A BLACK WOMAN’S JOURNEY: FOR COLORED GIRLS

Created in 1975, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf, focuses on the struggles of black women not only from that era, but issues still pertaining to black women 35 years later. Shange’s powerful choreopoem is comprised of seven women trying to "sing a black girl's song…. Sing a song of life, she's been dead so long"(Shange 18), creating a voice for every woman. None of these women possess a name, only a color, to show that they represent all women of color. Shange includes themes of love, abandonment, sexuality, abortion, and domestic violence to emphasize what women in her community were and still are subjugated to. Through dance, poetry, and music these women slowly but surely find their true identity. Ntozake uses her work as a tool to empower all “colored girls” by creating these seven strong women that form a bond when they are able to find their identity as black women, and essentially in their journey make it to the end of their rainbows without committing suicide. When looking into Shange’s life there’s no question that situations, which she had observed day-to-day or experienced herself, were imposed on her writings. Born as Paulette Williams she was raised in a middle class family, which was not a childhood common for blacks. Her family moved to St. Louis and she attended a non-segregated school where she had to endure blatant racism at the mere age of eight years old. She rebelled against her family’s satisfaction with being a part of the middle class when she still had to deal with the hardships of being black and a woman. ...For Colored Girls Play Analysis For Colored Girls is a play written by Ntozake Shange at the peak of the black feminist movement, in 1975. It is a collection of poems that tell the story of seven women of color and how their lives interconnect. The play deal with deep subject matter such as rape, abortions, domestic abuse, and faith, as is delves into the lives of these women. The play ends as all of the women come together with an empowering scene about the strength in womanhood. How do struggles, specifically ones imposed on women such as rape and domestic abuse, create strength and empowerment that would have never been attained without enduring such life experiences? In For Colored Girls, all of the women find strength in each other and faith in order to overcome their individual struggles and find strength to continue on with life. They become stronger individuals that they once were and that strong power that they now posses is from believe in themselves and their ability to persevere. ...The Symbolism of the Journey ENG 125 Introduction to Literature According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” The journey is a central focus of Robert Frost’s “The Path Not Taken” and Jean Rhys’s “I Used to Live Here Once,” although the destination is also an important part of the latter. While both stories have similar themes, they have different points of view; both show that life can change during the journey. In addition, both stories illustrate that things aren’t always as they seem. This paper will compare and contrast the two stories and how despite the different viewpoints, there is one thing in common; regardless of the journey a person takes, there are many obstacles and hurdles. Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” has been often interpreted with different meanings but is one of the most quoted poems of all time. Many interpretations of the poem believe it encourages individualism and self-reliance. There are others that believe it is not what the author intended. Upon closer examination we can determine that Frost’s intended message is that life choices are inevitable, a natural part of the life process, and that we cannot know whether the decision was the right one until we are in the future looking back at that particular moment in time, nor can we ever know what choosing the other path would have meant for our future. She is kneeling over a small creature on what seems to be a deserted road. As she begins to weep uncontrollably until her little body is shaking as if she were standing on a fault line during an earthquake. If you look over her tiny shoulder a small white dog lies upon a gravel road. The dog’s eyes seem to be squinting yet all of the dust from the dirt road is almost completely covering its tiny, furry, body. But what is wrong with the dog? Is it dead or only merely injured? How did it get there and can it be saved? These questions that are shaped in the readers mind is indicative of a short story that uses not only imagery but symbols to tell a story. The picture you have formed in your head of the small, sad little girl and her beloved dog is an example of symbolism of the journey. ...For Colored Girls In this film, I believe I will be reviewing a movie that will provide motivation and encouragement to all women of color, not only for African American women, but other cultures as well. Because this is a Tyler Perry film, I also expect it to be very humorous. The film classification of this movie is fiction. The physical qualities of this film are music, live action, narration, color, background noise, and dramatization. The tone of this film is serious yet joyful. I chose serious because each experience the women went through was very sad and realistic. They were not funny, and were eye openers to me. I chose joyful because in the ending, every woman received her joy back. They were able to face their obstacles and make a decision to move past them. This film most certainly conveys its message effectively. As a tool of communication, the strengths were the various ways the writer made you feel as if you were actually in the film, each scene was very realistic. The weakness that I found in this film was the scene when both of the women, Tangie and Alice, were saying their poems at the same time. I was unable to understand either of the poems thoroughly. While the decision of a woman’s choice regarding an unwanted pregnancy that occurred by accident is debated. Many take a more mild approach on abortions because of rape and incest. This can cause huge emotional damage to a woman who has already been mentally and physically injured. I would argue that an unwanted child would be subjected to an unhappy childhood, which could have even greater consequences in the long run. According to PRCH and Guttmacher (2005), many religions have found ways to justify abortions as permissible. In the Jewish faith, the termination of a pregnancy is not seen as wrong, as long as it is performed to protect the mother’s well being, whether it is physical or emotional health. Charlotte Perkins Gilman shows us the ideals towards women, held by society in the late 1800’s. Her story, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, written in the first person point of view, takes us on a journey through the mind of the narrator. The narrator secretly writes in a diary and as we read through her diary entries, we are able to see that during this time in history, women were seen as weak, meek and humble. They were expected to be subservient to men and unequal to their male counterparts in all aspects. Men are seen as being superior to women and godlike. It was like the television show A Different World. While my reason for routinely making the two hour trip from my college was to convince a particular one of these women that she was to be my wife, it became clear that a unique dynamic was on the horizon. Many of the educated Black women I encountered had confidence in their academic and professional journey, but lacked clarity on whether enough educated Black men with at least an ounce of swagger shared their dream of creating a formidable family. It was a fair question then, and remains a growing dilemma affecting educated Black women today. Since that time I have consistently spoken with Brothers, Sisters, family members, friends, and others about the challenges facing Black relationships. Nadine Gordimer is the author of the short story “ Country Lovers”. She strongly opposed apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid is a dominant theme in all of her writings (Chugston, 2014). She found her themes in the injustices and cruelties of her country’s policies of racial division, and she left no quarter of South African society unexplored, from the hot, crowded cinder-block neighborhoods and tiny shebeens of the black townships to the poolside barbecues, hunting parties and sun downer cocktails of the white society (Verongos, 2014). The white people had the upper hand, because they had a way stronger financial background, which enabled them to employ black people to work for them. The black people were therefore undermined, and they worked as slaves. This problem is processed in the short story “The Journey to the Brothers’ Farm”, in which we are introduced to a girl named Annelie. In many cultures, women have destined roles to fulfill and repercussions to bear if she cannot achieve being that ideal woman. The short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, consists of an extremely long, single sentence of advice a mother imposes on her young daughter. Believing her daughter is already at risk of an adolescent’s promiscuity, she cautions and reprimands her daughter in order for her to grow up with the appropriate reputation that is expected of her as a woman. With examples of dos and don’ts her mother professes, the mother sends a clear message of what the young girl’s domestic knowledge should encompass. Even though the young girl has not yet reached adolescence, her mother is deeply concerned with her negative behavior and the reputation that she might bring upon herself. ​Being from the island of Antigua and from a poor, small community, it seems as though a woman’s respectability is greatly determined by her reputation.
