Demonstrative Communication

Communication could best be explained as the passing of information, ideas or messages between senders and receivers. While seemingly a straight-forward process on paper, the skill to communicating effectively is complicated due to multiple messages which are conveyed in methods other than the spoken word. The reality of communication is people convey messages with everything from eye contact and body movement to facial expressions and vocal tone when communicating. In fact, according to Mehrabian (1981), over 90 percent of communication is passed through nonverbal methods. Thus, making the talent to correctly read and interpret non-verbal communication crucial to both the sender and receiver since this skill can literally be the difference between success and failure of communication.
With multiple communication levels, normally occurring simultaneously and almost instantaneously, the sender and receiver both must pay close attention not only what is said, but also how it is said and other non-verbal cues to ensure a clear understanding of the messages that are meant to be conveyed. Besides focused attention on eye contact, body movement and vocal tone, other forms of nonverbal communication include facial expression, gestures, touch and space (“Nonverbal,” 2012). A lack of attention or misinterpretation of any of these non-verbal cues could cause a communication breakdown due to ineffective or negative message delivery or receiving, either intentional or unintentional. For example, let’s look at how unintentional body movement and gestures can demonstrate how communication efforts can be negative for both receiver and sender. Communication is a way to transmit feelings or thoughts; it is a process of transferring information between a sender and a receiver. It involves replacing ideas, messages or information given. Verbal communication however is straight to the point because when one is speaking you can hear the sincerity or the sarcastic implies within their voice. By using hand gestures during a lecture, we can keep the attention of our audience. However, if we move too much it becomes a distracter and received as a negative effect, thus causing our audience to become distracted and not receive our message. Using a drone monotone voice has a negative impact as there is the chance of quickly losing the attention of the group he is addressing, it will put your class at ease, and they will not get the full effect of the course. Messages are conveyed through appearance, gestures, and attitudes. Nonverbal communication is unavoidable. People communicate nonverbally before they can utter a single word. Words contribute surprisingly little to communication; about 2/3 of communication is nonverbal (Cheesebro, O’Connor, & Rios, 2010). The messages encoded in a person’s facial expressions, posture, and attire send a message about that person. Unwritten communication can contain several dimensions of nonverbal messages. The speed with which a person speaks can convey the importance of message. A person will speak rapidly when the message is urgent. Conversely, if the purpose of the communication is to inform or entertain, the tempo will be slower. Every action, whether deliberate or involuntary, is part of the nonverbal communication that people receive with a spoken message. Effective communication is when information is transmitted by the sender is received and understood by someone in the way it was intended.
