Subnetting Examples
There are three types of subnetting examples I will show in this document:
1) Subnetting when given a required number of networks
2) Subnetting when given a required number of clients
3) Given an IP address & Subnet Mask, finding original network range (reverse engineering a subnet problem)

Subnetting Examples document created by Jeremy D. Cioara. Please do not change this document without first contacting me! Thank you!
If you have any questions, please email me at

Subnetting, Style 1 - Subnetting when given a required number of networks
Example 1: A service provider has given you the Class C network range Your company must break the network into 20 separate subnets.
Step 1) Determine the number of subnets and convert to binary

In this example, the binary representation of 20 = 00010100.

Step 2) Reserve required bits in subnet mask and find incremental value

The binary value of 20 subnets tells us that we need at least 5 network bits to satisfy this requirement
(since you cannot get the number 20 with any less than 5 bits – 10100)
Our original subnet mask is (Class C subnet)
The full binary representation of the subnet mask is as follows: = 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000

We must “convert” 5 of the client bits (0) to network bits (1) in order to satisfy the requirements:
New Mask = 11111111.11111111.11111111.11111000

If we convert the mask back to decimal, we now have the subnet mask that will be used on all the new networks –
Our increment bit is the last possible network bit, converted back to a binary number:
New Mask = 11111111.11111111.11111111.1111(1)000 – bit with the parenthesis is your increment bit. If you convert this bit to a decimal number, it becomes the number „8‟

Step 3) Use increment to find network ranges

Start with your given…...

Fruit Flies

...The Genetics of Fruit Flies can be Used to Understand Human Genetics Introduction: A gene is the functional and physical unit of heredity passed from parent to offspring. Genotype and phenotype are products of the different genes that one inherits. Genotype is the genetic constitution of an organism or cell. The observable physical and/or biochemical characteristics of the expression of a gene are the phenotypes (Genetics Home Reference 2013). A monohybrid cross is for a single trait when different alleles are combined through mating. A dihybrid cross calls focuses on two traits. Alleles on the sex chromosomes result in sex linked traits. In this experiment, multiple generations of Drosophilia melanogaster were examined and their hereditary traits analyzed. My hypotheses is that the traits will end up in a 1:1 ratio. The goal of this experiment was to note the traits of the fruit flies and how they relate to human genetics. Section Fri Tables F2 Generation Predictions Results Eye Color Wings Half Red, Half White Half winged, Half Not All Red All Males had Wings Materials and Methods: A parental generation of the fruit flies was obtained. Then 10 flies, 5 of each gender, of the F1 generation were obtained from the parent generation. Then 50-60 members of the F2 generation were obtained. At each stage, gender, eye color and wings were examined using a dissecting microscope after the flies were knocked out by FlyNap. Next, in the large petri dishes,......

Fruit Essay

...I picked up the notice of this assignment late in the day and not with much time to put five minutes of thought into it before entering into a two and a half hour Business calculus lecture, which was a complete strain on the neural pathways. I left tired and a little confused but with intent – I was going to find my fruit specimen and I got a little excited. I jumped into my truck and after picking up a burrito for dinner, I headed straight for home. Auto-pilot had kicked in, with tiredness and food on the mind there was only one destination, luckily a sign from the heavens appeared. A giant, glowing, red Vons supermarket sign, that awoke me from my transient state. A total blessing, as I would have been completely fruitless otherwise. Entering the store, I thought about the type of fruit I wanted to peruse for this essay. I was thinking something tropical, exotic, different and exciting. I was feeling intense inspiration from the fruit I was inventing, when I happened to pass an apple stand. Completely different from the extravagance held in my mind’s eye and you might be thinking “how obvious and boring”. However, one apple stood out. Its color patterns intrigued me, almost hypnotizing in its appearance and I knew instantly it was the one. Arriving home, I dropped my bags by my bed and ran through a quick mental list of the best places to do this intense study of the object and I. The ideal spot needed to be quiet and free from distractions. My bedroom was just too......

Vegetables and Fruits

...VEGETABLES AND FRUITS INTRODUCTION: High intakes of fruits and vegetables are protective against many forms of cancers. Vegetarians are less likely to contract cancer of the colon than meat eaters. A vegetarian diet is typically high in fibre, low in saturated fat and includes plenty of fruit and vegetables. Dietary fibre may help to protect against all the ‘Western’ cancers such as cancers of the colon, rectum, prostate, uterus and breast. We all know that fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and nuts are healthy. There are a number of studies that show that consuming more of these plant-based foods reduces the risk for a long list of chronic maladies (including coronary artery disease, obesity, diabetes, and many cancers). This is probable factor in increased longevity in the industrialized world. On average, we eat two fruits and vegetables and too much saturated fats of which meat and dairy are prime contributors. A predominantly vegetarian diet may have beneficial effects for kidney and nerve function in diabetics, as well as for weight loss. Eating more fruits and vegetables can slow, and perhaps reverse, age-related declines in brain function and in cognitive and motor performance at least in rats. However, low protein diets associated with vegetarians, reduce calcium absorption and have a negative impact on skeletal health. Vegetarians’ avoidance of meat, eggs and dairy products can lead to deficiencies in iron, calcium and Vitamin B12. Infants who are......

Fruits and Vegetables

...Fruits and Vegetables Throughout my adolescence I have been told that fruits and vegetables are essential to a quality health. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” or “It is important to eat your veggies to grow big and strong.” Although these foods contribute to a good health, they also differ in many ways. There are distinct requirements that allow a fruit to be a fruit, and a vegetable to be a vegetable, and the tastes and usage of these foods often bear no resemblance with each other. Before I proceed, I feel it is necessary to clarify any common misconception about fruits and vegetables that were brought up throughout my research. The tomato, thought to be a vegetable by many, as well as myself, is actually not, it is a fruit. The pumpkin and avocado also fall into the category of a fruit ("Did you know fruit facts".) These false impressions result in the mistaken identity in countless fruits and vegetables. A fruit is the ripened ovary of a flowering plant, often sweet and fleshy ("Fruits vs Vegetables"). On most accounts, fruits are foods that are consumed for dessert or as a snack. For example: apple pie, a banana split, or a strawberry shortcake, all of which are desserts with ingredients that require the use of fruit ( The majority of fruits taste rather sweet due to a simple sugar called fructose. However, fructose is not the only element found in fruits. For a fruit to truly be a fruit, it must contain seeds. Some examples of......

...meats, fish, poultry, fruits and vegetables. Employees will be trained on stocking, storing, rotating, and how to keep the shelves appealing to the eye. Personally, I like the idea of fresh fruit and vegetables on the shelves. I think everyone does. Where I shop, I have seen shriveled zucchini. I have seen berries with mold on them. I have seen oranges that have completely lost its shape and color because of negligence from the produce manager and their employees. This is disappointing to anyone who enjoys fresh fruits and vegetables. Produce managers are expected to keep the shelves fully stocked to please their bosses, which ultimately forces them to keep bad food on the shelves because they do not have the stock to replenish the shelves. Any consumer who has food stamps would easily result to buying unhealthier foods if all the store has is old fruits and vegetables.  While this idea does seem attractive, the goal might be unattainable. The USDA might not be successful because the idea seems to conform to a demand that isn't there. Food stamps households do not demand fresh fruits and vegetables as much as unhealthier foods. If farmers are supplying more fruits and vegetables and keeping the shelves full with fresh-pick leafy greens and crisp apples to comply with government interference in consumer choices, the prices for those goods will surely go up. Not only will the prices for these goods go up, there will be a lot of waste. To keep fresh fruits and vegetables on......

Strange Fruit

...STRANGE FRUIT AND ITS IMPACT ON THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA DeVry University Submitted to Professor Scott Gessford December 17, 2014 HUMN 303: Introduction to the Humanities INTRODUCTION Southern trees bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black body swinging in the Southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant South, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh, And the sudden smell of burning flesh! Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop, Here is a strange and bitter crop. By Lewis Allan, 1940 These words paint a picture and speak of an unpleasant time in American history, where blatant racism, lynchings and inequalities were committed against African Americans. Strange fruit can be considered a protest song of the pre-civil rights era. Its importance to the movement can be felt in the lyrics of the song paving the way for protest songs of the civil rights era and its impact on the world today. Strange Fruit was composed by Abel Meerpol, a school teacher from the Bronx, NY who wrote a poem under the pseudonym Lewis Allan (Independent Lens, 2003) about the horrors of racism after seeing graphic photos of a lynching of two teenagers, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. These teenagers, who were accused of killing a white man, were taken from an Indiana jail and lynched...

Strange Fruit

...Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday Initial reactions to the work This song, by Billie Holiday, was made famous with its dark meaning and the astounding performance that was brought forwards. With nothing more than a fine piano, a few brass instruments, and the haunting pain heard in Ms. Holiday’s voice, this piece of music was truly a gem of modernism. Billie Holiday did an amazing job with the simulation of pure distraught that was easily conveyed to me. The sense of sadness and lamentation is truly genuine and the tone can only be recreated by Lady Day herself. Historical context Holiday’s piece of music was released at the end of the American Great Depression, which resulted from a crash in the stock market, causing a deep depression in the economy for the following ten years to come. During this time, unemployment rates skyrocketed out of control and people began to lose their homes and most of their possessions. This period of time was a clear contrast to the previous decade and the wealth that came from the 1920s. However, this proved to not be a complete detriment to the arts. The music industry had almost arrived at a full collapse, but this era in American history helped pave the way for jazz and blues to become a new light in otherwise dark times (Ward, 2000). Black musicians were arguably some of the most influential people during this time, with men and women like Louie Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn, Duke Ellington, and of course, Billie Holiday herself. Artistic......

The Forbiden Fruit

...The Forbidden Fruit Actor - Ralph Fiennes Actress – Rosario Dawson Many of us know Ralph Fiennes better as the alter ego of Tom Riddle, the evil Lord Voldemort. That is one of the many reasons why I have chosen him as Hades, considering his role in Harry Potter. In Harry Potter Ralph Fiennes played a character who took many lives of innocent people. This is why I have chosen him as Hades because Hades was the god of the underworld who controlled the dead and was feared by many. The second reason why I picked Ralph Fiennes as Hades is because he has acted as a villain in many movies so I believe it will be easier for him to get into the character of Hades. In his interview he had stated that when he is acting he is not himself anymore and he said that he loves the sense of being someone else. The third reason why I chose him as Hades is because of his calm facial expression which seems almost stoic. Hades is described as an intimidating and cruel being who expresses no feeling towards others despite being surrounded with dead souls begging for another chance at life, he stays impassive. The first reason I have chosen Rosario Dawson as Persephone is because of her pervious role as Persephone in Percy Jackson and the lightning thief. She had portrayed a woman who was unafraid of her surrounds and was fearsome as the queen of the underworld. Rosario Dawson has filmed many movies where she has had to play a character who leads a tough life. So I thought that she would......
