Module 5: Assessing Your Learning

Throughout the course of almost any day of my life currently, I'm primarily found listening to music. After taking a full day to record these results through the suggestion of a Listening Journal, it became very apparent what I spend each hour of the day listening to. As previously stated, music. As my husband and I are on opposite work schedules, we are like passing ships in the night during the night. The house is quiet when I wake up and quiet when I leave to go to work. The time that I am home, however, I like to fill the house with some form of noise....to block out the road and neighborhood noise. Seems silly to want to distract myself from one noise and replace it with another, but I do! While the music is playing, I try to complete as much schoolwork as possible. The effectiveness of my listening varied from song to song. Since I stream music online through the use of Pandora or the likes, it chooses random music based on your likes and dislikes. Whenever a song was on that I did not care for, I would either zone out of listening to that and really focus on my work in front of me until the next song came on, or I would stop what I was doing completely, and switch my focus 100% on skipping foward onto the next song. Next, I continued foward to further disect my listening style. To better understand this, I had to compare my results with real human interaction, not an online music station! After completing the textbook evaluation, It heavily pointed towards my hunch that I am both a Critical and Task-Oriented Listener. I am good at quickly evaluating the information that I hear while listening for the underlying bottom line. As well, depending on the situation, I listen to figure out what exactly it is that is needed to be done to complete a task. I like it quick and straight to the point! As for my apprehension when…...

Describe Your Learning Style

...Running head: How Do I Learn Best How Do I Learn Best Kelli Powell Grand Canyon University: NRS 429V September 30, 2012 What is a learning style? Well a learning style is the way a person tends to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (2012). Some people prefer to learn by doing and touching, others prefer to learn by seeing, or by hearing the information. Still others learn using more than one learning style. If a person was interested in finding out what their particular learning style is would be to take the VARK questionnaire for learning styles. The most common learning style is the multimodal, but the learner can switch from one type of learning style to another depending on what the subject is being learned and or their mood, Fleming (2011). After taking the VARK questionnaire, Multimodal learning styles was assessed as the learning style of choice. The multimodal learning environments allow instructional elements to be presented in more than one sensory mode (visual, aural, written, and kinesthetic), Sankey, Birch & Gardiner (2010). In this particular case visual and kinesthetic were the dominate methods of learning. Strategies of learning that this person uses are highlighting and underlining notes, grouping subjects together with a certain color highlighter, use of charts, graphs and images to help them learn the subject matter.......

Assessing Your Own Leadership

...Assessing your own leadership, capability and performance Level 5. By Sue Rogers 15/05/12 Understand Leadership styles Contemporary leadership as defined by Gareth Jones and Jennifer George is “the process by which an individual exerts influence over other people and inspires, motivates, and directs their activities to help achieve group or organisational goals.” As I consider myself to be a contemporary leader, who has recently been allocated the task of being part of a leadership team which will lead a new and hopefully innovative health and social care service forward in Cornwall; I believe it is an essential part of this role to ensure I understand exactly what effective leadership is and how I will need to use the right skills at the right time. In addition the new service implementation is taking place within a background of a much wider cultural change from the relative safety of the NHS into what is essentially the private sector. Working within a community health service which has recently become a community interest company staff were naturally concerned about what this might mean for both themselves and for the patients we all provide care for. In order to achieve this major change senior management endeavoured to engage staff in the decision making process by holding interactive information sessions, using computerised updates asking for feedback and questionnaires. The leadership styles employed to achieve this attempted to be transformational (Burn,......

A Framework for Assessing Learning Outcomes in Online Business Simulations

...A Framework for Assessing Learning Outcomes in Online Business Simulations Like the last entry, this entry is also derived from a paper I wrote for my master's work in the Technology, Innovation, and Education program at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. My advisor on this project was noted knowledge networks researcher Barry Fishman, visiting Harvard from the University of Michigan. Harvard Business School Publishing is about to launch the first two products in our new series of online business simulations and I wanted to investigate how we can ensure that this product line produces effective learning for our customers. This paper explores a framework for assessing effectiveness in online business simulations. Introduction Problem Statement and Paper Structure Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP) has created a new product line of online business simulations. We know from faculty customer surveys that they are highly concerned themselves with how easy the simulations are to use, administer, and debrief, and that they are equally concerned that their demanding, and increasingly technically-literate, students rate the learning experience as engaging and dynamic. Hence these eLearning products are designed to be engaging, interactive, usable and teachable. We also know from faculty surveys that these types of learning tools are considered to be very effective. But what does the literature say about these kinds of claims? How can HBS Publishing know...

Assessing Your Own Leadership Capability and Performance

...Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management skills Task: Assessing your own leadership capability and performance There are so many definitions of leadership and it is difficult to establish a specific definition; The Oxford English Dictionary definition of leadership is: "The action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this." Drucker’s summed up leadership as “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers” whereas, John C Maxwell said “leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less”. Warren Bennis focuses more on individual capability and defines leadership as "Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential." Compare these to allegedly one of the greatest leaders of all time where it is written that this leader had the ability to influence the behaviour of other people toward group goals in a way that fully respected their freedom. The emphasis on freedom was important to this leader who influenced many but he didn’t compel anyone to follow him, albeit he had many followers. This of course could not work in the world of business as we must in my opinion have people who can lead effectively supported by followers, because without followers there cannot be leaders. Review the prevailing leadership styles in the organisation (based upon leadership......

Learning to Flex Your Communication Style

...Learning to Flex Your Communication Style Communication styles are part of the foundation of building effective relationships. In order to build future positive relationships, we must learn to flex our styles. Robert and Dorothy Bolton (1996), co-authors of Peoples Styles at Work, state, “Strong relationships are built by being consistently honest, fair, and respectful of others” (p. 117). The combination of style flex, honesty, fairness and respect helps to achieve the goal of effective communication, which leads to better personal and professional relationships. As an amiable style communicator, I find it easier to relate to others. My style reflects my personality as being positive, helpful and warm. More than often, I tend to ask the question “why” to be able to understand my audience’s needs. Being emphatic and sensitive to the needs of others leads to pleasant relationships. I like being part of a team, assisting others with assignments and working in small groups. This allows me to build relationships that are more personal not just those of association. When meeting the needs of others, I often have to flex my communication style. As easy as it is to want to remain the soft spoken, well-liked, and respected person, sometimes this can have a negative on affect relationships. I have to become more aggressive and direct at various meetings and high alert situations. Style flexing helps me to achieve effective communication. When working...

Assessing Your Own Leadership Capabilities and Performance

...Assessing your own leadership capabilities and performance Understanding leadership styles within an organization A leadership style is a way of providing direction, implementing plans and motivating people. Every company applies its own leadership styles, choosing to adopt those which best suit their particular needs. no one style of leadership fits all situations, so it's useful to understand different leadership frameworks and leadership styles and adapt your approach to fit your situation. Looking through leadership theory, we find that different books and studies opt to split leadership differently. However for this assignment we will be using the Situational leadership theory, developed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard in the 1960’s. The model rests on two fundamental concepts; the Leadership Style and the individual or group Maturity Level. Hersey and Blanchard categorized all leadership styles into four behaviour types, which they named S1 to S4: S1.Directing This is where leaders make all of the decisions within the company, then give specific instructions to their (followers) expecting them to follow, all whilst supervising closely the work which is being carried out. S2.Coaching The Coaching style of leadership clearly defines the roles of each follower while still seeking input and suggestions from them. Final decisions are still made by the leader but communication is two way. S3.Supporting The......

Assessing Your Leadership Style

...Assessing Your Leadership Style to Achieve Organizational Objectives EILEEN NEWMAN RUBIN Research has shown that there are more than 30 differently named leadership styles, ranging from micro-management to hands-off, each with its own proponents. Six, however, stand out as most com- monly found in business: authoritarian, democratic, transformational, laissez-faire, servant, and situa- tional. A review of the experiences of six leaders who embody these styles reveals that each mode of operating has its pros and cons; there is no sin- gle best approach. Being aware of one’s leadership style and that of others makes it possible to lever- age strengths and compensate for weaknesses and to properly match individuals to a particular role or task—for the good of the entire organization. ©C 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Whether they are involved in politics, corporate America, or a nonprofit endeavor, the style in which managers and other professionals exert their lead- ership can determine the outcome of their efforts. As the American businessman and political fig- ure Erskine Bowles said, “Leadership is the key to 99 percent of all successful efforts” (Kruse, 2012). But what is the best leadership style to use? There is no simple answer to this seemingly simple ques- tion. One’s leadership style depends on several fac- tors, including the personality of the leader, the or- ganizational culture (and the many subcultures that may exist within it), the personalities of the people...

Therefore, it is firmly agreed that learning history is dominant as it enhance the spirit of nationalism and knowledge of people in that country. History is essential to be learned because it makes citizens respect their nationality. Learning history shows how the ancestors struggled to protect the country. For instance, in the time of the fifth king of Thailand, England and France had been threatening Malaya island such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippine. The King negotiated with England and France that Thailand would be buffer state between England and France. However, Thailand still lost many things to them such as Samui Island and three million baht which was too much at that time. therefore, the citizens who learn that story shall feel respect to their nationality. Learning history is important to make one to be knowledgeable while protecting and improving oneselves. To identify, learning about economic crisis which happened in the past can protect one from mistakes which may happen again. In addition, learning history can improve the ability to learn how the ancestors saved their companies from being bankrupt and adjust that method appropriate with the present time. Essay 4-1 Your Learning Style.Docx

...What Is Your Learning Style? What is a learning style? A learning style is the way an individuals learns. To understand a learning style, consider tasks you have learned to do well, and then consider other tasks that tend to be difficult for you. Everyone has a variety of learning styles, which is their unique approach to learning. To find out what learning styles you possess, take the “Learning-Style Questionnaire.” When I took the questionnaire, it identified different aspects of my learning styles, how I approached the processing and taking in of information and gave me a better insight into myself overall. The majority of the results from the questionnaire were refreshingly accurate. I related to the results not only in a classroom environment, but also as a lifestyle barometer following me throughout my daily interactions. The portions of the questionnaire that did not accurately describe me were based on different settings interacting with completely different mediums and under different circumstances. I agree with the spatial learner aspect of the results. I experience it first hand when I feel the need to buy construction paper, scissors, glue and markers to create tangible objects driving home the workings of networking devices. Or, I realize my propensity as a visual learner, when I go to the video library or attend workshops on the step by step process of how to create culinary dishes. In part five of the questionnaire, I disagree with my low creative......

Assessing and Planning

...Introduction Assessing and planning are two big components of the supervisory process. They can be done through clinical supervision and/or peer coaching. It depends on which model will work best for your school. Clinical supervision looks more at data whereas, peer coaching involves more around. However, they are both similar and different in many ways that will be discussed in this paper. Clinical supervision Clinical supervision has changed over the years. It started in 1969 with five steps to include preconference, observation, analyzing of data and planning for post conference, post conference with teacher, and critique of the previous four steps (Glickman, Gordon, and Ross-Gordon, 2014). Over the years, twelve principles were added. They are classroom based, purpose for instruction and teacher’s long term development, separate from summative evaluation, understanding of child development, education, and teacher improvement, supervisor needs to have relational and problem solving skills, open-minded, reciprocated trust, collegial affiliation, data-based, gathers data based on the teacher’s lesson to be observed, has reflective conversation with teacher and supervisor, and is recurring ((Glickman, Gordon, and Ross-Gordon, 2014). It involves a teacher receiving feedback from a colleague that observed the teacher but wears many hats like a sounding board to enables the teacher to examine and alters their own professional practice (Pajak, 2003). Strengths and......
