America’s Cash Crop

“Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?”
― Bill Hicks The legalization of marijuana is a debate being held all over the country. Everyone has their own opinion on the whole idea of marijuana. There are legislators who think that if marijuana is legalized that it will be grown illegally, and medically abused. There are potheads who think it would be cool and that they would get cheaper weed. But what it comes down to are the numbers. Marijuana is a cash crop. How can Wisconsin say no to numbers like fourteen billion, and thirty five billion dollars? Can legalizing marijuana rescue Wisconsin’s economy? Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington. In seventeen states, and DC it is legal to have at least an ounce of marijuana. In fourteen of them it is legal to even have plants (ProCon). Should Wisconsin be state number eighteen? NBC News produced an article Marijuana Called US Cash Crop and within that article they state “The study estimates that marijuana production, at a value of $35.8 billion, exceeds the combined value of corn ($23.3 billion) and wheat ($7.5 billion).” Wisconsin is in forty six billion dollars of debt and increasing every second (WisconsinDebtClock). If marijuana can bring in millions of dollars a year, why not legalize it? It would significantly decrease our debt problem. Not only would legalization bring in money for Wisconsin but it would also decrease spending. ...very biased. I believed that writers had to follow a certain format and stick to the textbook rules in order to succeed as a creative writer. This notion of mine was completely shattered, and for the good, once I was introduced to the fact that a creative writer is in essence not bound by any rules. Don’t get me wrong, there are certain rules, but these rules are nowhere nearly as strict as the rules I experienced during my stint with formal literary writing. More than the rules, I uncovered several tools that would aid my writing process in the future. Experimenting with the five elements of creative writing - Image, Voice, Character, Setting and Story provided me with a firm fundamental understanding as to how I should begin crafting my portfolio. It was very interesting to discover how each of these elements worked independently as well as coherently within each of the four genres to provide a well rounded work of literature. Among the four genres, I was most comfortable with writing the Drama. Integrating all the necessary elements of creative writing into the drama came naturally to me as I could visualize the drama actually taking place on stage. The fact that all of my characters’ thoughts had to be externalized as opposed to fiction where I could go into my characters’ thoughts and not worry about the reader’s reaction proved to be an exciting challenge. Sue recognised that I was competent in my practice as I had worked with her on previous occasions with adults and consequently praised me. Much of the culture of the Upper Paleolithic people remains unknown to modern day humans. Remnants of these people’s past can be found displayed across walls and crafted into figurines within caves throughout Western Europe. The fine art crafted by these people is impressive and reflective of their intellect. Most of the artwork found belonging to this time period depicts animals or mythical beasts. Upper Paleolithic societies had some kind of relationship with animals and studying these relationships can provide interesting information about different Upper Paleolithic cultures. Kenneth Feder, Amy Paterson and Patricia Rice, Michael Balter, and Nicholas Conrad all discuss possible implications of the artwork in their respective writing.
