From Blind Date to Almost Married

Hands trembling with the fear of rejection as I turn the key of my 2013 Chrysler 200. I could feel my heart pounding deep in the pit of my stomach. I drove with anticipation to the meeting place, our blind date. I pulled over several times. Thinking to myself, I can’t do this, I cannot be rejected. I pulled back into traffic and drove to the Hard Times club where we had discussed meeting only hours before. I stepped out of the car and took a deep breath, walked up to the door and pulled the door open and that’s where it all began. This was the day that went from blind date too soon to be married. Let’s go back to where it all began. Amanda my best friend of 15 years suggested that I join an online dating site. She had met her husband on Plenty of Fish the service was free, so I really had nothing to lose. I joined, set up a profile, added pictures and almost immediately started receiving emails from all the fish out there. I received a notice that Thomas had viewed and liked my profile. I scrolled through his public profile and checked out his pictures I thought he was pretty handsome, so I sent him back a notification of interest. We exchanged a few emails before finally deciding it would be easier to text. After just a few days of chatting online and through text we decided to meet, in public, and have a drink. I opened the door of the bar; he was standing next to the pool table. I took a deep breathe, swallowed the huge knot of fear coupled with excitement that had formed in my throat. He was wearing a blue mustang t-shirt which by the look of it was also a work shirt. His shirt was worn and stained from what I would later find out was the remnants of his job at a plastic molding factory. He wore a white OSU Cowboys ball cap, which for me was a major plus since I am a huge OSU Cowboys fan. As I approached the pool…...

Married or Not

...Married or not… you should read this. Marriage. “When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes. Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why? I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her! With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now. The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing...

Blind Obedience

...Name: Andraie Lewis Eng. 122 May 8,2013    Blind obedience   Society often view obedience as a good quality or trait to have; employers want obedient employees and parents often wish for obedient children. Being obedient means that an individual shows respect for an authority figure and will carry out the instructions they are given; when someone is obedient they are widely accepted by society, because they do whatever it is that society asks of them. But obedience carried too far can have disastrous consequences to both the individual and society; this is referred to as blind obedience.  Blind obedience is when a person follows authority without even thinking about the consequences that the order to which they are obeying carries. It’s as if the authority figures are puppeteers and the people blindly obeying them the puppets. Puppeteers and their puppets best illustrate the relationship between the authority figure and the people doing horrendous actions, because being obedient is the right thing to do. So many events in history have proven how inhumane human beings can be when following authority. Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University, conducted one of the most controversial experiments in history, in attempt to demonstrate how individuals can lose themselves to an authority figure. Milgram’s experiment was called “Obedience to Authority.”   Theodore Dalrymple wrote an article titled, “Just do......

Nike Sets Date to Eliminate Toxic Chemicals from Supply Chain

...Article: Nike sets date to eliminate toxic chemicals from supply chain This article was posted after disapprovals from environmental campaigners, as they were complaining about clothing brands such as Nike and its group. The campaigners complained about hazardous chemicals being disposed into Chinese rivers, these chemicals were used in the manufacturing process and released on the rivers afterwards. However, the clothing group, which includes the Nike, Cole Haan, Converse, Hurley, and Umbro brands, reacted to this disapproval and stated they will immediately work with their contract factories to prevent this matter. Nike stated to work on this environmental issue within its supply chain and have an action plan in the next two months using their resources; the company also invited other companies to collaborate in this action plan in order to expand it. As a result they got a rival sport company to immediately react, Puma. After acknowledging this matter, Puma decided to also remove hazardous chemicals from the product making of their goods and promised to get this done by 2018. In conclusion, Greenpeace wanted these very popular brands to create a toxic-free future and build a better environment, to stop using hazardous chemical to make their products and dispose them into Chinese rivers subsequently. In fact they got Puma to make a enormous modification in their manufacturing processes, they later stated they would go toxic-free, no more usage of hazardous chemical were...

Disastrous Dates

...DISASTROUS DATES There was this time I went out on a blind date. OK, not totally blind, because I'd met this guy on the Internet, and had sort of seen pictures. I thought it was a bit weird that when we were corresponding the guy kept on asking how tall I was, making a real big deal out of it. In one email he said he even got out a measuring tape to convert (I only knew in cm's and he only knew in feet). Well my question was answered when I arrived (a bit late) at the fancy restaurant he had booked for us - he was tiny. OK, not that I have a problem with short guys, but I'm short for a woman, and he wasn't much taller. That and the fact that the guy was old enough to be my grandfather - early 60's at least - I was in my early 20's. In emails prior to meeting up he'd said he was older, but didn't give out any specifics. I quite like older men, so it wasn't really something on the forefront of my mind, and I just assumed he'd be in the age category I had specified in my profile criteria. Well, let me just say this, there's older men and then there's just old. And this also has a lot to do with how much a guy looks after himself, his dress sense, his outlook on life etc. Well my question was answered when I arrived (a bit late) at the fancy restaurant he had booked for us - he was tiny. OK, not that I have a problem with short guys, but I'm short for a woman, and he wasn't much taller. Policy Reform on Population Growth in Nigeria from 1999 Till Date

...1. Introduction Nigeria nation’s population increased faster over time but determining the country’s figure has always bring issues since independence due to some reasons such as fear of domination by other ethnic groups, revenue allocation, religious and politics. However available statistics shows overall people in Nigeria were estimated 178.52 million persons in 2015 from 45.2 million in 1960 which indicates an increase 395 per cent in the last fifty years (NBS, 2015). The overall figures of the nation indicate 2.35 percent of the world’s total figures which invariably shows that a person in every 43 human being on the earth surface is a citizen of Nigeria. The country’s population figure has been described as youthful in which about 44 percent of Nigerians were the age 15 as at 2004 which indicates high dependence ration. The high fertility rate which led to having high number of young persons who are future parents constitutes an unstoppable momentum for growth is built into mainstream of the population. This has a lot of implications on quality of life, resources available for social services including education, health as well as economic growth and employment opportunity. In response of the challenges posed by Nigeria rapid population, the need for preventive check as postulated by Robert Malthus (1882) arose in order to ensure balance population growth and available resources and this necessitated her participation in international gatherings. According to......

Blind Is Not Enough

...Ariel Johnson CRTW 187 Final Project Blind Is Not Enough Dear Doctor Pritchard, I am sad to inform you that these are my final hours. I believe it my duty to tell you, my most loyal doctor—and though it may not be appropriate—I dare to call you my dear friend. I have come to conclusion that my life must end today. This may come as a surprise to you, I’m sure, but there is nothing left for me now. I suppose you would be wondering why? I fear I have not been entirely truthful with you, though, I assure you my dishonesty was not always on purpose, as you will see. You see, there are parts of my life’s story I have left out of our sessions and I believe it is time you learned the truth, as have I. My name is not John Hatchet but rather Julio Antonio Hernandez-Bulkeley de a Villa Llorando Tortuga. My mother, born Mary Marie Bulkeley, a woman of Welsh descent, met my father Marceliano Estévan Hernandez, an Argentinean, in Peru. My father was on business and my mother was said to be on a church trip to help the homeless. My mother had been wandering through the market place when she quite literally ran into my father. As my father tells it, “I felt her sweet hand brush against my wrist, just below my gold watch, and I knew at that moment I never wanted her to leave my sight again.” My father took her back to live with him on his cattle ranch and that is where I raised, knee deep in manure, from the day I was born until the age of thirteen. This you know to be true, in part. I......

...Clark – IELTS Speaking The Speaking Test in China 1. Chinese Performance and the Reason 1.1. Chinese Performance As an IELTS examiner, I tested speaking candidates in most Chinese cities. I have often heard stories about candidates in certain cities getting higher scores than others, for example, ―Candidates in Beijing get higher scores than candidates in Wuhan.‖ This is actually an ―IELTS myth‖ and there is no truth in this theory. In reality, there is a nationwide trend of score averages and although some tests may contradict this trend on certain dates, the scoring average is quite consistent. On average, 15~20% of candidates score below 5 (mostly 4); 60% of candidates score 5; 15~20% of candidates score 6; less than 5% score 7; a very small number of candidates score 8 or 9. (In my 5 year career of IELTS testing in China, which covered around 4,000 interviews I did not award a single speaking 9!) From these numbers we can make the assumption that in general, Chinese candidates find it quite easy to score 5, but there are clearly some problems with scoring 6, 7 and 8. I always begin a new IELTS speaking class by asking my students what score they need for speaking and the response is usually: 40% need a speaking score of 6; 60% need a speaking score of 7; Clearly, most candidates are scoring below their required score in the speaking test. We can assume part of the problem rests in their preparation for the speaking test because most candidates......

Paradise of the Blind

...In Paradise of the Blind Duong Thu Huong Has created a touching portrayal of three women fighting to maintain their dignity in a society that expects them to make sacrifices and be subservient to men .Paradise of the Blind is beautiful journey through a Vietnam landscape and culture. Duong Thu Huong impresses and captivates the reader with her ability to evoke the colours, the foods, the smells, and the age-old rituals of her country. The novel’s plot revolves around Hang, a young woman forced to grow up too fast in the slums of Hanoi and the turbulence of modern Vietnam. Duong Thu Huong brilliantly captures Hang's rebellious attitude towards her mother and the despair and loneliness of her search for self identity. On the other hand Hang’s mother is seen watching powerless, as her life is shattered by a fanatical political campaign led by her own brother. And there is the mysterious Aunt Tam, who is wealthy and bitter in equal parts and seeks to pass on both to her niece, Hang. Throughout the text we find symbolism of food. A symbol is an object, image, or action that is conventionally understood to represent something else. Food is particularly powerful as a symbol because it is associated to everyday life. Food fulfils physical as well as emotional and psychological needs; it may be intentionally utilized as a symbol in Paradise of the Blind. Since food engages all the senses, it tends to evoke strong sensory and emotive as well as cognitive associations. This range of......

The Blind Side

...Sociological Perspective of the Blind Side Social problems within our society continue to arise. In an ideal world, it is appropriate to say that as individuals we all wish to live life in peace. Unfortunately, getting a whole nation to come to a consensus is nearly impossible. Social problems are controversial societal or behavioral related issues, which can affect the environment, people and social institutions (Leon-Guerrero 2013). These social problems can range from global concerns to racial issues such as discrimination and through our sociological imagination we are able to differentiate problems using our own discretion (Leon-Guerrero 2013). Choosing a movie to analyze from a sociological perspective was an interesting experience because you become aware of the many social problems that were always there and never paid attention to. The movie "The Blind Side" is a great example, which highlights the three main social problems that will be analyzed and interwoven in this paper: social class and poverty, education, and alcohol and drug abuse. "The Blind Side" is based on a true story, outlining Michael Oher’s life from an impoverished child to a successful athlete with the help of the Tuohy Family. The Tuohy family took Michael in and ended up adopting him. Michael came from a broken home, growing up in the inner city of Memphis, Tennessee with a mother who was a drug addict and an absentee father. After running away from several foster homes, Michael was......

Married Couple?

...Should Couples Live Together Before Married? As I grew up in my mother house it was instilled in me that you should never live with a man unless you’re married and since that was strongly installed in me that is what I live by I didn’t have the chance to live together with my husband while we were dating. It was difficult during our first year of marriage. We argued a lot, mostly for reasons like leaving clothes on the floor in the bathroom and not cleaning up after his self. Living together before making our vows would have reassured us about the lifelong commitment and basically letting us see what we were getting are self into. From my own experience, I believe that couples should live together before getting married, so they can start to know each other on a closer, more personal level and also see how compatible they are with each other. When you live together with your partner you start to know each other on a closer more personal level. For starters you learn what your partner likes and dislikes, I think there’s a lot to find out about your partner and from your partner; and I think the only way to do this is move in together. For example I didn’t know my husband liked to watch porno videos or sleep with the house freezing cold! Believe it or not, its little details like these that can often make or break a relationship. Second, you learn what kind of bad habits you and your partner have and whether or not you can get rid of them or live with all the bad habits.......
