The Washington Post is the most read paper in the Washington Metropolitan area. The paper is a voice in the City which has a significant level of power that shapes public opinion and attitudes. The attitudes are form during, and after reading a topic which can have a range which includes sports, metro, style, business and the obituaries. Katherine Graham was once known as the most powerful woman in America. She was the daughter of bank owner, Eugene Meyer who purchase the Washington Post in 1933 for $1 Million dollars. Katherine worked at the Washington Post during her summers learning to be a reporter, until she joined the editorial staff of the Post. In 1940, she married Philip L. Graham and during the course of their marriage Katherine’s father sold the paper to the Grahams for one dollar. Under the tenure of Mr. Graham the Washington Post purchase other competitive newspaper companies. In 1963 Mr. Graham committed suicide and Katherine took over the reigns of the Washington post. The Washington post paper cost only .50 cents and generates revenues for each newspaper anywhere from $5000 to $7000 for each paper from the advertisements which include the obituaries, employment section and store advertisements. The basis for Katherine Graham’s power was being the CEO of the Washington Post, which some considered the most powerful information sources in the United States.

Institutional Investors

...Executive Summary The report captures the role of institutional investors in corporate governance. The relationship that exists between an institutional investor and a public company forms the experimental setting of the report. The government exists as the regulating authority for the different players in the market, however, the players at times deviate from the blueprint set out by the regulating authority because of the changing circumstances. Because of this, the authors of “Performance of Institutional Trading Desks: An Analysis of Persistence in Trading Costs” set out to examine data on both Institutional trading desks and their brokers. The authors examine a large data set, created with 48 million tickets, containing stock identifiers, which allow for gathering other relevant data such as stock prices and volume at the time of the trades as well as the names of the institutions and the brokers involved in the transactions. The authors measure trading cost by the execution shortfall, a comparison of “the execution price with a benchmark price that is observed when the trading desk sends the ticket to the broker” (Performance, 559). Trading desks are then sorted into quintiles based on execution shortfall in the portfolio formation month. The authors then control for economic determinants of trading costs to ensure that data is comparable across different economic cycles. They then examine the relationship between trading costs and institutions abnormal holding period returns to determine whether institutions with high trading costs are those that are sacrificing trading cost for the opportunity take advantage of valuable private information. And at the private institutions we studied, there is a pronounced upward slope to the relationship between the probability of being admitted and the socioeconomic status of one's family. When one considers the positive economic rate of return of a college education—and especially of a degree from a name-brand institution—it is easy to see how selective private higher education confers, concentrates, and consolidates privilege for students who have grown up in well-to-do circumstances. How that happens is illuminated by following a cohort of students through the process from college application to admission, matriculation, and graduation. More than half of all applicants to selective colleges come from upper-middle- or upper-class families. By the time of graduation, the proportion has risen to 60 percent. The general understanding of institutions can be defined as a set of formal and informal rules of conduct, made by humans that facilitate coordination or govern relationships between individuals, organizations or government. Examples of institutions include laws, regulations, customs, social and professional norms, culture, and ethics. Selznick (1949) notes that "the most important thing about organizations is that, though they are tools, each nevertheless has a life of its own". While he acknowledges rational view that organizations are designed to attain goals, he notes that the formal structures can never conquer the non-rational dimensions of organizational behaviour. Individuals do not act purely based on their formal roles. Organizations do not act purely based on formal structures. Selznick notes that individuals bring other commitments to the organization that can restrict rational decision-making. For example inmates with values, attitudes, experiences, and social norms that tend towards violent behaviour towards other people will be more likely to engage in interpersonal violence than inmates with less violent personalities and experiences.
