Summary of Findings

The Professor felt ill and decided to go home but during the drive he experienced discomfort and in the succeeding hours experienced severe diarrhea and persistent nausea and vomiting. Eventually the nausea ceased but his stomach was still upset. The following day he called Dr. Martin, his primary health care physician. Betty, the doctor’s nurse assisted him over the phone and after the professor explained his condition she told him that Dr. Martin cannot see to him because of his packed schedule. The professor asked for a referral to go to the HealthCheck Clinic but the nurse declined claiming that Dr. Martin is not willing to send him there and was instead prescribed with medicine for the diarrhea. The prescription was placed in the pharmacy for the professor to pick up. Unsatisfied, the professor called up Candy, the director of the Employee Benefits Office, but Wendy picked up and relayed everything to Candy who then expressed her surprise and distress over the situation. She too did not understand that the request for a referral was denied as the professor asked for it.

The professor picked up the medicine from the pharmacy, drove home, took a pill, and went to bed. The following day the diarrhea was under control but the gastric discomfort was still a problem. He decided to go to work but in the afternoon he gave up and went home. He called Dr. Martin’s office and once again Betty answered the phone. She informed him that the doctor is out all afternoon and still claimed that the doctor refuses to refer him to HealthCheck. Betty believed that Dr. Martin would want the professor to go to the emergency room. Beyond irritated, the professor decided to go to HealthCheck himself without a referral to figure out what was wrong with him. ...Doctor In kindergarten, my class was asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Crayons danced across sheets of paper to illustrate our dream occupations. Our drawings were hung in the hallway for our parents to see at Back to School Night. I remember looking down the line and seeing pictures of ballerinas dancing, firefighters putting out a blaze, and astronauts leaping across the moon, careers that were seen as typical dreams of five year olds. My picture showed a girl throwing a ball in the air, being a professional athlete, but as you can see my point of view of my future has changed. This international medical humanitarian organization was established in 1971 by doctors and journalist. There are several reasons MSF provides medical aid to those in need. Epidemics, malnutrition, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare are some of the reasons the MSF would provide help. The organization also advocates in situations where issues are neglected. The MSF reserves the right to bring attention to any situation that the organization sees as abuse or neglect. MSF operates independently and are separate from any political, military, or religious affiliations, and remains neutral. The MSF evaluates certain areas to determine how great of a need there is in that particular area before opening a program. Since the MSF operates independently, funding for the organization comes from private, non-government sources. In 2009, MSF had 3.8 million individual donors and private funders worldwide. It is ok Jack, I have always wanted to slit your throat…now I have the chance to do just that. To Jack, it is very much a boys game sort of like a clique and if colleagues do not play the game his way, colleagues do not get respect. Jack has his “guys”, the ones whose back he covers and vice versa then he has his colleagues that he completely disrespects for the compassionate way they practice. It was not until he, as a patient, was treated how he initially treated his patients that he realized, compassion is such a big part of what he does on a daily basis. In the end, it is profound how he realizes that every doctor becomes a patient somewhere down the line. When he realizes that, it is no longer a boys’ game and he starts standing up for what is right, especially when he finds out his colleague, before performing surgery on a man who is now suing them, tore up a patients’ records. As for the colleague who he continually disrespected, he later became the surgeon that Dr. MacKee needed the most. Long wait times to see a physician in a doctor’s office is a problem that seems to be increasing and lowering patient satisfaction as a result. ...even with the very best of treatment - will identify with this film. "The Doctor" tells the story of an aloof, self-centered heart surgeon who treats his patients like names on a list. In comparison with the film to the Six Principals of Care, the characteristics of the healthcare professionals lack the importance of these six principals which is dignity, independence, safety, communication, infection control, and privacy. Here are some examples that I gathered from the film that should have been handled a better way. A client is waiting to see the doctor for a routine check-up. As the doctor walked in to the examining room, he said hello, avoids eye contact with the client, and immediately took off the client’s gown without communicating the procedure to her. He continued to examine her numbingly and then said “You’re ok”. The client was speechless, and she accepted the doctor’s un-quality of care. There were two principals that the doctor did not provide to the client during her examination; which is dignity and communication. When the doctor walked in the examining room, he must communicate the procedure by explaining that he will be removing her gown, and there will be some therapeutic therapy of her body. By communicating this information with the client, she will feel safe, secure, and unviolated because the doctor is informing or asking for her consent.
