Discriminatory Wage Gap
“The gap between the median wage for a man and that of a woman in 2010 was $10,784.00 per year. The gender wage gap gets larger with age and builds up over time. But for women in the final five years of their careers before retirement, the wage gap grows to a whopping $14,352.00. Over a 40-year career, the average woman will lose $431,000.00 to the gender wage gap” (Cooper 1). Does this seem fair? It seems quite obvious to the common observer that there should be equal pay across the board for the same job accomplished regardless of gender, education or any other factor one might dream up. Nevertheless, according to most research and authorities on the subject of equal pay, there is a gap between the earnings of men and women. Moreover, as one delves into the subject more thoroughly, one notes it is much more complicated than simply equal pay for the same work performed. Women are greatly affected by the wage gap over time where they lose a significant amount of money the closer they are to retirement. As of April, 2014, the Center for American Progress states that to every dollar a man makes, a woman makes 77 cents (Cooper 1). Thus, it is apparent that women are still behind the men in terms of equal pay in the workforce. While women's pay in the workforce has traditionally been less than a man’s it nevertheless has increased over the years; however, as of 2014 there still exists a pay gap which can only be addressed through legislation, enforcement of that legislation and awareness by all that inequality is unacceptable.

Global assessment in 2010-111 Daniel Vaughan-Whitehead 2 SUMMARY Worrying global wage trends around the world as well as poor wage practices along the supply chain – both exacerbated by the economic crisis – have led to increasing concerns over wage issues. This paper is aimed at identifying how ‘fair’ would be wage practices along the supply chain. For this we first propose to define ‘Fair wages’ through a new approach, the ‘Fair wage approach’, aimed at providing CSR actors with a coherent set of fair wage dimensions and indicators. This new approach is then applied in a large-scale exercise carried out on wages in more than 100 suppliers in Asia and complemented by three case studies in China. This exercise carried out in 2010-11 provides first hand and most recent information on wage practices among suppliers. The results identify a number of wage problems along the supply chain, and also confirm the need to address wage issues using a broad spectrum of different ‘fair wage’ dimensions, including living wages, minimum wages, prevailing wages, social dialogue, the payment of working hours and the evolution of wages in accordance with prices, enterprise performance and changes in technology and human capital. The professions that interest me are Engineering, Chemistry, and Anesthesiology. According to a data study provided by the American Chemical Society (ACS) male chemists earned thirty percent more than female chemists. The findings of their research showed that eighty-three percent of the wage gap is due to differences in work ethic, and productivity, while the remaining seventeen percent is because of discrimination, and other unmeasured allegations. The information that I obtained from the National Society of Professional Engineers, in 2004 there were approximately 192,900 female engineers (62,000 were software engineers) throughout the United States, compared to the overwhelming number of men in this profession, at over 1,515,000. Women are more likely to get hired in the environmental, and chemical engineering fields than men are. However, women are less likely to get hired in the mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering professions than men. Since the passing of the equal pay act, the median weekly earnings of women is still just seventy eight cents on each dollar that men earn (Center for American Progress, 2010). The recent recession in the United States has intensified the subject seeing the top one percent of incomes in the country rise 20% in 2012 as opposed to some other lower-class incomes falling as much as 18% throughout that same timeframe. One characteristic is workaholic, paragraph 1, for example, she says “He worked himself to death”, and this shows how Phil’s priority was his job and only his job that his job sent him to the grave. Another reference she makes is on paragraph 15 “so he finally worked himself to death, at precisely 3:00 A.M., Sunday morning, no one was really surprised”. The reference shows how everyone around Phil’s life knew his job was the most important thing to him that they suspected it was going to end up killing him. It’s disturbing to know how many professionals in the work place right now are going through it, overworking so much they don’t have a chance to rest, until the only chance to rest is when they are dead. Goodman also characterizes Phil’s physical form as overweight. On paragraph 4, for example, she says “He was of course overweight, by 20 or 25 pounds” and on paragraph 14 “You could have picked him out in a minute from a line up”. In addition to information on annual income, this study also looks at hourly wage data, which is a more precise measure as the earnings data series takes into account the price of labour as well as quantity (i.e. individuals’ work/leisure preferences). This study looks at the variables of race, highest achieved level of education as well as age to examine the existence of a wage gap. Like other studies, we have found that males have a higher wage in each of these areas, with females earning an average of 80 – 87% of the males’ average. Furthermore, we have examined the existence and size of a wage gap in three industries; law, nursing and the education industry. Finally, we looked at the Canadian gender-based wage gap statistics compared to International gender-based wage gap statistics. We deduced that there is, indeed, a wage gap in each of the mentioned industries, and can be partially attributed to human capital theory and occupational segmentation theory, however, a substantial portion of the gap remains unexplained. 2.
