The first major core problem with the company is people are not willing to speak up when they know something is wrong. They are willing to turn a blind eye to the wrong doing due to a few reasons, they feared retaliation, they wanted to win a contract, they just didn’t want to cause trouble or there was no proper system in place in order to bring these issues to light. By people not voicing the wrong doing by one of these reasons it ultimately caused others in the company to continue or to begin unethical behaviour. Another problem with the company is that executives had allowed bureaucracy to consume them and they learned to hide in it. This ultimately created a non flexible and flawed system. One of the results that occurred from this flawed system was when Boeings former chief financial officer was caught holding illegal job negotiations with a senior pentagon official, furthermore a manager was stealing 25000 pages of proprietary documents from his former employer. If that was not bad enough the shocking truth that women were paid less than men also surfaced. Did Boeing get it right with the Dreamliner? [pic] In Boeing’s cavernous plant here, temporary scaffolding rises alongside several of the first 787 Dreamliners ever to be built. Workers climb steel steps to slip everything from wiring to hydraulic systems into some of the planes. In other bays, crews operate giant tools that help shape parts of wings being built for older-model 747s, 767s and 777s. Staccato blasts ring out from air-powered rivet guns. Cranes hoist finished wings and fuselage sections onto the assembly floor. The scene is one of disciplined industry on a gigantic scale. But the fact remains that the scaffolding for the Dreamliners should never have been needed. The wings and major sections of the fuselage were supposed to arrive fully fitted from outside suppliers and simply be snapped together. But the suppliers were at first too overwhelmed to install all the systems. Boeing says that they have since come up to speed, and that it should be able to wheel away the scaffolding soon. The reverberating effects of Boeing’s outsourcing missteps have taken a huge toll. In hindsight Boeing should have reduced airfare and focused more on innovation landing them a head of their competitors. Instead it cost them billions, put them three years behind schedule and allowed Airbus to succeed. Seeing their mistakes, Boeing turned it around by creating an aircraft that would add value to the consumer and generate profits for the company. Boeing took the opportunity to research composite materials to improve passenger cabin comforts and an overall flying experience compared to the aluminium they had been using previously. Then Boeing wanted to add value to the consumer. Using the new composite materials and upgrading the electrical system to lithium-ion batteries fuel surcharges were reduced and Boeing was able to pass along the savings to the consumers. The increased durability of the aircraft also led to reduced maintenance costs therefore reducing the replacements necessary and in turn having cost saving effects for Boeing and the consumer. Consumers were happy and stock prices increased. Although things appeared to be going wonderfully, there was a huge concern with overheating batteries and it needed to be rectified as soon as possible.
