Data Mining for Predictive Analytics

...Data Mining for Predictive Analytics Stanley Kenton Marks December 11th, 2012 Abstract Simply collecting data for research is nearly a faux pas in today’s competitive web-market. Analysts are now looking toward the predictive analytics of association discovery in web and data mining, to find Business Intelligence of clustering sub=populations while eliminating errors to keep collected data valid. In the midst this data crunch are fears of lost privacy. Do not fear. Creative innovations are bringing mash-ups to our diversity. Data Analytics Report Useful information, knowledge and finding some unexpected results can “strike it rich” with added creative thinking. Data mining supplies analysts, investors, and traders with customers buying patterns, historical trading rules, even fraudulent behavior for insurance claims. Predictive analytics is used in web mining by analyzing user’s movements from one web content to another. Collecting the data of where a user browses and the content they are seeking can become knowledge if the analyst understands the patterns (Turban & Volonino, 2011). An Association Discovery Algorithm is a tool of data mining where new rules are discovered such that if one item is present then another will also be found. This type of knowledge benefits analyst’s predictability of future probabilities and is very useful to the marketing department, (Ranjan, 2008). A traditional example......

It looks at historical cases and builds models which can then be applied to benefit present scenarios or predict future scenarios. Predictive Analytics is the best way for a business to predict customer responses in the future. It provides solutions for businesses facing main problems like ‘What segment of potential consumers will respond best to our message’ and ‘how can I stop my customers from leaving, and why am I losing them?’(Curtis, 2010). Predictive analytics is not just for providing a solution for a business problem but involves techniques mainly to improve the focus of company towards customers and customers towards company. The magnificence of predictive analytics is that a business characteristically perceives a win-win situation. In other words, a business not only benefits from higher returns but also gets to save on cost (Colin, 2009). Predictive analytics is becoming a competitive necessity and an important aspect of many types of business, particularly in this type of economy where an organization is trying to increase its efficiency and at the same time maintain and grow the business. ...Predictive Analytics: The Power to Predict Who Will Click, Buy, Lie, or Die is a good entry-level book into the realm of analysis based on gathered data. The terminology used is not technical. The writing is humorous, optimistic, and engaging. The content is eye-opening, insightful, terrifying, and thought-provoking – simultaneously. Being both informative and enjoyable, the writing style reminded me of Freakonomics in many ways. Graphic devices such as flow charts, cartoons, diagrams, data tables, and other illustrations made the information easier to understand. The author incorporates case studies, anecdotes, literature, quotes, theory, popular culture and other elements to enhance the entertainment value of the work. This is the world that we live in. On a daily basis, the subjective choices we make are compiled and used to forecast myriad outcomes for future decisions. While admitting the odds of predicting the behavior of an individual are less likely, the author readily asserts that data is used more effectively to anticipate the preferences of various groups of people. Through this book, I learned that predictive analytics is the intricate process of connecting scraps of information about groups of people in order to estimate the actions of group members. Although individual calculations are not often accurate, and are routinely one percent or less, a fraction can represent an advantage of......

...Introduction to Analytics Hal Hagood u01a1 The article used was found on Forbes and reports how UPS (United Parcel Service) uses predictive analytics to replace routine maintenance. It addresses a problem that UPS, one of the largest logistics operations in the world faces constantly as they deliver millions of packages every day, a feat which is a small miracle in and of itself. If even one of the trucks in their fleet has so much as even a minor breakdown, it can be a big problem with unpleasant consequences. This can result in driver downtime, late packages and angry customers. The data analytics solution used was that of predictive analytics. United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) is the world's largest package delivery company and a provider of supply chain management solutions. It is a global logistics company headquartered in Sandy Springs, Georgia, which is part of the Greater Atlanta metropolitan area. UPS delivers more than 15 million packages a day to more than 6.1 million customers in more than 220 countries and territories around the world (UPS, 2015). The challenges associated with this problem and the information that required analysis concerned maintenance of its fleet. In the past UPS used to replace important parts every few years. This was the solution they used to ensure that its vehicles stayed on the road and in good working order. The new approach however, is to collect data from hundreds of sensors in each vehicle. They then use various algorithms...

...Spotlight on Making Your Company Data-Friendly Spotlight 64 Harvard Business Review December 2013   Artwork Chad Hagen Nonsensical Infographic No. 5 2009, digital hbr.org Analytics 3.0 In the new era, big data will power consumer products and services. by Thomas H. Davenport T hose of us who have spent years studying “data smart” companies believe we’ve already lived through two eras in the use of analytics. We might call them BBD and ABD—before big data and after big data. Or, to use a naming convention matched to the topic, we might say that Analytics 1.0 was followed by Analytics 2.0. Generally speaking, 2.0 releases don’t just add some bells and whistles or make minor performance tweaks. In contrast to, say, a 1.1 version, a 2.0 product is a more substantial overhaul based on new priorities and technical possibilities. When large numbers of companies began capitalizing on vast new sources of unstructured, fast-moving information—big data—that was surely the case. Some of us now perceive another shift, fundamental and farreaching enough that we can fairly call it Analytics 3.0. Briefly, it is a new resolve to apply powerful data-gathering and analysis December 2013 Harvard Business Review 65 Spotlight on Making Your Company Data-Friendly methods not just to a company’s operations but also to its offerings—to embed data smartness into the products and services customers buy. I’ll develop this argument in what follows,......

Data Analytics

...Title: Class: Student’s Name: Professor’s Name: Date: Define data analytics Data analytics is the art of examing raw data with an aim of analyzing the information for evaluation and research. Data analytics as used in industry is to allow companies and organizations to analyze their data in order to improve their production. It focuses on inference, the process of reaching a conclusion based on the known by a researcher. (Lavalle & Kruschwitz 2013) Evolution of data analytics Some years ago when we talked about modeling and database profiling it was for the special few who had the privilege of owning a PHD in order to analyze statistical data and make meaning of it. The uses were limited and it was impossible for small businesses/enterprises to make use of the process due to the complexity of the process. That was all in the past and has changed today with a large number of Multi-Nationals adopting the idea and process of data analyzing. This is because data driven solutions have proven to provide a competitive different ion from users. For this reason data analytic solutions are cheaper to small companies and enterprises through the use of cloud networks which in turn reduces the cost of setting up and running networks from within. Due to the low cost, researchers and solution providers have the opportunity to enhance the process to their customers. A good example is the transformation of EBay and Amazon; when Krishnan was thinking of a larger data book,......
