Acid rain is a widespread problem found all over the world. The damaging effects of acid rain are one of the largest contributors to this form of pollution. Acid rain is any precipitation; rain, snow, or fog that contains acids such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Our society is becoming overwhelmed with great amounts of pollution from cars, factories, and garbage. The tremendous amounts of sulfur dioxide emitted into the air causes high levels of acid in the atmosphere. “Sulfur dioxide is one of the primary components of "acid rain" and it helps keep sunlight out of the atmosphere, which causes the Earth to cool” (Sulfur, 2013). Sulfur dioxide emission contributes to global warming. The acidity of a substances dissolved in water is commonly measured in terms of pH. When this sulphuric acid is absorbed into moisture in the air, poignant rainfalls can be damaging to the external environment. Natural sources, which emit sulfur dioxide, are volcanoes, sea spray, rotting vegetation and plankton. Acid rain is destroying the world’s lakes, air and ecosystem. Acid rain affects every single aspect of the ecosystem. Acid rain is devastating to aquatic life, crops and forests, and human life. People exposed to sulfur dioxide in the air often have reduced lung function. The growth of forestlands also shows the effects of acid rain. Acidic rain damages trees (Godbold & Huttermann, 1994). Many trees show the disease slowly, but when disease and virus attacks they succumb to the disease because of their weak conditions. Young plants with developing root systems are readily damaged by acidic rainfall when pollutants enter the soil and are absorbed by the plants (Which, 2012). ...Acid precipitation “Acid precipitation is very noxious to the environment and to the living organisms.” Anywhere you can find this statement but the question is “What people should do to avoid its origination?” For most scientists it had been an immense issue last few years. Its origination is always linked with human activities such as industrial activities. Rather than thinking of abolishing industrial activities, we should try to reduce them. In the first place “What is acid precipitation?” Acid rain is a result of air pollution which is caused by noxious chemicals. It is not just caused by steam which escapes through exhaust pipes of cars; it is caused by millions of invisible particles of gases that come from power stations and factories. Some of these tiny particles (nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide) react with natural water droplets in clouds and form sulphuric and nitric acids. The rain falls to the ground and it is known as acid rain. The reason it is called acidic is that it has a Ph level of less than 7. Relative acidity or alkalinity of a substance is measured in ph scale which has numbers from 0-14. If a substance has a ph level of 0-7 it is known as acidic and if it has a ph level of 7-14 it is known as a basic substance. It is a problem in the world since it effects natural and man-made environments as well as other factors in negative ways. The unpolluted water that rains down on us is always slightly acidic with a pH of around 5.6. This is because the rainwater from the clouds react with the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) that is in the air.
