ll high school students and international equivalents are invited to submit an essay about the recent effects and future promises of science in our society. Write about particular discoveries, events, or persons from science in current events or present a more general account of the changes and developments. Each essay must be accompanied by a statement of acknowledged validity by a teacher in the field of the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Students must submit their essays and entry forms electronically on or before the contest deadline of September 30th, 2013.

Students who have family members affiliated with the Journal, or serving as contest judges are not eligible to participate.

2013 ISEC Prompt:

Scientific dilemmas today occur on a global stage and require international cooperation. Please choose one pressing scientific issue and explain: the problem as it exists today, the point it can reach before action must be taken, some potential courses of action to combat the problem, and the global implications of solving or avoiding the issue.

Topic suggestions include, but are not limited to: alternative energy sources, global climate change, increased rate of species extinction, and development of extreme weather conditions. Note that judges look favorably on unique topics.

No literary form other than an essay will be accepted.
Each essay must reflect the contestant’s own writing and original thinking.
No graphs, images, or illustrations should be included in the essay
Awards:

The author of the winning essay will receive a $500 monetary award in addition to having their winning essay published in the Fall 2013 print issue of Journal. In addition, three runner-ups will be selected. The winning and runner-up essays will be featured on the Journal website at http://dujs.dartmouth.edu/.

...Civil Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence. The earliest practices of Civil engineering may have commenced between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq) when humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter. During this time, transportation became increasingly important leading to the development of the wheel and sailing. Until modern times there was no clear distinction between civil engineering and architecture, and the term engineer and architect were mainly geographical variations referring to the same person, often used interchangeably. The construction of Pyramids in Egypt (circa 2700-2500 BC) might be considered the first instances of large structure constructions. In the 18th century, the term civil engineering was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to military engineering. The first engineering school, The National School of Bridges and Highways, France, was opened in 1747. The first self-proclaimed civil engineer was John Smeaton who constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse. In 1771, Smeaton and some of his colleagues formed the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers, a group of leaders of the profession who met informally over dinner. Though there was evidence of some technical meetings, it was little more than a social society. ...Why I want to be an Engineer There have been different reasons at different stages of my life why I developed a passion for the engineering profession. It started from a youthful age watching my father, who was a mechanical engineer and wanting to emulate him when I got to adulthood. I liked the way he talked about his occupation with great excitement. He tended to travel a lot but also had time to spend with his family. I was impressed with his knowledge of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He was always helping my older brother with his calculus assignments even though he had been through school for a long time. The engineering profession afforded my father with the resources to provide for his family and to do some philanthropic work as well. There was always something technological being discussed with his friends. In my early years when I wanted to be an engineer, it was always because I just wanted to be like my father, not until I got into school. When I started school, I realized I was very interested in mathematics and the sciences. The tougher the subject, the greater satisfaction I had at the end of the term when I succeeded. I loved working in the science labs and learning how science works. Some of this popularity can be attributed to the success that the semi-structured data model has had in environments where the relational data model has been insufficiently expressive. It is thus natural to consider native XML databases, which are designed from the ground up to support XML data. Developing a native XML database introduces many challenges, some of which we consider here. The first major problem is that XML data is ordered, whereas relational databases operate on set-based data. We examine the ordering problem in great detail in this thesis, and show that while it imposes an unavoidable performance penalty on the database, this penalty can be reduced to an acceptable level in practice. We do this by making use of type information, which is often present in XML data, and by improving existing results in the literature. XML data is frequently queried using XPath, a de facto standard query language. ...in engineering, ethical issues occur almost all the time. these issues include obstacles that may or may not be intentional. as engineers we need the mathematics and sciences we take the time to learn, then we use the materials to solve these problems effectively and accurately to make life easier. i couldn't imagine how difficult it would be to build a real tower considering how difficult it was making a wooden one. during the process of building this tower, i had to design and draw to exact measurement a tower that i believed would be strong enough to withstand more weight than the rest of the towers created by my classmates. that was the easy part. i then had to cut the pieces of wood i would need for each wall to the exact size then frame it and glue it all together four times until they dried, using my geometry skills to make forty-five and ninety degree angle cuts. After the waiting process was over i then created another part of the tower called the beams which is basically extra support for the tower. I used a basic double V design to allow maximum strength for the tower and i did this nine times, three for each floor. I then had to pin the entire tower together, slide the beams in, glue the beams while they were in the tower, and place triangular floors while it was still drying. so after all the hard work was done, i simply finished gluing all the walls together and then i added a coating of super glue to the tower and i was finished. Equipment’s fails because certain parts of it fail first and that prevents the whole process from working. It is important to understand the problem before any maintenance. There are a lot of reasons it could fail because of the age of the equipment and parts need to be changed or if the equipment vibrates nuts and bolts can be loosen and parts can fall apart. When this happens the machine needs to be stopped and maintained. Age is very important if the machine has been used for a very long time the efficiency and the quality wouldn’t be as good as a new one, a machine has a certain life span for example on a car the timing belt must be replaced after every 50,000 miles. Wear could lead to a fault in a machine because parts come into contact with each other for example a cars break pad. Corrosion in certain materials takes longer than others like aluminium, when a part of a machine corrodes it degrade and can cause failures. Raw materials such as oil and compressed air can run equipment’s. If something different unwanted to the equipment is in it, it can affect the way the machine works.
