal view on the situation and  feel differently towards the subject of equal treatment for all people. Religious beliefs often play a substantial role in the decision making process in many ways. For instance, Christian politicians are using their religious beliefs to impose their views and ideas upon people of their denomination. Christians believe that gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed because of the Bible entries that suggest that God made man and women for each other and that any other variation of this couple is a sin. Some feel that this country was founded on the beliefs of Christianity and therefore we should respect those ideals of our forefathers but this can no longer be the case. Our society has grown throughout the years and people have become more and more accepting of change. Every person has their own religious freedom to worship which ever God they see fitting and to believe in any cause they choose. There has been separation from church and state for many......

Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage: What’s the Problem??? “Homosexuality is not normal and should not be established as an acceptable ‘alternative’ lifestyle,’” Blount wrote. “A day is fast approaching when North Carolina will have to deal with the issue of same sex marriage.” This phrase is written across dozens of newspapers, journals, and websites. All you have to do is simply go to yahoo, type in gay marriage in North Carolina and thousands of results come up. Now you may think at first that most of these websites or links may just be talking about the approaching topic, but you would be baffled by what you actually do find. In my case the first time I searched the topic of gay marriage in this state, I was at a loss for words when the first 500 results were all against gay marriage. Such titles as “support traditional marriage” and “nogaymarriage.com” where some of the first I saw. You would have to rummage around through thousands of results before finding one moderate website that could actually tell you what was going on without putting in their own input. Gay marriage, in my opinion should be allowed. There is no strong reason for why homosexuals cannot be married. People should drop all of the political jargon and realize how they would feel if someone told them they could not marry the person they loved just because they were heterosexual. It’s easier to understand once the shoe is one the other foot. One argument heard is that same sex marriages will take away from the......
